Myiasis is an infectious skin disease that caused by some insects, which are the larvae or maggots. The word myiasis is derived from the Greek word "Maya " mean fly, and "asis" meaning disease. [1] It is also called Blowfly strike, Flyblown, or Maggot infestation.[2] The dipterous larvae is feeding on the host dead or living tissues, liquid body substances or ingested food.[3] Myiasis is a skin disease that may infect people in any age, country, or society. It has many types that differ from person to person or condition to condition according to which region or body part that it infects.
Myiasis can affect an individual of any age, race, society, or gender. People can affect by it from doing some bad habits or because poor personal hygiene, for example a 42 year old homeless female patient has myiasis in her genital area due to her homeless state, lack of medical care, and poor hygiene. Myiasis is classified into many types of the cutaneous myiasis. The three main types of the cutaneous myiasis are wound myiasis, furuncular myiasis which start when the larva remains in a single spot that causing a boil-like lesion, and the creeping myiasis which start when the larva burrows inside the skin.[4] The nosopharyngeal myiasis which infect the nose, pharynx, and sinuses. The opthalmomyiasis which involved the eyes, periorbital tissues, and the orbits. The intestinal, gastric, and rectal myiasis where some parts of the digestive system are infected. Urogenital myiasis involves the urogenital system which is the urinary and the genital system. Auricular Myiasis which infected the ear. Finally, Hematophagus Myiasis which very rare disease commonly affected the infants younger than 9 months who are live in rural or endemic areas, where the furuncular lesions occurs on the face.
