Mythical Creatures
Bungisngis is a one-eyed giant that is found in Philippine folklore. This giant lives in Meluz,Orion,Bataan. Bungisngis is described as a one eyed giant who is always laughing.[1] The literal meaning of the name Bungingis is derived from the Tagalog word ngisi which means "to giggle".[2]
The Bungisngis has a humanoid shape. It has large teeth which are always showing, and its upper lip covers its face when it is thrown back. Two long tusks project from the side of its mouth. The giant only has one eye, which is found in the middle of its forehead,[1] but this is compensated by its strong sense of hearing. It has also displays unusual strength. In the Filipino tale "The Three Friends - The Monkey, The Dog and The Carabao, The giant is able to lift the carabao and throw it with such force that it ends knee-deep in the ground.[3] However, despite its strength, the bungisngis is easily outwitted and quickly panics.[4][5] In the tale of the Three Friends, Monkey's tricks led him to his death.[3]
Duwende are goblins, hobgoblins, elves or dwarfs (Spanish: duende "golbin, elf, charm" < "duen de (casa)", owner of the house). They are little creatures who can provide good fortune or bad fate to humans.[1] In the Philippines, duwendes frequently live in houses, in trees, underground, termite like mound or hill, and in rural areas. They are known to be either good or mischievous, depending on how homeowners treat them. They usually come out at 12 noon for an hour and during the night. Filipinos always mutter words ("tabi-tabi po" or "bari-bari apo ma ka ilabas kami apo") asking them to excuse themselves for bothering the Duwendes. Filipinos would leave food on the floor, so that the duwende residing (or guarding) the house would not be angry with them. They also take your things, and laugh at you when you try to find it.They give it back when they feel like it,or when you tell them to please give it back.

Quentin Blake’s illustration of the BFG shows the image of a tiny girl standing on the palm of a very large man. The girl, dressed in a pink nighty, is reaching with outstretched arms towards the giant, although wanting to embrace him. The ‘giant’ appears to be quite old, black fine lines are drawn on his face to give the impression of wrinkles. His ears are disproportionate to the rest of his body, possibly being larger than the giants head itself. The tonal values in the illustration are very soft, suggesting the use of water colours, details have been gone over with waterproof black ink and a lot of scruffy looking dip pens (Blake, 2008).…

Myths and Legends that are retold by Beah in a long way gone served an important part in a village’s culture and lifestyle. Being told from mouth to mouth for generations, these stories played a key role in ceremonies that helped teach children about morals and explain the world they live in. When Beah is with his group of friends Musa decides to pass the time by telling a common story and asks them to listen, “My mother told me that whenever a story is told, it is worth listening to”(pg.74), he then begins to tell the story of Bra Spider. This story is about a spider that wanted to participate in all the feasts. So the spider began to create a plan. He gave ropes to all the chiefs of the village and asked them to pull on the ends when their feast was about to begin. On the day of the feasts Bra Spider secured the ropes to his waist. Unfortunately, for Bra Spider, all the feasts began at the same time. So when the food was ready the chiefs began to pull and poor Bra Spider was pulled from all directions. This tale serves as an origin story to how the spider got its small waistline. At that time, these kinds of tales served as an explanation in villages to explain the world around them. Another one of the myths that touches upon morals is the story of the hunter and the monkey. In this particular story there is a hunter who is hunting a monkey and confronts the animal. The monkey speaks and tells him that if the hunter lets him go his father will die but if he shoots his mother will die. This story was told to the children in the village every year. In addition they were asked if they were in the hunter’s position what would they do? With the story lingering in their mind, it brings the kids together and closer when answering the question. Certainly, Myths and Legends are indeed a part of culture and serves to teach us no matter the age.…

This piece was crafted right around the time of a Spanish invasion, so war is not a far-off assumption of what the painting represents. To start, the giant in the background is naked, giving off a barbaric feel. He also has his fists clenched, ready for battle or protection. It is assumed that the giant is protecting the people from whatever is to come. Whether it be war, or some other harmful force, is not known. Also, the giant figure is facing away from the panic in the foreground, confirming that the people are not running from him. The clenched fists could also be a symbol for power, as he is already oversized. However, whether he is standing behind a mountain or is buried up to his knees is not obvious. This means he is trapped, or is the last line of defense. One can tell by the scene that the travelers are instantaneously terrified by the beast's presence. Although, the beast doesn't notice or care about the people, thus turning his back on them. This does not necessarily mean that the people are running from him.…

All monsters have that one thing that sets them apart from the rest whether it’s the notorious big foot and his big foot, Michael Myers and his huge kitchen knife, or even werewolves and the fact that they transform when a full moon is out. Every monster is unique and different, but in the book Monsters there are seven theses and one thesis stood out. Theses number six in the book Monsters states that “Fear of the monster is really a kind of desire.” That thesis is true when it comes to a certain fictional monster by the name of Freddy Krueger.…

Although separated by the wide gulf of time and culture, myths involving supernatural characters and gods exist in almost every society throughout the world. While this commonality may not be spectacular by itself, a detailed comparative study of the myths reveals a more striking similarity. Even in cultures as different and antagonistic as those of the Ancient Greeks and the Sumerians, predecessors of the Persians, there exists a startling parallelism in imagery and themes of the myths of the respective peoples. The epics of Heracles and Gilgamesh are an exceptionally good example of these similarities.…

Megafauna are a number of large animal species that roamed the earth. They are often defined as species with bodies greater than 30kg, or equal to or greater than 30% greater body mass to their closest living relatives.
