In the beginning of Benjamin’s letter he develops a choleric tone to ease himself onto the real concern of his topic. Benjamin uses pensive diction “inability”, “miraculous”, “freedom”, “tranquility”, and “merciful”. Benjamin emphasizes the how the slaves are unequal and viewed upon. He states “We hold these truths to be self-evident,…

The reason I was able to see the impact they had on our country is because John E. Ferling, the author, described the hardships and successes of each person in great detail starting from the very beginning and continuing on all the way to the very end of their lives. John E. Ferling approached this book with a higher opinion of Jefferson, but gained greater appreciation for Hamilton towards the end. I enjoyed learning more about the forming of our nation and the lives of some of our founding fathers. I am inclined to learn more about the characters in the book because the play, ‘Hamilton’ on Broadway is something I’ve wanted to see for a while. I’m interested to see how similar and accurate the play is compared to the book. This author’s writing style is something I enjoyed reading, but I don’t think reading another one of his books is something I’d take part in. My recommendation for this book would be to read it for school and other educational purposes, but only read it for pleasure if you thoroughly enjoy…
Wood presents important supporting evidence that Franklin is more complex than his stereotype. In his book, Wood follows two broad courses, from Franklin’s difficult progress from an English supporter, to becoming a more committed American. In chapter one, "Becoming a Gentlemen," Wood lists events chronologically that were a result of Franklin's…
This document proves that Benjamin Franklin was an activist to acquire rights for Indians and tried to convince other Europeans to consider the way of treating what they used to do to those Indians. He also mentioned to the unreasonable murders of the Indians which was done by the Europeans. Therefore, intended audience in the source was Europeans because Benjamin Franklin thought he could have told those people not to do murders in order to make the relationship between the Indians and the Europeans peaceful. That was also his purpose which is making the New World better. “The only Crime of these poor Wretches seems to have been, that they had a reddish brown Skin, and black Hair; and some People of that Sort, it seems, had murdered some of…
An example from the speech would be, “What must poor young Women do, whom Custom have forbid to solicit the Men, and who cannot force themselves upon Husbands, when the Laws take no Care to provide them any; and yet severely punish them if they do their Duty without them; the Duty of the first and great Command of Nature, and of Nature’s God, Increase and Multiply” (Franklin). Franklin is attempting to get the male readers to understand, and hopefully imagine what these women are put through. He hopes that if they hear or even see it for themselves, then maybe these men will come to their senses. However, Franklin is still quite humorous in this speech, for instance, the very last line in the speech “in my humble Opinion, instead of a Whipping, to have a Statue erected to my Memory” (Franklin). Franklin is trying to be humorous, but at the same time get a point across to the court officials.…
I believe that Samuel Adams and Thomas Hutchinson both used the idea of broadening their perspective. They both looked beyond that which was happening in their own life and in their own back yard and they looked to procure a betterment for all of the colonists. I also believed that they were individuals. They didn't conform to the ideas or notions of men before them. They set out to satisfy their own curiosities in life and to stand out from the rest of the crowd. They weren't satisfied in being like everyone else. I believe that they were able to look at themselves honestly and objectively, which is…
Benjamin Franklin played many roles rather than just being the president. He was well known in the eighteenth century, especially in the western world of the eighteenth century. At the time Benjamin Franklin was the center for everyone and there is no doubt he was a piviotal part of many people’s lives. Benjamin Franklin lived in heart’s of many for many reasons in particularly for his hard work in gaining independence for the United States. Franklin also had a hand in establishing the U.S. as a nation. He did this by forming the first public library. The author, Gordon Wood is trying to uphold all the characteristics of the American revolutionary characters and also how their individual role combined to make todays present United states. Washington is the only true typical hero we have ever had, who had a lifelong obsession with his reputation for impartiality. Hamilton argued for a society with wealthy classes, administrations in government, and strong banking. He wanted to be both the big-business man and big-government man, and while fighting for both, he became the man who made modern America. Aaron Burr, who was considered to have a bad personality with no principles other than self-interest, has become the model for the modern politician, who works for his friends and his own special interests. John Adams, a man of respectable character and high values, is shown as a man who lost his connection with the political world. The most interesting chapter was about Thomas Paine because he is rarely considered as one of the founders, though his writings were very important in the revolution. Paine was the first public scholar whose messages awakened not only the politicians but also the common people. Benjamin Franklin’s role as an example of hard work and self-reliance, as well as the selfless patriot, is a…
He also directly gave advice to his audience with his “Thirteen Names of Virtues.” These virtues are basic keys to living a good life. Not only did he present these virtues, but he also practiced them. By sharing this information, it leads the reader to believe that if they follow the same regime, they may also become successful as Benjamin…
This essay will not complete without knowing who is Benjamin Franklin really, Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston on January 17, 1706. He was the tenth son of soap maker, Josiah Franklin. Benjamin's mother was Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah. In all, Josiah would father 17 children. Josiah intended for Benjamin to enter into the clergy. However, Josiah could only afford to send his son to school for one year and clergymen needed years of schooling. But, as young Benjamin loved to read he had him apprenticed to his brother James, who was a printer. After helping James compose pamphlets and set type which was grueling work, 12-year-old Benjamin would sell their products in the streets. Franklin was elected to the Second Continental Congress…
The individual described in this writing is Benjamin Franklin. The basis for this paper is the cycle of Benjamin’s life, and the events that were significant for him throughout his years. Benjamin had a very large family; he began working at the age of twelve. During his young adult years, Benjamin chose to leave home and head for a bigger city. Throughout his young adult years Benjamin experienced some very significant events, while managing to attract all the ladies. During Benjamin’s later years, he spent most of his time abroad in France. Even after losing his wife, Benjamin still managed to have a flourishing love life. Eventually Benjamin Franklin’s life had to come to an end, however he still remains a large part of our history, even…
The first theme we are going to discuss is freedom. John Parker’s life includes many experiences that would influence his love and aspiration for freedom. At the young age of eight years old, he was sold and forced to walk from Norfolk, Virginia to Richmond, Virginia chained to an old man who would be whipped to death. “This experience set him on fire with hatred and desire to gain his freedom” (p.20). John Parker was owned by a doctor who had sons that would smuggle books to him. The doctor would also encourage Mr. Parker to learn the trade of iron molding. This situation would influence his aspiration for freedom because he had the ability to read and also knew the trade of iron molding and was fully aware of his potential as a free man. When John Parker finally did get his freedom, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where he would help others on their journey to…
John Smith and Benjamin Franklin were both remarkable men known for their writings and works. There are many similarities between these two men, such as they were both authors. There are also many differences. John Smith “served as a foot soldier for the English in the Scottish Lowlands” (pg.16) and he was also an adventurer. Benjamin Franklin was a “-scientist,inventor, educator, statesmen...and foremost a printer.” (pg.94). Here are some of the comparisons between Franklin and Smith.…
