NICU Reflection
I have attached the documents that you sent me filled out. The dates that work best for me are January 4th and January 12th. Although I am pretty flexible regarding the dates.

I was wondering if it would be possible to see the NICU one day and PICU/ED another day. I am flexible with this part as well.

I look forward to this shadowing opportunity, each time I have came I have learned so much.

Thank you,

In a time of uncertainty, once again Jeanette Zaichkin is there for parents of a premature or sick baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). For many parents, especially those of the smallest preemies, their time in the NICU is a roller coaster of worry over their baby’s health and development. These tiny and sick babies often need life saving technology to save their lives, yet this technology often makes parents feel less connected to their baby. Jeanette’s book gives parents the tools to become better informed during this scary time and therefore allows the parents to be able to ask thoughtful questions, worry less, an be move involved with the care of their baby in the NICU. The book untangles medical terminology and hospital…

Neonatologist take care of new born babies. Such as premature, ill or seriously ill new born that would be in the NICU. They are “masters or [doctorally] prepared advanced practice nurse who provides advanced nursing care to neonates up to two years of age in a variety of clinical settings” ("Neonatal Nurse Practitioner."). There are many different levels in the neonatal field such as level one being just taking care of healthy infants. These days now it has started to decrease because if they are healthy they are more likely to be in the room with their mothers. Level two on the other hand the nurses are having to be more in demand because at this level they are dealing with premature and sick babies and they need more attention. Lastly level…

NICU nursing was Formed at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1960. A NICU nurse is a neonatal intensive care nurse. As a NICU nurse you are responsible for total care of infants who may be diagnosed with congenital defects, delivery complications, or most often premature. If you love helping, and love little kids that are completely dependant on you. This is why NICU nursing is for y’all. Because, there are little babies calling for y’all. They need you to breathe and do any human thing, that we take for granted. Because they can't even take a breathe without you're help of running the breathing machine.…

    NICU Cuddlers

Twenty-three to thirty-four weeks is a small amount of time in order to develop into a fully functioning human being. When these small patients are born into this world they are most likely rushed into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where they address their short development time as well as any underlying medical problems, whether they be associated with their development or not. These patients are our smallest and most fragile, but also some of our loneliest. Many times nursing units within hospitals are understaffed and the nurses simply do not have time to spend just holding or speaking softly to an infant going through treatment. This is where "NICU Cuddlers" come into play. These volunteer groups are starting to crop up in hospitals around…

    Examination of the Newborn

The purpose of this assignment is to explore the issue surrounding screening and examination of the new born from birth. The article will look at why we perform this examination following birth and will pay particular attention to the examination of the eye. It is documented that the purpose of the first examination of the new born is to confirm normality and to provide reassurance to the parents (MacKeith, 1995, Hall, 1999) and also to identify any apparent physical abnormality (Buston and Durward 2001). However the question that we may wish to consider is ‘what is normal in a neonatal who is undergoing major physiological adaptations to extra uterine life (Blackburn and Loper, 1993) ? How as midwives can we fulfil this expectation of norm, when there is, as Hall (1999) suggests no confirmation of normality available ? Nevertheless a thorough search of the literature suggests that the neonatal examination is universally accepted as ‘good practice’, and any deviation from this practice could perhaps, potentiate negligence when subjected to the Bolam test (Sherratt, A, 2001). This test is often used as a benchmark to measure any negligence by, and examines if another professional of same standing would act in the same manner.…

I have no idea how you can handle working in the NICU. In some ways, I can understand it being extremely gratifying being able to help those babies. However, I cannot imagine myself doing that job, if feel like it would be too much on me mentally. These little guys depend on others; they do not choose what happens to me. I think that is what gets me about these patients. I find myself really impressed that you are not only willing to this job, but seem as if you are thriving at this job. I can see you making a real difference going into that job. Keep up all the good…

    Newborn Exam

The government initiatives to reduce junior doctors’ hours within the NHS Plan (DH 2000) have increased the call for midwives to expand their traditional role and take on some of the tasks that in the past have mainly been carried out by junior doctors (Kings Fund 2011). Having been working within the community setting as a midwife for the past three years I was interested in extending my role in order to provide more holistic care for my caseload of clients and their babies. Holistic care for mothers, babies and their families is highly recommended within the midwifery profession and is known to provide an improved experience for women (Changing Childbirth (DOH 1993a) NMC 2012, NICE 2006). The Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) is one element of the UK National Screening programme and is offered to all parents for their baby within 72 hours of birth and then repeated again at 6 weeks of age, usually by their GP. This role is one of the tasks that has been highlighted where midwives can expand their role (Marshall & Raynor 2010). The trust where I work has recently introduced community clinics where parents can take their baby in order to have the newborn examination performed, therefore allowing early discharge home from the unit enabling early family bonding. With this in mind I commenced the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination course.…

    Nicu Recruitment Process

According to Allbutt and Masters (2010), even the most experienced researchers find difficulty in recruiting adults in a research project. In view of this, Steinke (2004) contended previously that an essential issue in the recruitment process is to develop a mutual trust between the researcher and the participants. Since the researcher is a registered nurse in the NICU team in the hospital where the study will be conducted, a direct trust can be fostered and potential involvement of registered nurses was considered high. Nevertheless, determining recruitment and response rate is influenced by the presence of a network of key individuals who will aid in preparing the participants about the research and support the recruitment process (King and…
