My mother read to me as a child for fun and school. She read us books such as, Go Dog Go, You Read to Me, I’ll Read to you, and To Kill a Mockingbird. My father read books to my sister and me, such as Fairy Realm, Little House, and Percy Jackson, before bedtime. I now find reading very enjoyable, even though my dyslexia has made reading more difficult.
Although I enjoy reading now, I used to have many hard days when reading felt like a chore. I remember my mother and me sitting on the couch reading together. There were days when I loved it and wanted to keep going, but there were also days when I would just break down crying because I could not understand it and everyone else did. She also bought numerous cassettes and CD’s with read books on them. When I was little I wrote a small book for a book fair at my last school, Valley Oaks Charter School, for which I earned a participation ribbon. I participated in several other extracurricular activates; for instance, Odyssey of The Mind, International day, and The Science Fair. Odyssey of the mind is a team of five to seven people and the team has about ten months to complete their problem. We got the “Not So Hounted House” problem where we had to build a building that looked hunted but was not and we had to write a skit about nine minutes in length. International day is a group of children from Valley Oaks Charter School got together and each did a report on a forgen countrys. Science fair is where children reascherced and created interesting math or science. My sister and I once made it to the state cience fair and I enjoyed it very much. I set them up at a kiddy table and copied them all out, illustrated them and stapled them together. My parents were very kind and played along and checked out my books, although I drought they read all of them. Im glad my mother and father have helped me with my reading so much in my child hood.
Even though reading is difficult for me, I have learned that I should not let anything stand in my way. I think that reading aloud and listing to them, and getting books read to me helped me a lot in my early years. I think book are to be enjoyed, not disliked. I know that it has been a struggle but that is not going to stop me now. I am so lucky to have been adopted by such a wonderful mother and
