My Name Aint Mary
My Name Aint Mary
My name means traditional, it means short sweet answers, and always doing as told. I've never really gone by my name, for it is tradition, it is tradition to dye one's hair and get a black hills gold ring. The name is passed to every other generation and will continue to do so, for as much as I hate being like unoriginal tradition run in my blood and can’t be removed.
My answers are short and sweet, saying yes sir, and yes ma’am before running off to do as told. Yet piss me off and I’ll be sure to give you a piece of my mind.
What is in a name, a meaning? A personality? No. something unique? Spelling, sound, memories, passion. it is said ‘a rose by any other name would be just as sweet.’ therefore it is the same for any other.

weather was never over 85° and milk was more expensive then gas. My whole name is Helen Lonsdale Torrey but I always just liked Lonnie. My name is from a tradition in our family that has been in practice since the 1820s. The first daughter of the first daughter is named after the grandmothers middle name and that daughters middle name was the maiden name of the grandmother. Every generation the name Helen is exchanged for Hetty of the first born daughter. There is a silver cup with all of the names and dates of birth of those first born daughters; I am on that cup to be remembered forever.…

Mary D. Salter- Ainsworth was born in Glendale, Ohio in December of 1913. Her parents were both academics at Dickenson College. Her father majored in history, while Mary’s mother focused on teaching and nursing. According to her biography, Mary and her two sisters grew up in a very “close-knit family” (Ainsworth, 1983). The importance of education was definitely impressed upon the girls at an early age, and weekly trips to the library were a regular event. How many uncomfortable situations would I avoid by changing it, or scraping it off of my life once and for all. I guess it would make a substantial 180 degree turn in my life, but I would rather get interrogated a thousand times than change my last name. Aside from being something I was immediately born with, it is one of the few things that define me as an individual. Though not many look at it my way, I proudly hold on to it due to the enormous significance it holds. This word is a synonym for family and unity, which is the foundation of everything around me. With this, being content is the most important aspect a person has to focus on. Personally, my family brings joyfulness into my heart and is the one that can push me away from darkness. They are the building blocks who have helped me grow and stood by me since I was first born. Metaphorically speaking, my last name is the honorable representation of who I am as a person and the relationship I have with the people around me. So, why would I give up something so precious for the avoidance of something so…

I was supposed to be named Rachel. It was a compromise, my mother told me, from what my dad had picked: Raquel. Growing up, I had a friend named Rachel that was nothing like me: soft, composed, and the sweetest smile. As it is hebrew, the name comes from the biblical name meaning “O Beautiful One” or “female sheep”. While this is nice and all, it was much more fitting for my friend. Never could or would I pick the animal the sheep to describe myself.…

Research and archaeological evidence have revealed a truer story, rooted in fact and – as is so often the case – more fascinating than any amount of fiction.. Closes were named after the most prominent citizen or the most commonly found business to be on the close. Documents show that Mary King was a prominent businesswoman in the 1630’s. At that time she was a widow and a mother of four, who traded in fabrics and sewed for a living. It was highly unusual for a close to be named after a woman at that time, indicating Mary’s standing in the town.Conceived wisdom has it that the City Chamber's site was selected because of the ruinous and burnt-out state of the High Street Closes on the chosen spot. This was true of parts of Mary King's at the High Street end - but only on its eastern side. Mary King's Close-head (see map) was still the site of the Edinburgh Fishmonger Company's Oyster Bar which advertised opening hours from eight in the morning till ten at night, selling Lobster and fresh and pickled Oysters and, on the western side, of a substantial eight+ (garrets) storey tenement, which the City could not buy outright and remained in place, dominating the City Chambers quadrangle, until its final demolition in 1897. Neither…

On the other hand, my last name is my mother’s last name. My mom felt there were enough Duttweilers in this world - considering my father has four siblings, all with children (and some, even grandchildren) of their own. However, there weren’t going to be any more Fosters in the next generation - my aunt is unmarried. As a result, I inherited my mother’s last name, a bit untraditionally. With my mother ending up as the main breadwinner of the household, we also have an untraditional family structure, though, so it fits us.…
