My Most Memorable Experience My most memorable experience would have to be the first time I stepped into a dance studio. I recall walking into an old musty room I could smell the sweat from afar. The dance teacher was repeating words that would forever stay with me for years to come. Five, six, seven, eight! The teacher stood in the center of the room clapping her delicate hands to the rhythm of the drum. As I stood there I was transformed. I started to perspire with excitement. I could see the dancers their faces full of intensity stomping to the rhythm of the drum. I knew at that moment that I was soon going to be part of that group. My body began to prepare itself for the intensity of my first class, that would forever be part of my life. Folklorico dance was soon to become part of my life. I quietly sat down and began to stretch my muscles to prepare for my class. I could see skirts of many vibrant colors twirling and spinning making beautiful designs in the air. I stepped into my folklorico shoes. These shoes are especially made for this type of dance. They have nails on the tip of the shoe and on the heal, this enables the dancer to make sounds that are different from those used in tap shoes or flamenco shoes. These shoes are hard to find, they are usually ordered from cities like Guadalajara, or Mexico. I joined the other dancers their faces full of passion and intensity. They were already producing beautiful “zapateados”, Toe heal flat, toe, heal flat. I began to move my feet to rhythm of the beat.

The dancing has already started when I arrived. I was told that they were doing the ‘Intertribal Dance’. In this particular dance, everyone is welcome to take part – even the spectators. The dancers moved in a circular clockwise motion a without any particular moves. They then invited the public to join them in the dance. I was hesitating to try it at first. But I told myself that won’t get the experience anywhere else. So, I decided to just do it. The basic step is the same step used by traditional dancers. First, one foot is tapped on one beat, placed down flatly. The action is then repeated with the opposite foot, without missing a beat. I enjoyed taking part in the dance as it was the only chance for me to experience the Native American culture closely.…

In the next song, Cesar ‘Pudy’ Ballum Ballumbrosio performed zapateador dance which was one kind of dance styles from Mexico. He worn a pair of zapateador shoes, and he clicked and tapped on the stage. The sound had lively rhythm punctuated, and I was in high spirited. The tempo was allegro or vivace, and the dynamics was crescendo which was from mezzo forte to forte. In addition, the vocal piece was syllabic, and the melodic intervals was small because each note was moved so quickly.…

As dance, of all styles, becomes prevalent, an increasing number of people choose to dance for their profession and career. They devotedly train and practice dancing in order to show audiences the best performances. Audiences, as a result, learn to appreciate dance performances as pieces of art works. They become more willing to see how dancers use their bodies to express a special feeling or to tell a distinctive story aesthetically and exquisitely. Nevertheless, they seem to forget about a group of people who have physical defects and cannot dance freely as they wish. Amongst this group, some lost their limbs, whereas the others lost their sense of hearing and sight. Many of them, however, have one thing in common despite their different disabilities, that is, they love to dance as much as the able-bodied. Therefore, several dance companies have stood out to support these disabled dancers and offer them the opportunity for dancing on the stage. Amongst these companies, Candoco Dance Company, consisting of disabled and able-bodied dancers, has the most impact on erasing…

Ever since I was young I remember dance always being one of those things that was always there when I needed it. Everyday I looked forward to going to class and working hard, doing my best to get better everyday. I officially started dancing when I was three, however, it wasn’t until I got to the age of around 10 or 11. This was about a year after I moved to Kansas City and when I just started going to the Kansas City Ballet. The whole experience changed my point of view completely over not just dance but ballet to. I would definitely not be where I am today if it wasn’t for moving to KCB.…

My personal well-remembered event started back when I was in the 3rd grade. I was about 9 years old, in a classroom with about 20-25 students. My teacher was Mrs. Lopez and she was not particularly my favorite teacher. Therefore, I did no feel comfortable talking to her when there was an issue and I certainly didn’t want her to confront me about a problem, because she intimidated me tremendously! It all started on an typical morning, after we had put away our backpacks, lunches, turned in our homework, and were quietly waiting in our desk for further instruction.…

Years after, I ventured off to a local dance company. This was a big chance in dance styles, it took more strength and technique skills, but I still was determined to perfect it all. It seemed like somewhat of a small choice to me at the time- you see, I was the type of kid who wasn’t focused on any sport for too long. On my first day I was unsure of what was to come- I walked in slowly, and during class I was busying myself with the task of learning and remembering faces and steps, trying to keep up with both simultaneously. Within a couple of weeks, I was having much more fun than I anticipated. Four years later, and I still have the same infatuation with dance that I did back then.…

Although there are many events that I could talk about that have influenced me and my life, there is one that stands out to me. This past year alone has been a tremendous year of growth for me; all thanks to being in dance. I have danced for 12 years altogether, and for the past two years, I found myself at a wonderful studio filled with people who became my family. Not long after I started attending, I was invited into their handpicked Repertory group. When I accepted, I had no idea what was in store for me. I was then asked to be a teacher's assistant for a younger group of kids, which was a huge honor. Eventually, my group was told that we had to hand choreograph a solo for us to preform in front of the entire team and panel of judges. To any other person, these things might look truly amazing and an adventure that not many have had the pleasure to experience.…

I had taken dance and trained to be on this team for basically my entire life and felt like I had this whole dance team thing in the bag, but nothing could have prepared me for our first outdoor practice.
