As a senior sister and clinical mentor I will ensure that all nurses are taught in an environment that is conducive for learning and consideration will be given to individual abilities. My experience as a mentor in different hospitals in London gave me the opportunity to appreciate the diversities in learning styles. This, I am sure will be of great benefit to your hospital both at an academic and clinical level.…

I have enjoyed all the time I spent on the stroke ward during my placement with my mentor the rest of the staff. I had the opportunity to learn new skills every day which made me to know better and improve on practice. One the new skills I learned was giving an IM injection to a patient. Before I had to give the injection, my mentor explained how it is done and then she was there to supervise.…
I have established many great relationships with different doctors and APRNS. In the ICU setting where I was employed, I did notified two physicians which I worked with about my plans for Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and both supported me and agreed to help me with a preceptorship in pulmonary and critical medicine. Dr. Erasto Cortes and Dr. Ahmed Hajj are the two physicians which I worked with and still keep in touch with. I currently work with two great surgeons, Dr. Michael Lara and Dr. Jorge Acosta, both which are also aware of my plans and have been very supportive. They both agree to also precept me in General surgery, trauma and gastrointestinal surgeries. I am currently employed with Del Sol Medical Center and my current Director is…
For this week's discussion I chose to focus on the importance of mentorship in nursing. This will focus on identifying the characteristics of mentors that have (or could be) most successful in recruiting and training diverse nurses and nurse faculty. At my facility me and another fellow nurse are head of our units mentoring program. This program that we have implemented focuses on the new graduated nurse and follows them through their first year of nursing. The new graduated nurse is paired up with a seasoned day shift and night shift nurse to answer any questions, facilitate a mentor-new graduate relationship and help orient the new nurse and try to build a strong, confident nurse. We routinely once a month see that the new nurse and their mentor meet to see how thing are going and see if they have any problems or concerns whether it be clinical skills, problems with other staff/physicians, prioritizing, and task management. Through this we are hoping to be able to increase morale, patient satisfaction and increase nurse retention. As new nurses enter the workforce they face a challenge going from student nurse to professional nurse. One must be prepared mentally, physically and emotionally to be a mentor and to set a productive learning environment for the new graduate.…
After leaning about each concept in Nursing 201 I have become more competent than before about the profession of nursing in areas such as evidence based practice, patient centered care and many other areas. I think after learning about patient centered care and the nurse-patient communication I am better prepared to interact with patients. Some things that I find to be especially helpful are to not ask close-ended questions or anything that will result in a simple yes or no, use general leads, use silence and to paraphrase and reflect what the patient says.…
Next, try to emulate those nurses you find to be efficient and effective. Ask questions. Offer to assist them, so you can learn by watching and doing. Hopefully you are given a preceptor who is used to working with new nurses. It helps to have someone who is experienced as a trainer, and who is patient. Overly-harsh nurse trainers only help to blow potentially good future nurses right out of the field. If you find yourself with such, do not be afraid to ask your nurse manager for a change in preceptors.…
My duty as a nurse is to promote good and do no harm and respect the patient as the most basic and universal principle. According to the code, my most fundamental accountability is to the patient. In addition, it is my duty to make the most wise and ethical decisions for what is best for the organization. As a leader, I am self-aware of my values and basic beliefs about the rights, duties and goals of human beings. Unfortunately, here utilitarianism of what is best for the common good outweighs what is best for the individual. Mr. Cole has the right to leave against medical advice and it saddens me the issues they may face being denied home health care, however, it is not justified to withhold information from the physician. I could be risking…
Politically speaking, mentoring truly matters in nursing because the relationship that is created between the new graduates with their mentors provides positive feedback and is indeed a great investment in the health care. On the long run, confident nurses improve the overall health outcome of the system as a whole as well as patients' health, which naturally leads to reduction of fiscal spending on patient's readmission into hospitals and less occurrence of medical errors.…
I struggled for several days thinking of an experience that would best answer the discussion question. The difficulty lies not so much in coming up with a situation, any situation; but a real-life experience that I could honestly say it was personal and not just a hypothetical story.…
When I was in nursing school, I never thought about the dangers that lurk in the darkness, the things I…
When I was thinking about writing this journal post a particular experiences came into my head. I pushed it aside for the fact that it didn't fit the criteria for this journal. However, after struggling trying with writer's block, I gave in to my original thought. The experience I am going to be talking about doesn't fit the criteria of being a patient/nurse interaction because I wasn't with a “patient” or in a clinical setting.…
Experience is the most important quality that a mentor must posses. A good mentor has to have been through or know about the problems they are mentoring for. No one wants advice from someone who has no idea what he or she is talking about. A mentor should have had a mentor before so that they know what they are supposed to do and say. Being a recovering alcoholic, my mother has been one of the many mentors in my life. She has been in A.A. (Alcoholics Anonymous) for twenty-one years, which has helped her become a mentor for me. She has been through many issues in her life. I have also been through some of these same issues in my own life. I had a problem with alcohol, and she was there. I got involved in A.A. with her. She understood what I was going through because she had been there as well. She was able to help me through it by telling me how she was able to overcome her addiction. We learn through the experience and mistakes of our mentors.…
Creating and maintaining positive relationships with patients is essential to being a great nurse. Being a great nurse is not just what one knows, or does, it is also how one interacts with their patient as they do it. To be a great nurse one needs to be a relational being, which is the focus of the Relational Practice course. An individual needs to possess the various critical thinking skills (Facione & Facione, 1994), encompass some positive values and beliefs that will facilitate their nursing practice, and be mindful of the habits they have, and whether they may help or hinder…
This essay will discuss a clinical experience in which I feel more competent in practicing. I will use a reflective model to discuss how I have achieved the necessary level of competence in my nurse training programme. The reflective model I have chosen to use is Gibbs model (Gibbs 1988). Gibbs model of reflection incorporates the following: description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an action plan (Gibbs 1988). The model will help facilitate critical thought process as it relates theory to practice. Discussion will include the knowledge underpinning practice and the evidence base for the clinical skill. A conclusion to the essay will then be given which will discuss my reflection skills, acknowledge my competence and show my personal and professional development.…
