My Son The Fanatic
My Son the Fanatic
My Son the Fanatic is a short story. It starts ‘’in medias res’’ as you can see in the first lines in the story: ‘’surreptitiously the father began going into his son’s bedroom.’’There is also an open ending in the story. The author is Hanif Kureishi and the publication year is 1997.
The story is about a Pakistani father called Parvez and his Pakistani son called Ali. Ali is a very religious boy, and he didn’t do anything wrong compare to the religion. But the father sees himself as an English man, because that is where they live, so Parvez does not care to eat bacon as you can see on page 197 line 37: ‘’Parvez couldn’t deny that he loved crispy bacon smothered with mushrooms and mustard and sandwiched between slices of fried bread’’. That is the problem with Parvez and Ali, and then there are some problems with Parvez’s wife.
The story could take place today there is nothing that seems it should be from the old days. I think the story takes place in England, and I think it is not a little town in England. It doesn’t say where it is in the text but that is just what I thought it takes place as you can see at page 192, line 8
Parvez is a Muslim guy. He is not living by the Muslims religion. He is a taxi driver. Parvez is very curious about his son. He drinks a lot and that is against the Muslim religion. Had hopes for his son. So he eats bacon and pork and stuff like that if he wants, because he feels like he is a normal English man.
Ali is a Pakistani guy I think he is about 18 years old. He is also a Muslim. Ali is getting older, he is outgrowing from his teenage attitude. Ali care a lot about all the Muslim rules, so didn’t eat bacon and pork and stuff like that, because he feels like he is more a Muslim guy than an English guy.
The main theme in the short story could be immigrants. It could be that the author is trying to get us a having a look to come into a new land with a totally different religion that it is not that easy to do. We should also maybe be more hospitable to the immigrants if they think it is hard to come into a new land.
It could also be something with freedom to enjoy yourself while you can. That you should have fun when you are young and listening to yourself, if you want to eat bacon then you should just do what you self would like to. And you shall not listening to someone else you shall do what you think is best for you.
You can perspective My Son the Fanatic to another story we had read. The story East is East was also about some immigrants who came to England. The point is that it is pretty hard to live in another country where they have another religion.

The text emphasizes the hardships that immigrants often have to endure when going into a new country in the search of a better life or the American dream as many call it. The text potentially symbolizes America’s people as well as its culture because America has and is still today very diverse due to the wide variety of races, religions, and cultures that immigrants introduce when they come here. America can be seen as a melting pot because the different nationalities, cultures, and ethnicities of immigrants eventually “melt” together to create a common culture although several immigrants choose to retain their culture no matter what. The majority if not all immigrants leave behind everything they know and love to try and get a better life in a new country where there are more opportunities. America has always been a popular choice for immigrants as it has a plentiful of resources to offer such as employment, freedom of religion, and better education programs. Immigrants often choose to leave their home country because they have a family to sustain and their home country is simply not adequate for their necessities. In My Ántonia Willa Cather really focuses on the struggles that immigrants face upon arriving to their new country. People often think it is easy for immigrants to simply leave and go into other countries but Willa proves that it is quite the opposite. Immigrants do not immediately get a better life upon arriving to a new country which is depressing but it is the truth. Immigrants still have to face new problems that come with the change of countries. The problems that immigrants face in the new countries can sometimes be worse than the problems they faced at home which can be really discouraging. Willa Cather portrays the hardships that many immigrants struggle through the story of the Shimerdas, “tony was barefooted, and she shivered in her cotton dress and was…

Ali was given the name, Abir ul Islam, which stands for perfume of Islam to signify the standing he would have in the Islamic culture. His childhood seemed a very happy one…
