Pertussis is a respiratory tract infection that is very contagious. It got its name because of the sharp high-pitched intake of air that makes a “whooping” sound that follows a fit of coughs. It was originally considered a childhood disease but now it affects those children that are too young to have completed vaccination and those who have slowly lost the immunity to it. This can cause death in infants, which is why pregnant women should be vaccinated against it. Whooping cough is caused by the bacteria called Bordetella pertussis. It produces many virulence factors including the pertussis toxin and since it can be transmitted through droplets, it can go from person to person making it highly contagious. When the infected person coughs or sneezes, the droplets in the air can be taken in by anyone nearby.…

My first encounter with this 21-year-old male’s case made me initially think “influenza”, but many diseases start with flu-like symptoms, for example, the quintessential sore throat and dry cough. The person of interest was probably thinking it is just a cold plus I have that exam to study for. As time went by the symptoms progressed, which finally forced him to visit the campus clinic. The 21-year-old male college student has now developed a productive cough, a headache, a runny nose, a fever, and general weakness all over his body. The thought of “it’s just a cold” turns out to be much greater than expected. The result is pneumonia.…

Urgent care settings are structured to take care of patients with an illness or injury that does not necessarily require a trip to the emergency department, but also can not wait until the next day. Also, urgent care settings provide patients with better access than primary care settings. Usually, urgent care facilities offer services seven days a week. Often, patients substitute urgent care clinics for an emergency care, which is a mistake. There are services that urgent care cannot provide. For example, conditions that are considered an emergency is…
To begin such an assignment the easiest and most practical way seemed to me is, to pick up a current problem. This also would have the benefit, if there are any changes indicated that such an assignment might help to improve quality and standards of nursing practice. The hospital wing currently faces multiple Staphylococcus infections of various severity and location. I tried now to investigate not so much how these infections occurred, rather more which factors are contributing and references back to…

Triage is defined as “the assignment of degrees of urgency to wounds or illnesses to decide the order of treatment of a large number of patients or casualties.” For doctors and nurses, triage comes down to their moral and religious beliefs until the U.S. decided to come up with triage classifications. However, even then it is difficult for them to categorize the patients from minimal (green) to presumed deceased (black). In order to look at a triage situation and be unbiased to the patients, you must be a benevolent and disinterested spectator.…
