I did not have much of a family so I had to take care of my child on my own. My family was not the type to go to for help because they would take from someone leaving them helpless. Looking in the mirror one day after being knocked down for not cooking dinner, made me look into my soul through my eyes; I decided enduring a life with so much Domestic Violence that it was not for me. That day has come and I am on my way to achieving my first goal, obtaining my GED. I was researching online for resources to see where I can sign up for the GED classes and eventually take the GED test. I signed up for the GED classes at a school called Y. H. Thomas Community Center and received all my materials to start studying that same day. Although I signed up, I did not succeed the first time. I came across a teacher that I could not understand, and eventually I just got tired and dropped out. One day at work, I found out that I was up for a promotion. They told me that without my GED, I would not be qualified to receive the

By having the right mindset and setting out to do the goals I said I would I have overcome so much in such a little amount of time. At the end of my fifth grade year, I unexpectedly got accepted to Risley Early College Academy, a program designed to prepare middle and high school students for college. Risley was originally an ordinary high school, which has been standing for years, but someone decided to turn the school into a college program for young students. Throughout my years at Risley, the school was ranked as number one in testing, which proved that the program was a success. Even though the program was doing so well and had so many achievements academically, the school closed down due to budget cuts. The closing of Risley left me stranded with no other option for a school in mind. This was only part of God master plan.…

When I was in high school I wasn't a very good student. I really didn't apply myself to anything. I had no dreams of going to college or doing anything special with my life. No one had ever encouraged me to do any better than I was or to try harder. My parents were not college graduates, they both had full time jobs plus nine kids to raise. I knew that there wasn't any money to send me to college, and my guidance counselor never explained to me about financial aid. I graduated, got a job and worked one dead end job after another until I got married and started a family. I spent the next fifteen years raising my daughter and encouraging her education. About a year ago my husband decided he wanted a divorce and I was left wondering; “What am I going to do now?” Since graduation I have regretted not going to college, I have always wanted to work with children, either as a counselor or in social work. My parents suggested that maybe I look into going back to school. I applied at Southern New Hampshire University and I was admitted. My first reaction was that I'm going to fail, I started by taking two classes every eight weeks and to my surprise I didn't fail and I loved it. I had to take some time off to finalize the divorce and when I was mentally ready I applied to Ashford. I started last year thinking that I was going to fail and realized that if I try hard enough I can achieve my goals. I'm not scared of failing anymore, I am however afraid of letting myself down for not trying hard enough, and for me that isn't good enough anymore. I want better for myself and I want to look in the mirror everyday and be proud of who I see.…

I am here to discuss how hard of a situation is has been for me to get back into school. I have been out of school for 10 years and never thought it would be this difficult. We hear every day the sayings and advertisements of “go back to school” or “continue your education, it’s as easy as 1-2-3”. Well, I’m here to say that I have had one heck of a time. From not having my parents push me in the right direction when I was younger to branching off and not finding out these things until later. I certainly don’t want to say it is too late to go back to school but I do feel to be a late bloomer. Anyhow, when I first got into Austin, I had to go back and forth to the campus 4-5 times without having any accurate information from a counselor. I mean, I’m a hands on person.…

I was ecstatic to be accepted into this boarding school and I believe that it is the best high school in the state. It gave me more challenging math classes and the teachers are more clear and easier to understand, making the subjects easier to learn than at my previous school. There is also a more diverse selection of science classes. In addition I feel that the english classes are taught a lot better. I deeply acknowledge the way Mt. Edgecumbe High School operates and I am proud to be a Brave. Now at my second year at Mt. Edgecumbe High School I will be taking an Introduction to Law Enforcement class to start on one of my goals. Firstly, I began missing school a lot starting in October. I missed 20 days throughout the fall semester of junior year alone. I had lots of homework o make up due to all of my absences and Mrs. Henrey was very helpful in helping me succeed with the homework I missed. Mrs. Henrey went out of her way to help me. She would have me come into her classroom during lunch so that I would not have to sit in the cafeteria, which was very loud, to help me concentrate on homework. She also tried to help me understand what I was missing even if it was a class she was not teaching. Mrs. Henrey was an English teacher and she would repeatedly try and me with other classes such as Calculus and Childhood Development even though that was not her field of expertise. She was very helpful in keeping…

There are many types of goals. Growing up, I always dreamed of being two things: a mother and a nurse. I am blessed to have two wonderful children ages 14 and 16 and have had the privilege of being able to be a stay-at-home mom during their younger years. Now that they are older and a bit more independent, I have decided to go back to school and fulfill my goal of earning my degree in Nursing. Throughout the years of growing and maturing, I have learned how important it is to have good morals, values, goals, a passion for something, and a good education. I have not only taught my children the importance of these characteristics, but I have also shown them that regardless of one’s age or stage in life, that…

I am entering my 9th year as a GED (General Education Diploma) Instructor. My students range from ages 16 to last year we had a very proud graduate that was 79. Each of these students carries with them a personal story/struggle/learning disability that somehow kept them from graduating high school. This is where I come in. I am not only their teacher; I’m their support, their mentor, their cheerleader, their “MOM”. For some reason or another, the traditional high school setting did not work for these students. Our nation has always put a negative spin on “dropouts” or even “GED”. However, it is ludicrous to believe that one system of doing something is going to satisfy the masses. Not everyone learns the same. When a student enrolls they carry this stigma with them that gives them a learning hindrance. Their image of being unintelligent hinders their learning. As an educator, it is my job to build self-esteem, help them stay motivated, and encourage educational growth. All of this in a nutshell describes my philosophy of education. I often reiterate to students, “Build upon your strengths and do not stress about your weaknesses.” Our students’ goal is not to pass with a score of perfection, simply just to pass. For example: if frustration with fractions is…

My life as a teenager would soon be coming to an end and my life as mommy would be coming up faster then expected. It all started June 10th 2012, my family and I had just finished eating our dinner celebrating my achievement of getting my GED. I had received cards, gifts, and even some money from my family members for finally receiving this GED after being out of school for my senior year. Everybody was so happy for me even my dad, which was not a very common emotion for him to express towards me. Unfortunately their happiness would soon be long gone. For it was the night before this that I had five different tests all of which said the same thing in different ways, I was pregnant. I was not ready for this kind of responsibility. I was not ready physically, emotionally, and financially to take care of even myself yet now I had to find a way to provide all of those things for a child. I was only seventeen, turning eighteen in July; I was still a child myself. To many people I would be viewed as a delinquent because of getting pregnant. On the other hand, others might have seen this coming since my mom also had me at a young age. Many also believe all teens who get pregnant will fail. Although these beliefs and views from others were in my head at the time, I knew I needed to tell my family I was pregnant, find out how far along I was, and make a life changing decision.…
