Ever since grade eight when I first started really thinking of what kind of career i want in the future it was always something in the medical field. In the past year I have found the career that I believe suits …show more content…
me well and where I can use my skills to help people. When I graduate highschool I plan on attending Thompson Rivers University’s respiratory therapy program. I am planning on taking the four year path to complete the program as well as receive a bachelor of health science degree.
In highschool I have tried to be involved in both academic as well as extracurricular classes. Starting in grade nine I joined the “MEI Screaming Eagles Marching Band” at my school. This class has allowed me to not only grow musically but also use the skills taught to perform in charities, parades, and sporting events. Another non academic class that I am involved in is “Peer Tutoring. This class is designed for students in grade twelve to work with students that have learning disabilities by helping them with their school work as well. I have also been involved in the leadership class offered at my school for the past year.
Although I have always believed my school work was important and came first, I decided to also focus some of my attention on activities outside of school. I realized that it was important for me to use some of my time to help out in the community. Starting in grade eight all the way to now, I have volunteered in a local Pathfinder Club every sunday for two hours. This club strongly resembles the well known Scouting Clubs. In Pathfinder Club I was able to help teach children camping honors that they could use when we all went on outdoor trips. Besides helping teach outdoor honors I also helped teach skills such as cooking and craft making. I was also required to be first aid certified to ensure that the children involved in the club were as safe as possible.
This past summer I have also volunteered at Mountain View Summer Camp in Hope where I spent three weeks working with children ages seven to fourteen.
My responsibilities at summer camp were to help lead activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, and outdoor survival. I also volunteered my time in the kitchen where I helped cook the food and clean up after meal preparation was complete. In the evenings my duties as a co-counselor involved leading the campers down to campfire, discussing the events of the day, and getting them ready for bed. Volunteering at summer camp allowed me to realize how much I enjoy working with other people.
During spring break of grade eleven I, along with ten others, traveled to Guatemala for two weeks for a service trip. During the time there our biggest project was helping complete the construction of a career school. Our team also worked with the children attending the already open elementary and middle school, and supplying families in need with baskets of food and supplies. The trip to Guatemala helped me gain a better perspective of the world we live in and I am continually reminded of the time I spent there through the two girls that I am sponsoring
there.
This October I have become involved in a care home, “The Residence in Mission”, that is specialized to care for elderly people suffering from dementia. Every Sunday I volunteer at the care home by playing games with the residence, helping them make crafts, and by just taking the time to talk to them. My time there not only impacts them but also impacts me in a major way.
