In Guillermo Verdecchia’s play, American Borders/Fronteras Americanas, he talks about the postcolonial effect on the world. Verdecchia talks about the use of lenses to see the different view points of society. For example, in the play he says, “I check into the Hotel de Don Tito, listed on page 302 of your Fodor’s as a moderate, small hotel with six suites, eight twins, eight singles, bar, homey atmosphere, and it’s located on one of the main streets in Santiago on Huérfanos at Huérfanos 578” (38-39). He shows how his Fodor, a well known and renounced travel guide, talks about how homey and ‘safe’ Hotel Don Tito is. However, in reality, this so called in depth perception of a culture and country by a travel magazine is not as important or relevant as how it is seen to be first hand.…

I am interested to work with Upward Bound program because I want to gain knowledge and experience about mentoring students from less privileged background and subordinate social identity. This work experience will facilitate insights and hands-on experience to mentor and train high-school students to pursue higher education. Personally, I am a first-generation, poor class, and belong to lower caste social group in India; therefore, I understand the struggle of these students to reach to higher education and succeed. I have been associated with youth mentoring program in India and my one of the career goals is to support underprivileged student groups to join college education. Moreover, I am pursuing my doctoral program in Education and my focus of the research is subordinate student identity in higher education, which will broaden my…

My academic, professional and social skills have increased immensely since I have begun this program. Through this process I have gained a deeper understanding of what this chapter has to offer me. Primarily, a network of men with similar goals and similar backgrounds determined to develop each other. Learning is a lifelong process, and to join this network I would have access to unrivaled mentorship and experience. Furthermore, I would have the opportunity to give the same mentorship back to the newer members of the organization. Lastly,…

Throughout my life I have gone through very unfair things. There is always something between me and achieveing my goals, although those things aren't there to make life hard, but to make me fight for what I want. Before I used to say I didn't want to go to college and even if I did I wouldn't make it. Now I have a whole new different perspective and I really want to go to college to have both a good future and life. The reason there should be a spot for me in college are so many. I want to be the first one to graduate from college in my family. I want to be someone my little cousins would admire, a rolemodel. I would show them that even through the inequalities, the lack of money, and unfairness, I made it to college. Also I have my want of making something out of my life, no one wants to be a nobody. If you have the faith and belief in yourself, perseverance and effort, anything can be accomplished. If I make it to college I can help out and encourage my family to do the same. I want to go to college and graduate to become a Pediatrician which is what i've wanted to do all my life. I enjoy being with kids and I'd love to help them out. I could do all of this and more but going to college is a MUST. With a college education I'll achieve anything I set my mind, soul, and heart to do. I would try my best at everything, and stand on my own 2 feet, for my family, and especially for myself. If I get to receive a college education I would feel as if i'm on top of the world. Those are the reasons why their should be a spot for me in…

It means the opportunity to develop myself as a person and become a valued member of society. It means, that as the oldest brother and first generation in my family with the possibility to attend college, setting an example for my younger siblings about how to shape your own path and break that mindset of “do what you have to do” and replacing it with one which says, “do something that makes you happy.”…

The reason why i want to attend college is because it will be an honor to my family and especially to my mother. College is not common in my family because no one has gone to college yet and I would want to be the first in my family to attend a 4 year university. Going to college will make me feel proud of myself because I will make my mom proud and not just that, but make myself proud of all the accomplishments i have accomplished so far. Personally my career goals is to do something i'm just not going to enjoy for a temporality time, but for the rest of my life. The field where i would want to study is physical therapy or a field where i would be working with bones, possibly I can major in english. I come from a family of optimists. My parents are first generation immigrants to the USA and one value they highly regard is “optimism”. They strongly believe that one can overcome any obstacle as long as they are hopeful about the future and show resiliency to stick with the dream. My father came to the USA with $500 in his pocket and a dream to go to a top business school and succeed in corporate America. Today he is president of a Cummins business unit, but the path to get there involved washing dishes, mopping floors and a lot of education along the way. His story gives me a lot of inspiration and gives me optimism to pursue my own dream.…

Over the years, I have gained much more than what I lost. This country gave me the opportunity to discover what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. However, getting to where I am today has not been an easy road. I have had to overcome obstacles, face discrimination, and learn how to keep on going even when the going gets rough.…

America is one of greatest country in the world because of the endless opportunities that Americans have. The America that I believe in is a country that gives its people the rights of freedom along with other rights. Other rights could be the freedom of speech or the right to bear arms. America also gives people opportunities like jobs and education. America gives endless amounts of rights that make the country so great. For example, liberty is one of the greatest rights that America has. This gives any citizen of America the right to be anything that they want, as long as they put their mind to it. Some other rights include the right to bare arms which gives American the right to have weapons as self-defense. Freedom of speech is also a right…
