my watch
My beautiful new watch had run eighteen months without losing or gaining, and without breaking any part of its machinery or stopping. I had come to believe it infallible in its judgments about the time of day, and to consider its constitution and its anatomy imperishable. But at last, one night, I let it run down. I grieved about it as if it were a recognized messenger and forerunner of calamity. But by and by I cheered up, set the watch by guess, and commanded my bodings and superstitions to depart. Next day I stepped into the chief jeweler's to set it by the exact time, and the head of the establishment took it out of my hand and proceeded to set it for me. Then he said, "She is four minutes slow – regulator wants pushing up." I tried to stop him – tried to make him understand that the watch kept perfect time. But no; all this human cabbage could see was that the watch was four minutes slow, and the regulator MUST be pushed up a little; and so, while I danced around him in anguish, and implored him to let the watch alone, he calmly and cruelly did the shameful deed. My watch began to gain. It gained faster and faster day by day. Within the week it sickened to a raging fever, and its pulse went up to a hundred and fifty in the shade. At the end of two months it had left all the timepieces of the town far in the rear, and was a fraction over thirteen days ahead of the almanac. It was away into November enjoying the snow, while the October leaves were still turning. It hurried up house rent, bills payable, and such things, in such a ruinous way that I could not abide it. I took it to the watchmaker to be regulated. He asked me if I had ever had it repaired. I said no, it had never needed any repairing. He looked a look of vicious happiness and eagerly pried the watch open, and then put a small dice box into his eye and peered into its machinery. He said it wanted cleaning and oiling, besides regulating – come in a week. After being cleaned and oiled, and regulated,

“Ugh! Get it together Sanger!” Rainsford slapped himself back to reality as he glanced at his mahogany, teakwood nightstand with a small digital alarm clock. The time read 4:30 a.m. as the faint sound of alarms blared from loudspeakers outside of the château. Groans from Cossack…

One hand of the broken clock stops at 12.00 while the dust buries the small one. I can hear the weeping and groaning come from everywhere while the smoke masks all the place. Many eyes capture a deeply gashed woman amid the wreckage stretches her hard to reach her daughter's hand, but she cannot. Only her eyes try to hug the girl, and wake her up. The little girl stained with red and her long dark hair closed her eyes. A Few minutes before, she was being with her white dress and holding a flowering Palm. Meanwhile, many people were singing the beautiful hymns and celebrating the Palm Sunday. "Again, do you believe what happened in the church? A man fit with an explosive vest donates himself, leaving 43 killed and hundreds wounded". It was the breaking news of another sad day. As we used to hear this news…

    Evening Hawk

Warren calls attention to the slow, grim passage of time with simile, suggesting that “history [drips] into darkness like a leaking pipe in the cellar.” Were there “no wind,” he says, we might be able to hear this terrible dripping away of time—this foreboding reminder of our own mortality, and imminent death. To complete this scene in which man is held in awe and fear at forces almost beyond his comprehension, he writes of a “steady” star, which “like Plato” rises great and almost impenetrably complex above the scene. Like the theories of a philosopher to the laymen, the forces behind the inevitable passage of time are incomprehensible to the mortal man. Warren’s use of simile emphasizes the terrible passage of time that becomes apparent during the visit of the evening hawk.…

What would you think if you came across a perfectly crafted watch in the middle of the dessert? Philosopher William Paley asked himself the same question and came to the elaborate conclusion of a teleological argument for the existence of an intelligent designer and the order of the universe. In his book, Natural Theology, Paley points out that the complexity of the randomly placed watch proves that there must exist a watch maker. He then makes the connection that the watch and its complexity are synonymous to the universe and it’s supposed design. By this opinion, he concludes that the watch is to a watchmaker as the universe is to a universe maker. Citing the similarities between the watch and the universe, Paley notes that, “Every indication of contrivance, every manifestation of design, which existed in the watch, exists in the works of nature; with the difference, on the side of nature, of being greater or more, and that in a degree which exceeds…

Kate Chopin is an American feminist fiction writer and a woman ahead of the time. Similar to the female characters in her stories, Chopin was an independent woman. She would often smoke cigarettes or walk in the streets unaccompanied; these practices were considered unusual for a nineteenth-century woman to do. “The Story of an Hour” is one of Chopin 's feministic short stories that focus on women and their views on marriage. It was published in 1894 and shows self-assertion when the protagonist, Louise Mallard, rejoices after hearing of her husband 's death. Kate Chopin, the author of “The Story of an Hour” uses symbols to expose her point about the control of women in a male-dominated society.…

To begin, time is used as a symbol for Peyton’s oncoming death. He knows that he does not have much time left, as demonstrated by the reaction he has to the ticking of his clock, “Its recurrence was regular, but as slow as the tolling of a death knell. He awaited each stroke with impatience and--he knew not why--apprehension” (Bierce). Peyton feels anxiety over the ticking of his clock because time is inching nearer and nearer along with his oncoming death. The watch can also represent Peyton’s distorted sense of time. “The intervals of silence grew progressively longer, the delays became maddening” (Bierce). The reader gets the idea of the slowing down of time. In reality, Farquhar’s death takes only a second, but his mind turns this one moment in time into an hours-long escape from death.…
