If a monument were to be added to the National Mall, it should be one of a powerful woman; a woman that has made great change and contributed to this world. Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Katherine Johnson created important mathematical data to launch some of NASA’s first successful space missions. If it were not for those three powerful African American women, we may have not known about the wonders of space. If a monument were to be added to the National Mall, it should be of “human computers,” Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Katherine Johnson. If it were not for the influential women, Neil Armstrong, Alan Shepard, and John…

While societal pressures and norms may give opportunity for individuals to stand out, it has also taken over societies such as Scarsdale High School to a large extent. In Scarsdale, children will feel an aching need to meet the high expectations of their surrounding peers. Many have credited this to an intangible force and need to always impress teachers, peers, and parents as well. Children have admitted to doing extracurriculars and community service solely for the purpose of getting into the best university possible. That may not be an issue, however, in many cases these children are striving to get into colleges they may not even enjoy. In closing, societal pressures and norms may lead individuals to be courageous, however, it can negatively…

    Three biggest fears

One of my greatest fears is the fear of sharks. Silly right? When I was little, my grandmother would always take me and my other siblings down to the beach since her parents lived in florida. I would always take my goggles and snorkeler, swim out into the open ocean, and begin my search for sand dollars. One day came to where I had became lost in my search and found myself to be a little too far away from the shore. I popped my head out of the water and realized I couldn’t touch the bottom even though I had been able to see it. I dove back into the water only to find myself facing the side fin of a bull shark. I was instantly paralyzed with fear and thought I was looking death in the face. I swam as fast as I could to the sand bar because I knew it was closer to my location than the actual shore was. Once I was sitting on a whole bunch of sand and there was about an inch of water around me I was finally able to catch my breath. I crawled back to the shore where my family was and told them about my encounter. Being little they didn’t believe me, but not once did I go further than the sand bar after that. They told me to dry off because we were going to walk to a crab shack that happened to be on the beach we were on for lunch. We were only halfway between our set up and the crab shack when screams were coming from behind us. We…
