Stands for Tolerance" was although many people disagreed with Johnson because he burned a flag, there was not a law stating that you may not burn a flag. In "American Flag Stands for Tolerance" the Supreme Court decided that "A person had a right to express disagreement with government policies by burning the American Flag. This represents Barbara Jordan's quote because although many people did not accept that Johnson burned a flag, "they must accept that the first amendment does not only protect expression when no one is offended." Therefore, we must accept that what Johnson did was not illegal; although, one may think differently.
Other than differing opinions and viewpoints, another example of Barbara Jordan’s quote “We, as human beings, must be able to accept people who are different than ourselves” ; would be differing cultures.
Differing cultures could be another extremity when it come to the topic of humans accepting each other. Cultural differences could lead to many problems between people because they may not agree with each other culture, religion , etc. an example of this would be in the video titled “My So-Called Enemy”. In this video there were many girls of many different backgrounds. Many of the countries that these girls came from had conflicts with each other making it hard for the girls to accept each other because as children they were taught to hate one another’s country and anyone involved in the country. Many of the girls felt this way because their family members had been killed or hurt in wars between the countries that these girls were from. The girls had to spend a few weeks together in the same house, despite their different cultures and their parents beliefs, the girls were able to play and communicate like children of the same culture (when it did not involve politics, religion, or facts about their
country).
Rather than different cultures among humans being a result in a case where humans may have to overcome differences in order to accept people who are different than them, tradition and beliefs may be Another example of Barbara Jordan’s quote “We, as human beings, must be able to accept people who are different than ourselves.” In the story titled “The Lottery” all of the villagers would have to attend an event called “The Lottery” once a month weather they wanted to or not. The villagers played the game because they considered it to be a tradition so they had to play whether they agreed with it on not. For example, when Tessie Hutchinson’s family name got drawn from the box she started screaming that “You didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn’t fair.” Although Mrs. Hutchison disagreed with the decision she had to continue playing despite what she thought because “the lottery” was considered a tradition in this village and within the villagers, she therefore, had to accept the fact that her family name and then her name was chosen.
