NASA Earth Observing System
The MODIS is the primary instrument in the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra and Aqua satellites, which were launched in December 1999 and May 2002 respectively, for the purpose of monitoring the seasonality of global terrestrial vegetation. MODIS is a multi-spectral sensor with 36 discrete spectral bands ranging from visible, near infrared, to thermal infrared, which has been extensively used for land, ocean and atmosphere research. The equatorial crossing time for Terra and Aqua satellites are 10:30 a.m. (descending) and 1:30 p.m. (ascending), respectively. In this research, daytime overpass for Terra in descending node is used to collect MODIS ST and NDVI data. Since in this research we aim to implement the proposed downscaling algorithm

In general, the map that contained all the earthquake distributions mostly had shallow quakes spread around. Deep quakes on the map were a lot less common. I would estimate that about 85%-90% of the earthquakes were shallow quakes. There were only three earthquakes on the map that had a magnitude of 7.0 or greater. The earthquakes that appeared to have occurred along spreading zones made up about 80% of the earthquakes on the map. Earthquakes that have occurred in these areas generally have ocean ridges. The other areas where earthquakes happen are on subduction zones where there usually are ocean trenches and oceanic mountain ranges. About 13% of the earthquakes on the map occurred along subduction zones. Out of all of the earthquakes on the map, I would say that about twenty of the quakes do not appear to be associated with any active plate boundary. The most powerful earthquakes that were plotted on the map occurred along subduction zones. The deepest earthquakes on the map also occurred along subduction zones. The geological factors that might explain the different levels of earthquake activity seen in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean basins is that in the Atlantic Ocean basin, there is a divergent spreading zone. On the other hand, the Pacific Ocean basin is on a subduction zone. Overall in the three-week period, the population centers that experienced the largest numbers of earthquakes were East India and Indonesia. The earthquakes that occurred in India and Indonesia were very well reported in the news because it caused deaths of more than 100,000 people and billions of dollars worth of…

Sometimes lack of competition gives a false sensation of security. I think this may be the problem that TerraCog faced. TerraCog had been the very top GPS manufacturer ahead of any other competitor and this made them very confident of their position in this rapidly growing field of technology though they had plans and projects of their own. When a new competitor appeared they couldn't realize the threat imposed on their market lead and the new situation that needed to deal with, hence review their current plans. Even when their Marketing managers told them that they are starting to lose market shares to their competitor, they just deluded themselves that it was just the holiday season and that their competitor wouldn't last. They even couldn't see that their competitors wouldn't easily abandon the lead it achieved. After lingering for a precious time in denial they were awaken very late by the fact that they are losing unless they can cope with the new technology introduced and even that they are having other competitor (Garmin) who was able to adopt this technology in more feasible way than they do.…

    1. The large mainstream environmentalism groups started to compromise too much with regulatory agencies and bureaus, starting with the Glen Canyon Dam project. This began an estrangement with the mainstreams that culminated in the rise of more militant groups like Earth First! Glen Canyon represented what was fundamentally wrong with the country's conservation policies: arrogant government officials motivated by a quasireligious zeal to industrialize the natural world, and a diffident bureaucratic leadership in the mainstream environmental organizations that more or less willingly collaborated in this process.

The mainstream environmental groups and government held the premise that mankind should control and manage the natural world.…

Christopher Columbus theorised that the earth was flat. We later found out that the earth was actually spherical, this was due to significant advancement of astronomy. Such important discoveries, wouldn’t be possible without, NASA, space exploration, advances in technology, scientific findings and a more broadened knowledge of the universe. The illusive idea of travelling beyond our clouds has been around before the first moon landing took place. We know that it is relatively important to explore space because some resources on earth will; soon run out and we may have to rely elsewhere for iron, steel, minerals and other such important products, we humans depend on. Despite the fact space travel is expensive, NASA should continue to be funded to learn about the universe and the world we all live in. Also funding NASA means a boost in technology for the economy and perhaps a dramatic change in restoring the environments function by solar panels and natural substances outside our atmosphere.…

Hubble Space Telescope may be awesome but these new radio telescopes in Atacama Desert, Chile may be more awesome. Built in the driest place in the Earth, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array or ALMA provides the most distinct and the most precise images of local stars and planet formation and can also distinguish the birth of neighboring stars and some of the most distant, ancient galaxies. ALMA was initially a 50-50 partnership between the United States National Radio Astronomy Observatory and European Southern Observatory (ESO). The array has been extended with the help of the new Japanese, Taiwanese, and Chilean partners. ALMA is the largest and most expensive ground-based astronomical project costing about 1.5 billion US Dollars. Its official inauguration was last March 13, 2013.…

We should all be doing our part. This world we live in is in a downward spiral and a change has got to be made. Michael Reynolds is an architect who is trying to make a difference in the world we live in today. He sees the problems we face and has continually managed to create alternative styles of living to better the situations at hand. What is an Earthship you might ask? Well if asked by the creator himself he would define it as, “Independent vessels to sail on the seas of tomorrow.” (Rose, 2004) That may seem quite crazy to most but Reynolds is thinking out of the box and ahead of this time. An Earthship is a self sufficient home in that it requires the use of no utilities. Heated by the sun and using solar and wind power this snug little home has caught the attention of many who struggle in today’s world of high energy costs. Reynolds feels that people should not be homeless as they could live on a small amount of money, if off the grid and relying on the resources the earth has to provide. The primary reason for Reynolds was seeing the unused resources filling the land fills. Reynolds saw this as building material. These Earthships are created completely from recycled resources such as tires and aluminum cans and glass bottles. “Packed with earth, stacked like bricks and plastered over, tires make the perfect building material, says Reynolds.” (Rose) To maintain the naturalism in the home Earthships are built half buried in the earth and half out. The excavated dirt comes to the roof on the northern side of the home. Reynolds states that, “What we are trying to do with these Earthships is make a way for human life to live as intelligently as plant and animal life.” (Knipe, 1991)…

Thailand Earth Observation System (THEOS) Development Program was begun in July 2004. The program is developed by Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Public Organization) (GISTDA) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, with European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company – Astrium (EADS Astrium SAS), in France, as a prime contractor. It consists of design, development, test, launch, and commissioning phases of THEOS satellite, as well as integration with associated control and data exploitation ground facilities. This paper gives an overview of system architecture, satellite architecture, its performance and main applications, as well as technology transfer and trainings for Thai engineers and operators. THEOS satellite is a compact and agile satellite with a mass of 750 kilograms and a power consumption of 800 Watts. It has two push-broom scanning optical instruments, providing worldwide imagery in Panchromatic and Multispectral modes, covering the Visible and Near Infrared spectrum. The Panchromatic instrument has a resolution of 2 metres and a swath width of 22 kilometres. The Multispectral instrument has a resolution of 15 metres and a swath width of 90 kilometres. The satellite will be launched into a sun-synchronous low earth orbit in July 2007 and will have a design lifetime of at least 5 years. 1. Introduction After many years of using remote-sensing data from foreign satellite systems, Thailand has decided to have its own earth observation satellite system for rapid and sustainable country development. Thailand Earth Observation System (THEOS) Development Program was then…
