Leadership is the process of influencing, communicating, and motivating groups of people in order to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). This role is underpinned with trust and requires an emotional intelligence from the leaders themselves. Other needed skills involve a cognitive ability to understand the situation at hand, a behavioral competency in order to adapt to the situation, and a process competency that allows effective communication to others (Huber, 2014). Leaders focus on people and group goals. Leadership is important in nursing because through leadership the various elements of nursing practice are implemented to ensure the best quality of care

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment Projections 2012-2022 released in December 2013, Registered Nursing is listed among the top occupations in terms of job growth through 2022 (American Association of Colleges of Nursing,2014). The nursing shortage will have a significant impact on the care that is being provided to the patients. Nursing leaders have the authority to hire or recruit new nurses to meet the needs of the facility. In this paper the author will discuss why nursing shortage is occurring, why nurses are displeased with the profession, and how nursing managers and leader will deal with nursing shortage and help to recruit nursing …show more content…
A good leader is able to take good advice from anyone apart of the nursing team whether nursing aide, licensed nurse, or registered nurse. Leaders should also have to make some difficult decisions at times to reduce a negative environment. Removing negative staff members from the atmosphere is key in running a successful business. As the saying goes “One apple spoils the whole bunch”. Maintaining a positive, safe work environment and building a team that focuses on the safety and well being of its patients as well as the entire healthcare team is the ultimate goal (McGuire & Kennedy, 2006). It is everyone’s responsibility to improve the retention of nurses in the healthcare facilities across the United States. A good leader would promote a positive environment that includes collaboration with other members of the healthcare team. A happy staff has a happy leader. Once this attribute is put into focus in the healthcare facilities it is then that we will see more happy nurses that is ready to provide safe and efficient care to the

    Summary: This article informs the reader of the shortage of nurses. The article mentions, as in the past, nurses are still putting in long hours, caring for more patients, desperately trying to stay on top of things. There is a new nursing shortage, different from the old one. The reasons of the shortage are examined. Fewer people are entering the nursing field, a general dissatisfaction of many issues, and a high burnout rate.
