Greek mythology is an exciting topic to learn in high school, it gives reader magical characters and personalities to learn about in many ways. Characters like Poseidon the god of the sea, Calypso the goddess- nymph of Ogygia, and Tiresias a blind prophet who gave advice. Poseidon, Calypso, and Tiresias are important aspects of greek mythology and culture because of the significant roles they play in greek culture and works such as The Odyssey.
Poseidon, the king of the Aegean sea, earthquakes, floods, and horses, associated with the trident symbol (Atsma), was very similar to his brother Zeus in exerting his powers on women and objectifying masculinity. Not only was Poseidon married to Amphitrite, but also they had a son Triton. Furthermore, one of the most notorious love affairs of Poseidon involves his sister, Demeter (Encyclopedia Mythica). Poseidon created the first horse to impress his mistress Demeter. Though they had the same mother (Rhea) and father (Cronus), Poseidon remained involved with Demeter. Calypso was so inlove with King Odysseus, that she had taking him as her lover and promising him immortality, if he would stay with her for the rest of his life.
