Have you ever met an athlete with a god given talent for a sport? Or have you ever had to play a sport to go “pro” and provide for your family? Well Jerry Lee Rice born October 13, 1962 raised in Starkville, Mississippi had a hard childhood; Jerry grew up “Simon pure”, no street lights, no sidewalks, no sidewalks, no stadium or concerts. As a youngster Jerry saw a lot of poor events in his life but very little of luxury that later became a part of his life. His father, a brick mason built a home for his large family. When money was short, rice helped his father carry bricks and mix mortar. When money was rational, Jerry started to worry about sports. In high school jerry played every position, from quarterback to tackle. The coach started to see that jerry can play at a college level; from there jerry made a promise to a Crawford coach, Archie Cooley, to take a recruiting trip.…

    Moses the Leader

Moses was a leader of the Hebrews and probably the most important figure in Judaism. He led the Hebrew people out of Egypt and into the Promise Land. His story is told in the book of Exodus, and begins when he was first born during the time that the pharaoh of Egypt declared that all male Hebrew babies were to be drowned at birth. Moses’ mother Yocheved, hid Moses and placed him in a basket in the reeds of the Nile River, where he was then found by the pharaoh’s daughter, who kept Moses and raised him as her own. In the story of Moses, he grows up and stumbles upon an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave. Out of anger Moses murders the Egyptian, and flees to Midian to escape his crime (Hays, 2000). In Midian, Moses rests besides a well, where he sees seven daughters fetching water for their sheep. Shepherds come along and begin to harass the women. Moses does not agree with the shepherds’ actions. He scares them off and then gives water to the women. The young women tell their father, Reuel, of Moses’ kind actions. Reuel rewarded Moses by giving one of the daughters, Zipporah, to Moses for him to marry (Hays, 2000). At the age of eighty, Moses had talked to god on the mountain known as Mount Sinai. Moses stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. God had much to tell Moses, and wanted to instruct the people on how to live. God shared with Moses the rules he would like for the people to follow, these rules are called The Ten Commandments. By following these rules the people would have less sadness. Each commandment is equally important, and it was Gods way of protecting the people (DLTK, n.d.).…

I have seen some reports about this book, and most of them were nothing more than rehashing of what we already know about the Old Testament. Some took a favorite chapter or person and centered on it, while others gave a condensed summary of as many chapters as they could, given the space allotted to them. I decided to take another approach, which is to break down the impact that I personally feel the book would have and on whom that impact will have the most effect. The problem with this is that it would take about twelve pages per chapter to fully cover the book, and secondly, many issues would have to be visited and revisited. To avoid this problem I addressed a single positive issue, the readability of the book, and a single negative issue, doctrine issues, and the single issue of implied truth. That being true, let me began with the readability and relevance of the book. When you think of an Old Testament Survey, no matter who it is written by, the first question that comes to mind is, will the literary, historic, and theological issues of the Old Testament be presented in such a way to give a greater understanding of God 's redemptive work toward humanity. In almost every case these issues are attached to a taunt chronological line of events having the literary and theological issues hung from them in much the same way one would hang our delicate washables from a clothes line in the backyard. However, Dr. Elmer Towns addresses these very same issues from a completely different perspective. Rather than draw his attention on the liner events of the Old Testament Dr. Elmer Towns directs his attention on the people who God has used in the Old Testament. The Events are still there, but now theological and literary issues seem to become secondary…

There are many places throughout the Bible where mountains play an important role. From the flood, Mount Ararat was the place that the arc settled on when the waters went down. Abraham was told to go up to the top of a mountain in the land of Moriah to sacrifice his son to The Lord. Christ was transfigured on, you guessed it, a mountaintop. In fact, one of the most prolific and well known sermons in the Bible, if not the most well known, is actually referred to as "The Sermon on the Mount".…

Nyssan in The Life of Moses uses typology regularly to make his point known that Christ is personified in the life of Moses. Take Moses’ staff for example. The rod is made into a snake just as Jesus “was made into sin for our sake.” Christ in John 3:14 represents the staff that has to be lifted up for our sins, and by “becoming sin He became also a serpent, which is nothing other than sin.” With this rod of faith, Moses would “prevail against the Egyptian serpents” and triumph over the powers of darkness that were so deeply imbedded in the culture . Just like the staff, Jesus is “invested with our sinful nature” deeply, becoming like sin so that humans may have freedom from the bondage of the powers of the earth. This typological argument shows the clear connection between God’s work in Moses’ staff and the freeing of the Israelite people, which communicates God’s prevalent and steady hand in the lives of His people from the outset of human history.…

The first 39 books of the larger work called the Bible, is called the Old Testament. The Bible itself is arguably the best selling and most read book of all time, yet it’s well known to be quite challenging to read through and understand. The Old Testament portion of the Bible, notably the most difficult portion of the Bible for most to study and follow, yields 39 books from multiple authors, and spans over 4000 years of crucial world and church history. If that were not enough to take on, the Old Testament comes our way through multiple styles of authorship and formats, including but not limited to, books of history, law, proverbs, ethics, philosophy, treatises, dramas, songs, epics, biographies, and letters. There have been many books written and published to survey, explain, and/or bring to light the Old Testament, but none more helpful to me than the review subject of this paper, the work of Dr. Elmer L. Towns, entitled “A Journey Through the Old Testament”.…
