As early as the developmental stages in the womb of our mothers, every person has a reaction to music. The reaction maybe completely different, but in some way every single individual exhibits some type of feeling towards the rhythms and the words of the various genres of music among society today. Hip-hop and Neo soul are two genres of music that is often compared to one another but are different.…
Today there are many different genres of music. There are many types of music for anyone. Country and Rap music may be two most popular types of music. Many people who like country dislike rap music and the other way around. Many people who listen to rap would never listen to country or ever admit to it. On the other hand people who listen to country may enjoy some rap music. In each type of music, they have many sub-genres. There also are many stereotypes that are associated with these different genres of music. Many people think that country music and rap are completely different but they do have some similarities.…
The first concert I choose to attend was the UMKC ensemble series. It featured the wind ensemble and the wind symphony.…
I can still recall the first hip hop album I listened to. It was Reasonable Doubt by Jay Z. I remember how I instantly fell in love with the lyrics. I hadn’t heard anything like it before, primarily because I only listened to R&B and some watered down rap music. The lyrics were hard hitting. They meant something. I could his hunger through the speakers as he rapped his song entitled “Can I Live” which said “Well we hustle out of a sense of, hopelessness/Sort of a desperation/Through that desperation, we 'come addicted/Sorta like the fiends we accustomed to servin” (3-6). I also remember how my older brother looked at me like I was an idiot because I was listening to an album that had come out in 1996, in 2001. He didn’t quite understand the difference between rap and hip hop music; but I saw the difference right away. Hip hop means something. Rap is just a good beat to dance to.…
Dick Clark once said, ¨Music is the soundtrack of your life.¨ Music is one of the most powerful and influential things in my life. Without the melodies and harmonies of music, my life would feel bland and meaningless. I have a very busy schedule and sometimes it is too easy to lose meaning in my everyday tasks, but with music I am able to keep meaning in my life. I use music to get me through the activities of my everyday life. Whether it is cleaning my room, doing homework, or just relaxing, music makes everything better. I think that music can convey feelings and emotions extraordinarily well. When words cannot do the job, music can. Along with that, I think that music accompanies memories very well also. Going back to Dick Clark’s quote, I think I would be able to make a timeline of my life just using song titles, albums, and…
My love for music began in middle school. At that time, I was socially awkward with very few friends. To compensate, I buried myself in music. My dedication led to many honors and admiration from my peers. However, when I got to high school, my relationship with music fundamentally changed. The arrival of an overly demanding teacher coupled with a long episode of depression robbed me of my passion to play. As time progressed, the pain I felt became too much to bear, and I became desperate for an outlet in which I could express myself positively. My quest led me to music once more, but classical was no longer the genre of choice. It was in hip hop and rap music that I found the will to overcome mental illness.…
I come from a family with a rich background in music. I don’t know a single family member that can’t play at least one instrument or doesn’t know how to read a piece of sheet music. When I was very young my mother would play music for me and sing to me. My father would also play the drums very loudly so the entire neighborhood could hear. Due to the fact that I was brought up around so much talent and music appreciation, naturally I decided that I wanted music to be a large part in my life forever and I want to be able to share it with the world. When I was in elementary school I decided to join the choir. This was a big moment for me because music was what made me want to get up and live my life, it was always something to look forward to.…
I had always loved music. My parents once told me I sang before I spoke, I played piano before I could ride a bike. I listened to everything from mariachi music to soft jazz. For me, there are secrets hidden in the melody of a song, filling me with a need to decode it. That was why I had always loved to play and related to my old piano teacher, Rachel, who felt the same as I did.…
One of the most influential, and probably the most popular types of music is Rap. Rap music has its own stereotype of what it stands for. Many people think rap music is always about shooting cops, drugs, money and sex. Rappers use quick speaking rhyming sounds to aim for the urban ghetto and speaks of poverty, drugs, money, and fame. Many trends are also associated with rap music. For example, wearing baggy pants, gold chains, and violent…
People are drawn to the style of rap music because of the beat of the song. Many people like to listen to rap music while dancing because it has a loud constant rhythmic beat. The beat to rap music is also the reason why many people put huge speakers in their cars. The manipulation of words and the order they are put in to make them rhyme is also a big portion in why people are privy to the style of rap music. With rap music there is not really any kind of vocal singing it is all done at one tone and spoken quite fast. Rhyming is the key part to rap music, the ways that the words flow and the way they rhyme is something that attracts people to rap. Battles from a rap concert are also a reason why people listen to rap. In a battle two rappers go against each other trying to win the contest. They win the contest by being able to rap with the thoughts that they are thinking at that time about the other rapper, there is no prior knowledge on what is going to be said so they brainstorm all this during the battle. Rap music is loved by some people but others are also likely to listen to country…
My music performance career made a debut when I was very young. The church was my first audience when I began to fall in love with the stage. I always took pride in singing in Christmas and Easter programs, and I eventually went on to sing solos. Until middle school, church was my sole outlet for music performance. However, in middle school, I decided to join choir and band. My life suddenly became filled with concerts, honor bands, and other performances. I consider these the moments that I really began to learn what performance was all about. Music has helped me learn many important life lessons that make me the person I am today. Music performance has been one of the most impactful parts of my life because it has taught me confidence, artistry, and dedication.…
Rap music is a very different genre of music from the rest because it keeps changing its influence among black Americans. From the book by Debra Rosenthal, she defines rap music as an art that is well connected to the African American literature (Rosenthal 661). Rhythm and rhyme are emphasized in the music. On the other hand, melody and harmony are not given much of a priority. From the article, one can get the point that she hates on the music because she states that rap keeps changing the African American slang and refers it as rituals and figures to the black culture. However, I strongly disagree with the conclusion because according to me these black rappers have worked their way up to the top to gain the international recognition. They have also used their prowess in rhyme and rhythm to win their fans. They have taken up the challenge to use the most challenging aspect of music that many other genres do not use. On the point where she has related the rap on only blacks and the way it keeps changing the slang, she misses the point because it is not all the…
To start off, I have listened to numerous types of music throughout my life. I started off listening to hip-hop and rap music. I believe that my sister influenced this. This is because I listened to music in the car whenever I rode with her and I never got to choose the station. She listened to the radio station Hot 104.1, which is current hip-hop and rap.…
Everyone expresses themselves in a variety of ways getting lost in their own world only to be understood by them, this lost realm in which people enter is very vague, there isn’t much to it but the feelings and emotions brought upon by the music. Certain songs or artists/bands seem to strike very emotional ties with many people and that includes me, but idea of what music is undefined. Music doesn’t take shape or size but it essentially forms a bond with the ones listening to it. There are many different genres of music I enjoy listening too, but my favorite type of music I enjoy the most is a combination of hip hop and rap music. This is my favorite type of music because it tells stories I can relate to, there are many different types of hip hop and rap music, and I can listen to it in whatever kind of mood I am in. Hip hop has so many different forms from spoken word, rap and R&B all of which have shaped the culture of hip hop.…
Since the beginning of time music has been a major inspiration to most people. Music helps us to come through some of the toughest times in our lives as well as celebrating the highlights of our lives. There is not just one music genre that moves or inspires us most people are ecletic in a music sense. Although, different music genres evolve from others and are built on other music foundations we all seem to have our favorites. While some R&B artist sing and rap as well as Hip Hop artist rap and sing, Hip Hop and R&B are very much alike. These two genres are my two favorites because they inspire me ,…
