Thesis: The novel The Chosen by Chaim Potok inspired me to become a better person by demonstrating how religious barriers can be broken. In The Chosen Danny and Reuven are boys who grow up in the same neighborhood but do not talk and are not friends because they are from different Jewish Sects. After injuring Reuven in a baseball game, Danny bonds with him in the hospital and the two become friends. This is a shocker to a lot of the people in the Brooklyn community because Danny is a Hasidic Jew while Reuven is Orthodox.…
I am a 72 year-old Orthodox Jew grandmother. My name is Gila Levine, I have been married to Aviv Levine for 49 years. I have 3 married children and 12 grandchildren. My husband and I emigrated from Israel 50 years ago and immigrated to Toronto, Canada. My husband Aviv is a retired accountant and I am a retired Hebrew school teacher. My orthopraxis traditions are: Orthodox which is branch of Judaism that resists change of traditional beliefs and practices. The Hebrew Bible consists of the Law of God which was given to Moses on Mount Sinai, and therefore the Torah is divine. As an Orthodox Jew, I learned many rules that govern the practices of Judaism; keeping a given rule is not an option. No law of the Torah should be tampered with regardless of modern lifestyles, needs or changes in society. In this blog, I will be sharing with you the Jewish Passover and its importance to me and my family as Orthodox Jews.…

After I took the MCAT in June, my life became a little hectic. Besides for completing applications, my parents decided to move to Israel. I was the only child living at home, so they desperately needed my help. We had to empty the house, get rid of all the clutter, and pack the rest of it onto a container. The house needed to be sold, so while packing, we had contractors work on the house. Personally, I was moving to Brooklyn and had to find a job and a place to live. There were many challenges. For Example, the contractor painted the bathroom door, but would not take responsibility when it didn’t close. As of now, I am sleeping on my sister’s floor and trying to finalize a part-time teaching job. I have learned how to remain calm though stressful…
Religion is one of the factors that help to maintain balance in the world. There are many religions in this world. Every religion has its own beliefs and ways of following it. Religions may vary in many aspects. While some religions may have the same beliefs, some will have the exact opposite beliefs. I come from a place where even though there are many religions found I get to observe and practice only my own religion. Even if people are open about different religions, one religion being involved in another is not acceptable for my society. This is one of the reasons why I have always been curious about other religions and their ways of following and practicing it. This is why when I got a chance to go to a Jewish Synagogue as a part of a religious service…
I am a Jew! Due to that very important fact, some parts of my life were harder than it would have been if I was a Christian or Catholic. But using my faith in myself and my religion I was able to persevere myself. A good quote that describes myself is from a Kelly Clarkson song “What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, Stand a little taller, Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone”. I always think of that song whenever something bad happens that makes me question myself, my friends, or my beliefs. I believe that simple words and beliefs don’t define a person, but their actions towards others do.…

Jews gather together for a number of important holidays (sacred becoming a community). The holidays, festivals, and the Sabbath offer Jewish people a chance to set aside sacred time, (prayer and ritual). Almost the whole of Jewish history and teaching is embodied in its holidays/festivals -- in which traditions are passed from one generation to the next by means of stories, actions, symbolic food, and singing. Most festival celebrations are based on the home and family, with the events of the past being re-enacted in a way that makes them meaningful to present-day life. In my essay, I have discussed the holidays I was most interested in, which are the High Holidays (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the Days of Awe), two of the three pilgrimage festivals (Sukkot and Passover), and Hanukkah.…

Months ago rumors and conspiracies began of an upcoming war against the United States and China, alongside with North Korea and their allies. At first no one had believed this to have been true, after all, people refused to believe something as bad as that were to happen and of course, the media had tried to hide the war to prevent global panic.…
I was running as fast as I could. I didn't know where to, all I knew was that I couldn't stop. Pushing myself to run faster, I sprinted down the nearly deserted street. I could hear the smashing of glass and gunshots behind me, only matched by screams of terror, as they invaded Szczebrzeszyn like a tidal wave. Drowning any Jews that were too slow to escape. I cried out as my knees buckled, causing me to collapse to the ground. Too weak to stand, I dragged myself towards a nearby car and crawled underneath it. Trying not to make a sound, I lay there tear spilling silently down my face. My breath, like a dragon's fire, clouded the surrounding air. There was no escape. I listened to the smashing and shouting increase in volume, and held my breath…
In 2013 I went to Israel with my family, cousins and some of the people who belong to our Temple to watch my cousin become bat mitzvahed in the middle of a dessert. It was the most wonderful experience that I had ever had and I will never forget about it. I was 11 years old at the time when I went.…
