My Scoliosis Research Paper
When writing my application, I wasn’t able to share my personal story of my scoliosis. Scoliosis is a curvature in the spine. I was diagnosed with this disease when I was twelve years old. The reason I this is important for you to know is because living with scoliosis can be a life-long struggle. It also makes your upper body, from the torso to the neck, take on a very odd shape. In my case, though not by much, my left side is bigger than my right. This happens because my spinal curve is pushing toward the left side. My ribs also stick out, but not to badly. This is because my upper body is shorter than it should be; therefore, everything is being crammed together. Most times after having the proper surgery, the spinal curve is corrected the upper body fills out like it should be, and even though the sides are uneven, you can barely be able to tell. …show more content…
In fact, I think I’m a stronger person because of it. Through this disease, I have become an overcomer. I’m an overcomer, because I live with pain that makes me want to scream at times. I have overcome challenges caused by the pain and nature of my scoliosis. I’ve spent hours doing therapy and weight lifting to help me gain a stronger back. I’ve had to teach myself how to have good posture. I’ve had to adjust my sleeping position at night so that I can sleep. But most importantly, I’m an encourager. My goal is to let people know that the pain can’t keep you from doing whatever you want. I have never let it stop me from pursuing my love of musical theatre. This is my world, and it’s extremely important to share it with

In her essay, "On Being a Cripple", Nancy Mairs reflects on her life as a "cripple" due to multiple sclerosis (MS). It is truly admirable how she is able to remain in such a positive attitude despite her unfortunate consequences. Instead of asking for people's sympathy, Mairs wanted herself to be identified as a cripple instead of a handicapped or disabled person. She even believed that her condition helped to enrich her life and define the person she is. It is truly remarkable how she can face such an event with so much courage and confidence. Her essay certainly teaches a lesson about how one should not feel sorry for his/her disadvantages, but rather live it to the fullest…

Mairs has many insightful comments to make about how disability does not fit well in our youth-oriented, physical-fitness-obsessed culture, and on how social expectations influence whether she adapts or fails to adapt. She also understands what is at stake for the medical professionals who care for her: "I may be frustrated, maddened, depressed by the incurability of my disease, but I am not diminished by it, and they…

Some of the complications that may occur after surgery is scarring. Scarring after a surgery procedure may affect ones decision to go through with the surgery. If a teen already feels uncomfortable with the natural look of her body, after scarring that will not change or worst case scenario, she may feel worse about her body and feel like she has to cover it up to camouflage it. Another con to surgery is obsession. After the satisfaction of having a successful surgery, a teen may feel like she must continue on with surgeries to begin a process of changing, altering or fixing any minor flaws in order to gain full satisfaction. Having multiple surgeries increases the risk or serious complications. It is possible to for someone to undergo too much surgery where they will eventually experience long term effects. In some cases, depending on the surgery being done, there are various complications for each procedure. For example, when it comes to surgeries like breast augmentations, most women have at least one serious complication within the first three years with complications including infection, painful hardening of the breast , scarring, loss of nipple sensation, etc. (Zuckerman, par.4) Death is one of the most severe outcomes of plastic surgery. Walking around school and doors slamming into my face because no one would open them. Going out to eat and everyone staring at the “cripple.” Being in a full leg brace with crutches was a challenge. The only good that came from it physically was my arms got a little bit stronger. Under my arms I developed awful rashes that burned me tremendously. Mentally, I became a better person in every way possible. I was a very reckless individual and I stopped at nothing. I'd jump off buildings into snowbanks and not think about the consequences if I got hurt. My first time getting hurt changed my views on everything. Before I do anything, I think about my knee. It taught me to appreciate my body and not to beat on it constantly. I also feel grateful that I do have a very healthy body. Although my knee does hurt all the time, I can still walk. Now when I see someone disabled in anyway, I do not stare. Instead I feel a sense of sympathy for them. I understand the everyday struggles they must go through that other people might not consider. Before my injury, I never realized the simple things in everyday life are the biggest challenges to…

The disability simulation that I choose to do was to rent a wheelchair from the mall and spend an hour navigating around the mall in the wheelchair. The reason that I choose this simulation is because I thought it would be a great idea for me to experience what obstacles the people who are in wheelchairs have to endure on a daily basis in simple day-to-day activities. There are many things that people without disabilities, more specifically in this simulation people not in wheelchairs, do every single day without even thinking that people who are in wheelchairs have to make modifications or work harder to do the same thing. I felt knowing what people in wheelchairs have to go through on a daily basis would help me setting up a classroom to make it wheelchair accessible if I ever had to. I would want to make sure a student in a wheelchair had the same opportunity to learn just as much as any other student.…
