In his first year, Bush was confronted with the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. The Exxon Valdez oil spill happened on March 24th 1989 in Prince William Sound, Alaska. This was an incident out of President H.W Bush’s control, but obviously had a negative impact on the economy. In response to the oil spill, many “fisheries for salmon, herring, crab, shrimp, rockfish and sablefish were closed, with some shrimp and salmon commercial fisheries remaining closed through 1990” (Amadeo, 2009) This oil spill created a large decline in the commercial fishing industry, causing many people to go out of business. There were over two thousand Alaskan Native Americans and thirteen thousand other “subsistence permit holders” who lost the source of their food because of the accident (Amadeo, 2009). The tourism industry in the Alaskan area immediately lost over twenty six thousand jobs with more than $2.4 billion in sales loss (Amadeo, 2009).…

British Petroleum’s public image was damaged immensely by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and its poor public relations management during the weeks that followed. BP created the “Gulf of Mexico Restoration” website to inform the public about its efforts in cleaning up the spill and to help restore public trust in the company again. BP’s “Gulf of Mexico Restoration” website uses these three strategies to try to repair its reputation: a section highlighting technological advancements for safer drilling, colorful graphics of bolded statistics that state the amount of money BP has spent on various efforts, and a collection of videos that explain what BP has done to repair the Gulf of Mexico and the states affected.…
The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 was signed into law in August that year. It came about mostly because of the public response and concerns after the Exxon Valdez incident in which an oil tanker heading to port in Long Beach, CA ran aground in Prince Williams Sound, AK spilling up to an estimated 750,000 barrels of crude oil. Although ranking well down the list on the world’s largest oil spills for quantity dumped, the remote location of the spill made response and recovery extremely difficult. One of the key provisions of the OPA - §1002(a) Provides that the responsible party for a vessel or facility from which oil is discharged, or which poses a substantial threat of a discharge, is liable for: (1) certain specified damages resulting from the discharged oil; and (2) removal costs incurred in a…

The taxpayer filed a lawsuit to recovered damages for personal injuries sustained in a 2000 auto accident. In 2004, a jury awarded the taxpayer $1,600,000M in damages and also delay damages of $1,080,000, resulting in a total judgment of $2,700,000. The defendants appealed the award, however while the appeal was pending the parties reached a settlement, which provided for payment to the taxpayer in the amount of $2,550,000. In 2009 after attorney’s fees of $850k were deducted the taxpayer received $1,700,000.. The taxpayer wants to know how these amounts are treated for federal tax purposes.…
I am Casey John Phillip DeLaat, and major is education leadership. There has been many people that have influenced me throughout my life that has shaped my coming academically career. The person who has shaped me most is my mom she has always been there for me and encouraged my ideas and goals that I have come up with, and she has helped me get through some of the goals I have faced. Getting an education is important to me for numerous reasons, one of which is I’ll be the first one to go to college on my Father’s side of the family. I’ve also wanted to continue my education so I can provide education to students myself and show them that college is possible and reaching their goals is possible and can and will be achieved, if they put their…
The Oil Spill, due to the mismanaged oil drilling by British Petroleum (BP), in the Gulf of Mexico, has turned into one of the worst environmental disasters to happen to an ocean ecosystem of all time. Although many people only notice the effects on the hydrosphere, which include the oil going almost a mile deep under the sea, destroying the sediment and rock on the ocean floor, as well as disrupting coastal patterns, many have not realized the drastic effects on the biosphere because of this catastrophic event. The BP oil spill is viewed as the largest decimation of ocean wild life known to man, as well as also killing human lives in the process. Entire ecosystems have been affected in the process, harming animals like whales, dolphins, fish species, pelicans, seagulls, sea turtles, etc., several of which are already endangered. This destruction of wildlife has also lead to a slowdown in many fishing industries, further affecting human life, and causing severe poverty for those who rely on such business to survive. Even if some of the animals did survive, the trauma faced from this experience will lead to reproductive problems, or most likely, death. Even though life is returning back to the Gulf, the damage done can never be replaced, and the area will never be the same.…
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a novel that was published in 1960, the times where our nation had segregation and injustice amongst the colored and the whites. Racism presents itself in many ways in the town of Maycomb. Some are blatant and open, but others are more insidious. The plot focuses on a lawyer, Atticus Finch, and how he defends a colored man, Tom Robinson, who is wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. When they go to trial Tom is automatically a victim of injustice when they find him guilty of rape just because he is black (Normney 5). om Robinson’s trial, and in fact his entire life, was badly affected by racism. It is truly a testament to the corruption of society when a person who has earned a bad reputation is held in higher esteem than a person who was born with it, as is the case with Bob Ewell and Tom Robinson. Even though Tom was obviously honest in his testament, the jury sided with Bob Ewell because he was white. They made this decision despite the fact that the Ewell family was widely known to be a worthless part of society. Jem, not being racially prejudiced, could not understand this mentality. As Atticus pointed out, “If you (Jem) had been on the jury, son, and eleven other boys like you, Tom would be a free man.” (Lee 7).…

