The Heritage Assessment is not beneficial in treating an individual as a whole. If one utilized this specific tool, it would be very difficult to implement a plan of care that caters to the individual’s cultural needs during a patients hospital stay. Furthermore it is a healthcare member’s responsibility to attempt to make a person of cultural difference feel as comfortable as possible to build a bond of trust with the patient and the family members. Some of the questions asked on the Heritage Assessment tool may stop this from occurring, placing a brick wall between communication and the need of patient education. One individual from each of the following groups was assessed: Chinese, Filipino, West India and I, an African-American born in the urban area of Philadelphia. Health maintenance is how an individual prevents illness and maintains maximum function. In the African American community health promotion is being geared toward the youth and the elderly, programs such as Get Moving, the Silver Sneaker club are just a few programs that encourage a healthier diet and place a strong emphasis on exercise. The African American diet is very high in fats and starches; it includes a lot of fried foods and meals that are layered in cheeses and sugars. This is a perfect combination for high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and diabetes. The diet consists of rice, Tapioca fish, meat, vegetables and spicy foods. The socio-economics of the West Indian countries are poor. They have private hospitals and government hospital. Health education is performed by public health nurses in the wake of a crisis. For example, if cases such as typhoid start appearing in hospital wards nurses will begin to educate the community on preventative measures.
The Chinese culture is more in touch with the energy of the earth, yin and yang and the importance of meditation. The diet is health oriented; consisting of grains, seafood, and vegetables. The use of spices and herbs such as ginger, sassafras and many more are used to help with pains and illness. In comparison to the Chinese art of meditation and herbs, the African-American community places strong emphasis of the power of prayer, a strong belief that a higher power will heal.
The interviewees are my coworkers, nursing professionals that came over to America with their BSNs. Through their achievements, they have been able to develop socio-economic stability and are now able to assist with the cost of the health care required to take care of their elderly parents back home. They are financially accountable for the health promotion, health restoration and health maintenance of their family back
