Last winter my wife and I went to Palm Beach, Florida. As soon as we got off the plane, we could feel the warmth on our faces. The average daytime temperature was 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The average temperature overnight was 60 degrees. The sun shone six out of the seven days we were there. We stayed at an oceanfront resort. In the afternoon we would go down and relax at the beach. Ten in the evening was a good time to relax at the pool. At that time, the crowds were gone, so we could take a private dip in the pool and hot tub. We enjoyed a few quiet evening dinners at one of the local ocean front seafood restaurants. And on Thursday night our resort held a poolside barbeque with live entertainment.
We also enjoyed going for morning and evening walks at the marina. We were able to look over the docks and see African Cichlids which were 10 times the size of the ones that I have in my aquarium. A lot of deep-sea fishing boats were docked, so it was interesting watching them come and go. There was also a nice seaside restaurant that served great seafood.
The scenery in Palm Beach is beautiful. From the Oceanside mansions with their tropical landscaped yards, to the entertainment district with its pastel colored buildings. Palm Beach is truly a great vacation spot.
One day we decided to be adventurous and took a five-hour drive down to the Florida Keys, which are a string of islands connected by bridges. We went as far south as Key West. Which is the southern most point in the United States, and only 90 miles north of Cuba. While driving down, we went over one bridge that was ten miles long. At one point all we could see while driving was water, as there was no land in site. Key West reminded me of a Caribbean island, as it has sugar white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue water. The beaches are the best I have seen in Florida. This is and island paradise with lush tropical vegetation everywhere the eye can see. For those who enjoy the nightlife there are a lot of fine restaurants and great places with live entertainment. There are also a lot of interesting spots to explore on the island. There are a variety of southern birds, reptiles and fish.
While traveling on the plane back home. I felt rejuvenated. Although, I was not looking forward to returning to winter, it was nice to have that short break. Being able to get away for a week breaks up the long winter and makes it a little more bearable. Now I can start planning for next year.

Several summers ago, shortly after I graduated 6th grade, my mother and I took the pilgrimage that all East Coasters with a week of free time and a fresh passport must take. By this, of course, I refer to seven days of good old fun-in-the-sun in a Caribbean resort. Like many other families, we had planned to go directly to the resort town of Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, until our flight back to New York departed a week later. And so it was, for several days at least. But lazy afternoons and evenings on the beach can become stale after a while. It was pleasant, for sure, but not stimulating. Punta Cana hadn’t captured my attention as the bright lights of Hong Kong or the ancient history of London had. There was no local flair, nothing…

(indent)Florida is known for its subtropical climate, but at night on the beach, the air becomes quite cool, like the sweltering air skated across ice before hitting your face. Temperatures are still very warm, yet the cool breeze off the coast can require you to need a light jacket at times, even in the peak of summer. It creates the most pleasing scene for strolling and losing your thoughts in the night.…

There is one restraints that you have to go to when you are there I mean they have unreal food. They have huge tacos filled with anything you want with beans, rice and a side salad. I can taste it now. I also remember the time I went with my grandparents to the beach after the sun went down with one of my uncles. We enjoyed the atlantic ocean, the warm white sand, and the scorching hot sun. We could hear the huge waves crashing into the sandy shore. We could also hear the lively chatter of the people on the beach. The smell of the salty ocean and the banana boat sunscreen overtook the air with mass quantities of the two smells combined. The touch of the hot sand on your feet and the rough seashells on shore. The best part of the day was when me and my brother went kayaking for an hour out into the deep blue sea. It took fifteen long minutes to fight our way over the…

It has been warm outside my whole life. I have only seen snow twice. Growing up in central Texas doesn’t mean I ride a horse to school, or dress exclusively in boots and a cowboy hat. It does, however entail long stifling days and only slightly cooler nights. I don’t know what cold really is. The lowest temperatures I’ve ever experienced were in the high 20’s. I’ve always longed for a change of scenery, desired the exposure to a different environment, both physically and socially. I got a taste of that a few years ago when I travelled to West Virginia to visit family where people are different and places actually have seasons. Not just sweltering hot in the summer and slightly cooler in the winter. I love the southern charm of my native Texas, but when that’s all you’ve ever known, you can’t help but feel a bit inexperienced.…
