Patient education has always been my number one strength as a nurse. I always find myself educating my patients about the importance of an appropriate diet, medication compliance, and activity level. As a nephrology nurse, I take care of patients with acute and chronic kidney disease. I constantly educating these patients about ways to promote their health and prevent any complication. For my dialysis patients, the primary education focus is teaching them the best methods to take care of their dialysis access “Fistula, Graft, or Central Hemodialysis Catheter”, fluid allowance, dietary restriction, medication adherence; and blood pressure, and glucose control. Hayes and Blais states, “The nurse has an opportunity to educate individuals and groups in the community about disease/injury prevention and maintaining health” (121). I recently was taking care of a patient who decided to consume a banana during his dialysis treatment. Banana contain potassium, which is one of the restrictions in the renal diet because the kidney is no longer able to excrete this electrolyte from the body and the accumulation of extra potassium can cause arrhythmias and death if not treated on time. For this reason, I immediately approached the patient and explained to him how he should stay away from bananas and all potassium rich food such as tomatoes, orange juice, spinach, potatoes... I know that my manager and co-worker rely on me every time I am schedule to work. For this reason, I always arrive to work at least 10minutes earlier than my start time and offer to stay late when coverage is needed. As a nephrology nurse, I do Oncall at least once a week for urgent cases. During the Oncall night, I make sure I am ready to head to the hospital as soon as I receive a phone call from my nephrologist regarding an emergency dialysis treatment. In addition, I always put my patients’ well-being first while taking care of them. Using my acquired experience and good judgment while monitoring the clients is a must to maintain
