My Progress In My Writing
I feel that I have made a large amount of progress from the beginning of the year. I have been able to take information about what I have done wrong and turned it into strategies that make me a better writer and score better at the same time. Overall with the progress I have made I feel confident about my writing. This is because I have put effort into trying to improve skills that I lack in, take more time to read and pay attention to what we are reading in order to remember details about the book, and have taken more care in my writing compared to years past.
I also made progress with poem analysis. This can be seen in my Midterm Essay. This piece proves that I have made progress because when we first started the poetry section I struggled

This was the most challenging writing assessment because of some skills that I struggle with were put to the test while I was writing the essay. One skill was my time management, since I was given only one period to write this essay, which for me is a small amount of time, I had to speed through some sections and I was not able to finish the essay, leaving the introduction barebones and the conclusion not even started. Another skill which was minor was that I am a slow writer which does not aid in my time management problem. Finally, ideas on what I can write do not pop into my head fast so creating ideas and thinking of supporting details is hard for me to do on the spot, again this does not help my time management issue. However I feel that I have learned how to write a common assessment in a manner that I can get a good score but do not need to write as much, allowing myself to make up on the time lost and get a good essay written before the bell …show more content…
This was because this was the first essay I had written this school year, and while writing the essay it showed me I needed to work on a lot more than I had expected. One of the problems I ran into was that I was reading books to get them over with and not to remember what was in them. Since I read most books to get it over with, I struggled to remember details that impacted what I was trying to say the most. This caused me to lose points and have a very basic and general essay about the book I read. Also while I was getting to the end of the period for write the essay I realized that I was not going to finish, and that I needed to work on my time management, this shown by me not finishing my conclusion. All this together was reflected when I took a look at the grade when it was put into IC, and showed me that I had gotten a 73. It made me notice that I needed to work on some important skills that would benefit me later in the school year and that I still had a long way to

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

My first semester here at UIC I was obligated to take English 160. I can honestly say I thought I would be easily passing this course. I was used to the 5 paragraph essay in high school and assumed that things would be the same in college. After writing my first project for English 160 I felt invincible until I received my graded paper. I had no idea what I had done wrong because I had done so well in high school English. Finally I realized that I had to pick one theme for an entire paper and elaborate on it completely. Even though it took some time I felt…

The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 ruled that African-Americans, even ones who were not enslaved, were not protected under The Constitution and could never be citizens. This brings up questions that will be answered in this paper. Should slaves be American citizens? Is it morally correct for one to own another human? Does the Dred Scott decision contradict The Declaration of Independence which states that every man is created equal?…

Analyzing before this class was difficult for me to do and after seeing how important it is or necessary it is to have to make a stronger argument made me want to improve. After doing hours of research for every essay we had this semester made me comprehend why the prompt were questions I should have made for myself. How although many things in life can be subjective it does not affect the relevancy. One of my favorite things we did for this class was to read The Handmaid’s Tale, although many would disagree with me, it made me want to change my opinion on certain things. How frightening it must be ever live in a society like the one in the novel…

After reviewing my grade on The Bluest Eye essay, I can honestly say that I did a great job considering I got 83% on the previous essay. I was more prepared and I took my time to write it. Going over the notes on the book as well as doing a little bit of research gave me the information I needed to write my essay. I noticed that my writing has improved significantly compared to where I started at the beginning of the year. Things that teachers could do to help me have an easier time writing an essay is to not give work time in class. Honestly I will probably spend it playing computer games. While I could be doing a worksheet that shows me how to write better. Another thing that could help me is to make mini due dates. I like knowing that I am going at the right pace while I am writing. I also have a few recommendations for students who take this class next semester. The first and biggest one is to get done early. If you get done early you can spend class doing other homework or play games, without being stressed out about finishing your essay. Another tip is to use paper rater. You do a lot of writing in this class, and paper rater can make it so your essays don’t have errors without having to spend a lot of time looking for them. The last is write in the format that you are most comfortable in. I have always been taught to write in the 5 paragraph format, so I always use it if I can. I make me write my stories much faster. Knowing what other people do to pass a class can help you pass the class even if they are smarter than…

My work from the beginning of STEP to now has drastically changed especially in my writing. I never enjoyed writing essays because I did not do well with writing under pressure. After completing my essay, I felt confident about what I produced. However ,when my essay was handed back, it was noted that I lacked vocabulary, figurative language and my sentence structure was poor. After being in class, I have improved on my essay writing skills. I used more vocabulary terms than I usually would in my essays, had better sentence structure, and completed the entire essay with time to spare to check it over. In addition I learned that i have been using seven deadly writing sins in my writing. Continuously writing and having my peers edit my work helped me eliminated those sins from my writing. When school starts again, I will be prepared to write a timed essay with the new skills I have attained.…

Essay A, was a bit challenging for myself because I had to relate to the film to my personal experience. With the critiques I received from my first draft, it made me realize that my writing wasn’t as weak as I thought and that all I needed was practice. With your help and critique, I was able to edit my paper and summit my final draft confidently. When I received my grade with your feedback, I must say I was surprised. I wasn’t expecting to receive a A- for the paper; making me realize I do set myself short and that all I really do need is practice and I would be fine, just as you assured each and every student at the beginning of the course.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

I have learned about the different types of essays, such as: the remembering essay, the compare and contrast essay, the cause and effect essay, and the reflective essay. I have also learned different techniques to set up an essay. An outline is one of the most important and useful things I have learned this semester. It helps me organize my essays and it also makes it ten times easier to write the essays. Another important thing I have learned from this class is how to use MLA format. I think that I challenged myself to receive good grades, and that I have done so this semester. I am eager to find out new or different things that I have some knowledge about, but I was amazed at the things I thought were right with counseling issues that I was completely wrong about. I am sure that I still have a long way to go, and many new things to learn. I feel that I was entirely invested in this class and all the assignments that were given to me. I wasn’t late on any assignments and many times had the assignment finished before it was due. I read each chapter carefully and was interested in each new thing that I found. I always want to do my very best in each class that I take. I returned back to college when I was 40 years old. This was something that I had dreamed of for many years, but was afraid to try it. I thought that I wasn’t smart enough to go back to school. I am glad that I made this decision even if it was many years after I should have done it.…

Family is a universal concept: everywhere we go we see happy families with excessive members or even those excited "soon-to-be" families with a newborn on the way. But what if I were to tell you that in 2008, out of these "soon-to-be"mothers "eight percent...we're illegal aliens" (502)? Our founding fathers would encourage us to welcome these "aliens" as they had accepted those wanting to experience democracy and escape from tyrannical rule, however most U.S. "natives" nowadays would be anything but welcoming. As Americans, we pride ourselves on our democratic values such as equality for all citizens no matter what race or religion: like the song says, "this land is your land, this land is my land... This land was made for you and me!" Although, recently these American ideals have been struck down by activists who disagree completely. Our American value to accept all people should apply in all cases, including immigration.…
