My Progressive High School Education is essential to the progress of society. Every student should be given equal opportunities to learn. To do this a school must have an environment that will accommodate the needs of a diverse student body. Students should be active participants in their education.
The school I am creating is a high school. The demographics of my school is in an urban area. It consists of 60% African American, 20 % Latino, and 10% Caucasian students. Most of the students come from low income families. The school consists of advanced learners who have very high IQs. They do very well in all their academic subjects. “Progressivists believe that education should focus on the whole child, rather than on the content or the teacher”(Oregon State, 1999, para. 3).In this particular high school student interests will be assessed. This way students will be motivated to come to school. They will be more engaged and determined to do good in school.
Curriculum must be based on basic knowledge and prepare them for the advanced knowledge students will soon have to acquire. It is also important that the curriculum does not set students up for failure. A good curriculum will show all parts of society and the members who live within it. Educators should be aware of how culture affects curriculum. They should know how to amend the curriculum to fit the diversity of their diverse classroom. This will make students feel like they are respected members of society.
This school will utilize technology in their classrooms. It will prepare students to be tech savvy and to use technology to better present curriculum. Curriculum and technology correlate today in America’s school systems. Educators must produce curriculum that address the needs of students in an ever changing society. The technology of today is more advanced than ever. Technology is making our world more efficient in many ways. It is not surprising that technology is a part of the educational system.
