Myop's Coming Of Age
Going on a journey alone is important in the process of coming of age because doing so allows the person to adapt, change, and mature. The story “The Flowers” by Alice Walker and the poem “Birches” have a very good portrait of a person going on a journey alone and experiencing this. The protagonist of “The Flowers”Myop, usually walked through the woods with her mom but as seen here she isn’t, “Today she made her own path”. While alone on this walk she finds something that changes her in many ways and is the main instigator of her coming of age. On this walk, she finds the remains of a dead black man and there are many metaphors in the story of Myop losing her innocence and her coming of age, an example of this is “Myop laid her flowers” and …show more content…
During his walk he imagines a child climbing the trees and then weighing down the branches to go to the ground. He did this as a kid and longs to “climb trees again”(go back to a time without the responsibility of adult life), but he is “trapped” in adulthood. However, he realizes from later thinking that his adult life isn’t a trap as his young imagination and his youthful memories can “free” him.” so was I once a swinger of birches\And so I dream of going back to be.” This shows how he longs to return to his childhood or at the least, his younger times.“I’d like to get away from earth awhile\And then come back to it and begin over.” This shows how he views a return to his younger years as a form of vacation from his adult life. The text reads, “May no fate willfully misunderstand me\And half grant what I wish and snatch me away\Not to return. Earth’s the right place for love.\I don’t know where it’s likely to go better.” This shows his realization of that life on Earth, whether it be young or old, is a better life than the other options and he realizes that his love of life can be enjoyed even now as an older

As a teenager living in an ever-changing society, a journey is bound to happen either emotionally, physically or mentally. At any point in a persons lifetime, one may go through a journey- whether that journey takes place at a certain time or place, stemmed from a decision or the journey of ones existing lifetime. No matter what or whom, journeys are bound to change us and are inevitable. They offer us development and growth as individuals as well as altering the way we think, act or talk. This can be obtained through overcoming obstacles, achieving goals, anything really that ee encounter during a journey. We often register change as something dangerous, yet we still try our futile attempts at resisting change but at the end of it all, you yourself as a human being would have changed in either a positive or negative way. Bruce Dawe's poems, "drifters" and "migrants" emphasis on the emotional aspect of physical journeys where it is tied to the attitudes towards journey (s), the compassion in the journey, overcoming obstacles and fulfilling the desire of destination. Bruce Dawe uses language techniques such as imagery, colloquialism, tone and repetition to convey and highlight some specific aspects of physical journey(s).…

He talks about how he was fascinated as a kid by the brilliance of nature. He remembers almost every detail: the sound of the “mountain springs,” “this dark sycamore,” and the “hedge rows.” He mentions how he would always reminisce about his experience, which would help keep him keep sane. When he’s there, he’s thinking about his perception of it in the past, and the way he will reminisce about this experience in the future. His perspective on nature changed. Now, he is not only fascinated by its beauty, rather looks at it in a more detailed form, understanding its place in the world as well as how everything in the world is connected with one another. As he grew older he became more mature and wise, which allowed him to see things differently and have a much more deeper understanding of life in connection with…

The multifaceted and enigmatic nature of a journey can amend and enhance an individual’s perceptions of themselves and the world around them. It is through the process of journey that ultimately evokes the change and growth within an individual. This is illustrated in Barn Owl and Mother Who Gave Me Life by Gwen Harwood and The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, through the notions of maturity, regret, and the impact of journeys on the human condition. The extent to which these themes apply is varying to the respective context of the texts. By amalgamating these concepts the authors are able to concoct a universal idea that journeys involve change of some sort whether it be constructive or adverse. The authors have successfully explored these…

The final paragraph, billy wrote that his character has finally come to the acceptance that there is no going back to his childhood. It seems to make the reader reflect on the previous events in their early years. It seems to prove that you don’t truly know what you have until its gone, which shows sort of a mature ironic tone. I felt this way because no child thinks this way, only one who has experienced these events and has had time to reflect upon them can feel this way. A child never thinks his imagination will leave him or expect that his toys will become mementos of his early years. Collins seems to be trying to say with this poem that it is hard leaving the childhood behind and starting to mature. However since he was not turning ten years old as he was…

It’s your last couple of years to be truly a kid. Once you're 18 you are seen as an adult and you are one legally being seventeen. Each poem describes what it is like to be seventeen. At seventeen a person gains more responsibility but still has a lot of freedoms, they are still young enough to have big dreams and admirations. The adult world has not changed them yet, there is still a sense of innocence that remains within them. They have not become jaded. They still have time to go on adventures, see the world, to live life to the fullest, and to just be a kid before they have to settle down. Both the songs and poems emphasize that kids who treat this age shouldn’t try and hurry to be an adult. Their time will come. They should appreciate the time they have to be a kid, and use this time to learn about the world and themselves.Time flies and if they don’t take advantage of their youth, they may regret in the future. People always wish they could go back to this time of their lives, to be a carefree youth again, so it’s important for 16 and 17 year olds to realize how fortunate they are to still have the rest of their lives to look forward to. They should live in the now instead of racing towards the future because they will never get this time…

This represents the lost in the poem and what people are subconsciously thinking everyday. Lines 1 and 2 epitomize this meaning because it says, "Even when I forget you I go on looking for you." This leads on to how life is symbolized in the poem as well. People go their whole lives not realizing they are lost and need time to themselves to become the person they have the potential to be. Some follow behind others and are just a copy of the person next to them, in effect they are not their own person and the things they do are not of their true choice. This symbolism is conveyed in the last two lines as it says, "What they say you who are not lost when I do not find you." In conclusion you are not truly living life if you are not living as yourself and as the…
