NA Argumentative Analysis
The topic of gun control is hotly debated today. 50 % of the population are for it, believing that having a gun provides them with protection. Because of various reasons the government aren’t able to protect us, which is why people look for other ways to stay safe. However a gun is still a weapon. Despite the fact that people want to have to be on the safe side there were many accidents were an innocent people end up hurt unintentionally. Since Obama took office in 2008 there’s been about 23 mass shootings (Grider, 2015), 62 shootings at schools, 12,223 people killed in gun incidents and 24, 722 people injured(Gunter, 2015). There’s been shootings in Washington D.C, North Carolina, California, etc. Some might ask well what has Obama done since the beginning of these mass shootings? President Obama has made 15 statements on gun control since he's been in office (Gunter, 2015). What impacts has the statements had on society? The statements by the president has had no impact on society because time after time he’s being opposed by people of the opposite party who are in office. Two United States Senators, Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia and Pat Toomey, a Republican from Pennsylvania both gun owners with “A” grades from the NRA(Remarks by the president on common-sense gun safety reform, 2016) are two of many people who oppose Obama's statements on gun control.
The National Rifle Association established in 1871 with more than 5 million members, upholds the 2nd amendment and advocates enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crimes ( Statement on president Obama proposed executive nations on gun control, 2016). The NRA is a big reason senators like Manchin and Toomey oppose the president's statements. This is because the NRA goes to great lengths and spends huge amounts of money to defend the right to bear arms.
Since 1990 the NRA has spent over 22 million dollars on campaign contributions, over 40 million on lobbying since 1998,
