One of the benefits a person has and will utilize is making choices. As of today, to change your current Major the student fills out a change of major form and simply goes to admissions with their ID and their major is changed. For many students they will forget they will need to follow a new degree plan and transfer plan. I have changed my major 5 times in 6 semesters and at no time had an advisor contacted me asking me what degree plan am I following or what transfer plan.…
Academically, the school system has always provided me the tools so that I could learn, but outside the traditional high school classroom, there is a myriad of opportunities where knowledge can be obtained. The summer before my senior year in high school the opportunity to take classes at the University of Louisville was bequeathed upon me. My parents guided me into possibly taking core content material classes, for example, math or science. However, there was a wide range of classes in which I could partake in, but the ones which caught my attention were in the Sociology department. Although my parents were not thrilled with my decision of taking leisurely courses which were possibly not going to count towards my future major in college, I felt it was the intelligent decision.…
Well here we are, buckle up because this is going to be a long one. I have a lot of people to thank for getting me here and I probably won’t thank you all so I’m sorry if I forget. I don’t think theres anyone who is more important in my journey to Ithaca…
College majors are one of, if not the most important aspect of college. From young ages we are pressured to think about our future and the possible career paths we would take, leaving little room for our childhoods to simply be enjoyed. In high school, the AP classes we choose to take and the clubs we join should be reflective of the major we intend on having in college. However, with the increasing amount of unconventional careers being created and the necessity of bachelor’s degrees to get well paying jobs, there is more competition in the workforce, which leads college graduates to work in fields that are irrelevant to their major. Thus, the question is posed: Do college majors really matter? Some may say that majors are essential if students are going into specialized fields, while others say that if students are considering majoring in the liberal arts they aren’t. All things considered, college majors do not matter due to the fact that many college graduates end up employed in a field they did not study for, college students’ experience is more important than their major, and their network plays a bigger role in the field they pursue employment in.…
Intending to reflect on learning majors I am exploring at the University of Kansas, I am exploring a major among the KU School of Education, in Capitol Federal Hall-Sport Management. By exploring Sport Management, which is divided into 36 courses, I consider two of the courses to be quite riveting, with Introduction to Sport Management and Sport Ethics. Additionally, it feels quite appealing to me, being able to take Introduction to Sport Management, and possibly being able to take Sport Ethics. To have an opportunity to be able to learn more about the fundamentals of leadership and time management (Introduction to Sport Management), and understand the technology and decision making (Sport Ethics), is such…
Deciding what I want to do for the next 60 years of my life is a pretty big step, especially at the young age of eighteen. Making this decision involves choosing a school that is well suited for me, and picking a field to major in. Fortunately, I have half of the process figured out. I have chosen to attend Augustana University this upcoming fall (Go Vikings!), but am still undecided as to what my major will be. I have always been fascinated with science, which led me in the direction of a health related future. But narrowing it down to the perfect job, is deeming almost impossible. Because the Health Industry is growing at a rapid rate there are numerous employment options available,…
Upon entering college, I knew I wanted to work towards a career in medicine. However, I was unsure of which direction to follow and decided that obtaining a biology degree would be the correct path for me. I made academic success my top priority but also participated in many other extracurricular activities. These extracurricular…
This year, I am enrolled at Kauai Community College since the fall 2012 semester. When I started college, I was majoring Liberal Arts because I'm still undecided what career I wanted to pursue in. November 2012, after talking to my counselor I was able to choose what I'm pursuing; I choose medical assistant.…
Throughout my high school years, history has been a course that rarely captured my attention. Therefore, I want my university to have diversity within its curriculum. NYU offers me the chance to chose a history class that I enjoy. Focus my effort on satisfying my deep curiosity instead of merely getting a good grade because I need it. The uniqueness and variety of courses at New York University are impressive. Aside from the vibrant and beautiful location of New York University, these are the kind of opportunities that made me put my heart in this…
Near the end of Woody Allen's 1977 film Annie Hall, Diane Keaton's role as Annie says to Allen's character Alvy Singer, "You're just like New York City. You're an island!" However, the link between Alvy Singer and New York City is not simply a fictional creation. Nor is the connection between Allen's character Isaac Davis and New York in his 1979 film Manhattan fictional adoration. Woody Allen loves New York. It is through the various characters he portrays and through a camera lens that he shows New York in the most majestic and beautiful way that he can. However, both films do so in very different ways. In Woody Allen's Annie Hall and Manhattan, Allen uses the camera lens to convey how big and majestic the city can be. This is done in Annie Hall through various long-shots of the main characters or the exclusion of the main characters from the screen. Both films also use shots of New York and the lives within it to convey how the city never sleeps, and how it is always working similar to Allen's ideals of always busying himself. However, Annie Hall characterizes New York as an entity similar to Alvy Singer through a comparison between the setting, weather, and people of New York and Los Angeles. Manhattan also uses weather as a method of portraying the mood of the city and of Isaac Davis, but instead reflects more on powerful still-shots of New York's inner workings and skyline and dialogue through the voice of Isaac Davis off-screen.…
The College of Arts and Sciences at UPenn provide more than the immediate exquisite architecture and an inspiring atmosphere that molds a sense of belonging that is captured by an individual on his or her first moments in Pennsylvania. Beneath the sediments and moments of happiness and strife founds had to endure to establish such an institution, lies a foundation that dwells in the significance of academics and education. Learning is not a one-way street. America is a melting pot of a spectrum of backgrounds, experiences, priorities, and passions. I would engage academically at the University of Pennsylvania by advocating the cultivation and understanding of diversity. Of the four undergraduate schools, Arts and Sciences stands alone in being the most colored by covering a vast array of contrasting studies. It is captivating to bring the reasonings behind someone’s choice of major to surface. Education is the only life long friend to not stagger, dissipate, nor disappoint. She is the only peer that can bring the courage and adventure to create and understand beyond what is bedridden in the comfort zone. She is the only companion that guarantees opened doors. Not only as a student, but as a human being, exercising my right to think is vital to my existence. It makes me an individual while placing me suitably within a cultural group. I am who I am because of what I know. Diversity is the offspring of knowledge and I would be more than honored to share it with…