My 10th grade U.S. History class at Center Point High School was presented with the challenge of producing a digital family history project. The digital device could be anyone they choose. Any point-of-view was acceptable, as long as it was relevant to their family. The rationale of this assessment was to allow my students to explore their family history and develop and expand their use of digital technology in the educational process.…
The match that lit the fuse of the gigantic spill was a massive explosion on April 20th, 2010, on the Deepwater Horizon oil-drilling platform that killed eleven workers. The spill had already been going on for three months, gushing crude oil into the gulf, before it was finally capped on July 15th, 2010. Even after it had been capped for forty days, the people whose environment was directly affected had not yet been notified of any type of oil spill. An article by World Book confirms how the spill was started: “The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil-drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, kills eleven workers and creates the worst environmental disaster in US history. For nearly three months, as BP struggles to cap the leaking well, about 4.9 million barrels of oil gushes into the Gulf.” (World Book 2011) This explosion directly affected at least eleven families who lost loved ones at the beginning of an enormous environmental crisis…
The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico is vastly suggested to have a negative impact on fisheries. Joel Norman is a fisherman who receives all of his sea fish from the Gulf of Mexico. In the past 10 years of the dead zone growing larger the amount of sea fish his crew has caught has decreased by 78% (Dell'Amore, 2013). If the dead zone continues he will be out of business in less then a year. This will not just be an impact on a few fisherman industries but hundreds of fishermen will go out of business.…
America’s fishing and tourism industries are still feeling the effects of the BP oil spill. Due to the oil contamination of our sea life, it’s been very difficult for fishermen to find healthy, safe, seafood to bring to the stores, and eventually home to feed families. In an article by Maria Gallucci, the author interviewed a fisher/business owner by the name of Brian Harvey. Mr. Harvey explained that over 5 years following the Since the spillage, their “once-bustling marina has grown still after the flood of oil and clean-up efforts skilled off most of the oyster reefs.” The families that used to tour the area during vacations aren’t willing to go to a beach contaminated with oil, eat unsafe seafood, or fish in the dying or empty waters they used to enjoy. The fishing and tourism industry has dropped by at least 50%, and continues to fall. Harvey is just one of the thousands of workers affected by this one oil-spill (). The jobs created by the Oil Drilling industry doesn’t even make up for it. Many of the positions offered by this industry lack safety regulations. Oil rig workers spend an average of 12 hours a day working in dangerous conditions hundreds of miles away from emergency services. They live on these isolated oil rigs from a week to a month of time (Webley). Working with highly-combustible material like oil and gasolines, and heavy machinery that breaks often, it’s not surprising to hear that people die every year working in these conditions.…
When I heard about how my uncles mistreated you because of your father, I felt really irritated. How could they even think about tying you with wires and flogging you when you are their nephew? I wish I was the witness to tell the world they shouldn't mistreat you because of something you have never done before.I hate to know that you were in a hard time and nobody did anything although they knew about it. '' O Ned cried Hall we can't have this. I knew he was a liar and bent in every possible way, but when he said this I liked and trusted him." I had the feeling that I do not believe that Hall because why would he be the only person to believe you, but why did you trusted him either? He made you use an axe to hit Pat, that could have caused Pat to die and made you a criminal. It will…
