From the New Trier High School Post-High School Counseling Office
For Members of the 2015 Graduating Class
June, 2014
Welcome to summer vacation! While we here in the post-high school counseling office are big believers in taking a break from your busy school-year schedules, we still have things for you to accomplish, however, so after a break and before you get too comfortable….
Plan to attend one of the free essay and common application seminars.
Details are in last month’s newsletter (under “Messages” in your Naviance account) and on the
NT PHS webpage).
Continue to research your options.
Use the Fiske Guide and the Yale Daily News Insiders’ Guide to try to assess the personal fit for you and your prospective colleges. Treat these guides as workbooks: using two different colored markers, highlight what you like in one shade and what you dislike in another. Use post-it notes to find colleges that stand out in one way or another.
The next way to continue your research is to go online and, conscious of the limitations of webpages, check into quantitative information important to you. Maybe you want to learn about the biology major, or about the psychology or engineering or interior design programs.
Maybe you want to find out how many soccer players are going to graduate and leave spaces in a college program.
Take notes to bring back to your post-high school counselor so you can further refine your list.
Here is where you can find some important information:
The New Trier post-high school website has a list of colleges that superscore and a list of the 62 colleges that require two teacher recommendations.
