My Poetry Of Poems: A Polarizing Form Of Poetry
Poetry is an unusually polarizing form of literature. While many are elated by it, others could not care less about it. To me, I always considered myself to be one of the latter. However, now that I have been given the opportunity to select poems I admire instead of being forced to know a poem, I have started to really enjoy certain aspects of poetry. The poems I chose for my anthology were ones that I had an instant connection with, but also had a deeper meaning. The five poems I selected were “Snow,” by Louis Macneice, “Solitude,” by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, “Burning the Old Year,” by Naomi Shihab Nye, and “A Positive Change,” by Seema Chowdhury. First, I narrowed my poem choices to a few every time by picking the ones that had short and catchy …show more content…
Each poem left me with a life lesson. For example, the poem, “Burning the Old Year,” was about how vital is is to move on in life and leave the past behind. One other poem, “Solitude,” noted the importance of looking out for others. I love inspirational writing, and this is exactly what I found in these poems. Aside from this, I made one other intriguing observation about my choices in regards to the topic of change. Interestingly, I did not have this epiphany until I chose my very last poem, which had the word “change” in it, “A Positive Change.” This poem was about how change can be harnessed into an improved life. After reading this poem, I realized that all of my chosen poems have been about change. While the first poem was about the impact of little change, another poem was about the dismal transition of loss of happy memories, and the last poem was about how change can be a good thing. Through this subconscious decision, I soon began to recognize that one of my greatest weaknesses is not being able to adapt to change. I dislike change and cannot seem to accept it whenever it occurs. Therefore, without noticing it, my opinions on change essentially caused me to take interest in what stance each poem had on it. The carefully planted life-lessons in the poems and my subconscious attraction to change caused me to pick the poems I

Poetry is not something that I would normally be interested in. I’ve tried writing poetry only to end up a dismal failure. I’ve tried to read poetry only to end up bored halfway through. I’ve always wanted to be one of those soulful poetic types who walk around with a serene look on their faces, snapping their fingers when something tickles their fancy but I’ve never quite made that transition. Poetry, to me, seems to be a fanciful, ethereal pursuit that has somehow always gone over my head no matter how hard I’ve tried. Since I’ve failed miserably at being a poet or even enjoying poetry, you can imagine my surprise when I read “Dog’s Death” and not only enjoyed it but it touched my heart. A good poem knows how to grab not only the reader’s attention but will snag the reader’s emotions and take them on a roller coaster; whether it has a happy or a sad ending the poem should keep the reader’s interest until the end.…

One of my favorite poems is “poetry.” Poetry is a poem about poets using poetry to express themselves and not to impress anybody. She uses metaphors to show what poetry is, she says “A poem is pure energy.” These types of metaphors help the reader picture what the poems trying to say. She also uses personification to also have a better understanding.…

I hated poetry. I realize that sometimes people have difficulty verbalizing there feelings. That's perfectly fine. I realize that certain words can be symbolic. That's fine as well, however I didn't see the point in any poetry that didn't sound like it came from a Dr. Seuss book. How people were able to identify with certain poets and comprehend the deeper meanings behind their works was beyond me, but who was I to judge? Then one night I discovered a poem about hands, not how hands symbolize some greater meaning in life, just about hands. Hands and love. That night I learned to love poetry, learned to understand how it can convey feeling in ways the verbal descriptions can't. That somehow you can learn all of life's lessons from a…

There are an endless number of poems in the world today. Each of these poems can leave a lasting impression on a reader. Each reader may gain a different impression from the next reader. Two poems that have left an impression on me are “Harlem” by Langston Hughes and “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus. There are different key elements within in each poem that create the effect it can have on a reader. These key elements are imagery, figures of speech, symbolism, word choice, tone, theme, and sound.…

The Poems I’ve Chosen is Fire and ice by Robert frost and Part one life CXXXIII by Emily Dickenson the two poems are speaking of the destruction of the mind of a person as if the only blame for there problems is them selfs and there contanes got to them both. Now to begin what Mr. Frost is describing when he says “I hold those who favor fire but if it had to perish twice I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction of ice is also great and would suffice.” He’s saying he’s been through the destruction of fire before and between the choices of the two hells Fire of Ice either way it goes he’s been through the depths of hell so now he’s challenging the ice as if it’s a greater way of…

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…

The poems I selected were all about how I feel. I can relate to every single one of the poems I chose. The poem Springing shows that just because its rainy or hot, you always have something to do. The poem Spring Snow shows that at one point you might want the winter to come back, or just a change. The poem Birds Again shows that some people think differently about Spring, some people think it's black and groggy, but I disagree.…

I am glad to have my best friend in my life Brandon Wernig cause I have had friends that I thought I was getting to be very close with and then after some unfortunate coincidence they just stop talking or are upset about something that ruined that. and with boot camp I am going through some huge changes in my life I feel like the…

Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Two famous poets come to mind to anybody who has ever been in an English class, Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings. Both of these poets have had numerous famous pieces due to the fact that they both captivate the readers attention and can even keep them intrigued in a piece long after their first time reading it. A line such as one of the most memorable lines from Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (1). Many recognize this line and many may have their own opinions on how to look at his poem ‘The Road Not Taken’. Another poem with a shared theme is E.E. Cummings poem “Anyone lived in a pretty how town” these two poems are very different in delivery and literary devises, but both have a common theme, a theme of how time goes on and the choices one makes, shapes who they become. This reoccurring theme is important because live doesn’t stop going it is a clock that will never stop ticking and every time the clock ticks we make a choice that shapes who we are and who we will be in the future.…
