My Interest In Superior Connections
While I have never swam in or boated on Lake Superior I know another Great Lake very well. Lake Michigan is only two block away from my house, I have swam in it and I have boated on it. My interest in Superior Connections stems from a few things. One interest is importance of Lake Superior to past, present, and future people living around Superior. Beside the obvious fact that the surrounding counties in the watershed, what are the other benefits or detriments that the lake impact the surrounding area? Another reason I am interested in Superior Connections is integrated class structures for the program. Learning an idea in one class then transitioning to a whole new idea in another class is boring. I have had small experiences once with this

The need for water causes the lakes water level to fluctuate throughout the year, causing numerous impacts on the fish and wildlife populations. The fish are mainly impacted because of the strain on spawning that changing water levels can cause (Coops et al 2003). However, the management of fish have caused a decrease in the Kokanee Salmon population, and thus the Lake Trout population as well. Large numbers of anglers frequent this lake because of the Kokanee Salmon and Lake Trout. This body of water was known for its impressive fishing for these two species of fish, but that is now threatened due to a decreasing salmon…

Michigan is a natural resource because of water and is part of a large, renewable water cycle. Michigan is full of rivers and lakes, but it is most importantly known for its great lakes, making Michigan the “Mitten State.” That being said, it is no surprise that water has a large effect on the state, shaping the land with the erosion and deposition that occurs with lakes and rivers, to the glacial movement a million years ago. How has water shaped the mitten shape of Michigan not only today, but also during the glaciers of the Ice Age?…

The trip to Pine Lake Challenge Course did not change me. One of the things I did learn though, is that to get a job done with a group of people, some of them will just slow me down. As a class, this field trip will show who’s mature, who’s not mature, and how we react working with others. One of the other things I realized is what kind of person I want to be when I grow older. I want to be a kind of person that will get along with others and be successful in…

When thinking of Michigan, one might think of pristine blue water in the form of lakes, rivers and streams. Michigan boasts not only bordering four of the five great lakes but it also contains more than 11,000 inland lakes and more than 12,000 miles of rivers and streams (Michigan). Throughout history, water has played a key role in not only the settlements and economies of civilizations in Michigan, but it has also physically shaped the state in more ways than most people realize. The water cycle contains all of the water that exists in, on, or above the earth. It is constantly moving and has been for billions of years. The earth used to be a large sphere made of magma, the water that was inside of the…

The water glistened off the sun like a polished pearl. After strolling up to the shore, she gazed at the astounding view. She hopped into ice-cold liquid, and felt a chill crawl up her back. “How does it feel,” yelled a far off voice. “It feels great… jump right in,” she lied. She thought about how Lake Holcombe allows people to be themselves, spend time with family, and become stronger mentally and physically.…

I love Buckeye Lake. It is where I live, where I raised my family, the home of my business, and it is the only place I want to live. Unfortunately, Buckeye Lake is going through a trying time. The low water level, construction, and lack of communication, impacts us all. My feelings during this past (lake-less) year have finally settled down to a point where I can express my thoughts on a personal level regarding the lake situation.…

Several scenes in Grendel reflect real world situations. In some scenarios, Grendel interactions with other characters are no different than that of us with friends or family members. This is most easily seen in chapter seven when Grendel stumbles upon a dragon guarding a large pile of gold and gems. The dragon proceeds to give Grendel advice and discuss the habits of, not only Grendel himself, but also the humans. The dragon very clearly views himself as wiser and superior to humans and Grendel. Let’s face it, we all have that one classmate who thinks he knows absolutely everything and is not afraid to let us inferior students know about it. The dragon reminds me of a know-it-all student, or maybe even an older sibling- someone who has been praised for knowing so much that they assume they know everything.…

A major concern is raised in the cities surrounding Lake Huron, where the pollution in the water is eutrophic effecting the environment and health of many. The sources of this pollution are many, and the culprits as equally diverse. With over 20% of the world’s freshwater supply residing in them, the North American Great Lakes are the world’s largest freshwater system (TEACH). Including Lake Erie, Michigan, Huron, Superior, and Ontario, the five lakes are an important source of fresh water and are home to many species of wildlife. However, with the belief that water could dilute any substance, the lakes also became a destination of dumping grounds for many different types of pollutants. Nonpoint-source pollution is another term for polluted runoff; Point-source pollution and Air pollution are a factor as well. Whether it is from precipitation, water washing over the land, car washing or watering crops or lawns, it picks up an array of contaminants including oil, sand and salt from roadways, agricultural chemicals, as well as nutrients and toxic chemicals from both rural and urban areas. Those are a few major contributing factors to the pollution taking place in the water caused by our everyday personal actions and local land use policies. Determining the causes and effects of water pollution in Lake Huron may facilitate new ideas and solutions for cleaning up our waterways’ and improving public health.…

Many things change the surface of the earth, and one of those things is water. The course of rivers and creation of lakes can be attributed to receding glaciers, and rivers have made changes to landscapes from steep mountains to flat floodplains. As well as humans creating many changes in the flow and direction of rivers and creation and draining of lakes. Some changes happen very rapidly, such as building a dam and creating a lake within a short period of time. Some changes happen over thousands of years, such as glacial movement. Michigan is a unique place in the world, surrounded by glacially carved lakes and dotted all over with lakes, rivers, and bogs. All of these forces have changed the surface…

Since they started pouring the concrete for the dam Lake Powell has been a center of controversy. From nature preservationists to ancient ruins advocates the subject has been heated and intense. On the other hand, those who support Lake Powell are just as avid and active in their defense of the reservoir. One of the former, Edward Abbey, sets forth his plea, hoping it does not fall upon deaf ears.…

The worst words to hear when friends are fighting are “who said it” or “name names”. I was in a problematic situation a couple of weeks ago and I was asked that question and instead of naming names I lied and took the blame. The whole fight started because when I was hanging out with my two friends while waiting for my other two friends to come and meet us. My one friend said that one of the girls had a “big mouth and that you couldn’t trust her with any personal details”. When she found out she went on this long rant about how we were all fake and that we were terrible friends but that wasn’t the case she did not know all the details. She came and tried to ask me who had said it and why they said it; at this point none of us were talking to each other but we were all supposed to be best friends. So I told her that it was me because I thought it would stop all the fighting if someone finally admitted to it. I was wrong the fighting got worse and once the two guys found out that I took the blame for one of them they started talking to me but the other two girls refused to talk to me. A couple of days went by and finally the person who had actually said it felt bad for me and told the truth. Eventually everybody came around and we were all cool again but even now it is almost awkward when we are all together. I think these are the worst kind of fights that friends can…

    Real World Connection

In the chapter Church, I felt a connection with Kiowa. “Not a minister,” he said, “but I do like churches. The way it feels inside. It feels good when you just sit there, like you’re in a forest and everything’s really quiet, except there’s still this sound you can’t hear”. The way I relate to this part is the same way I feel when I go to a temple (similar to a church) I feel the same way. When I go to the temple I sit there and listen to the prayer. But when I get into the prayer, everything goes quiet. I get this really good feeling inside myself. All my fears are taken over by peace. I think that’s why Kiowa says this is “just wrong” to be inside a holly place. One thing I didn’t understand the monks cleaning the solider weapons. Was there so representative of this. I know in my temple the minister is not allowed to touch weapons. Overall, a temple or a church are both religious place, but are both peaceful places. We are supposed to feel save in a place or worship.…
