Edgewood Lake Hospital (ELH) which opened in 1945, is a 30-bed, independent, not-for-profit hospital located in rural northern California. It provides inpatient and outpatient services to the close-knit community that resides within the forested and lakeside town the facility is nestled in. Although it is known for its great track record for quality and is held in high regard by the surrounding community, it has steadily experienced financial losses from 2006 through 2009. The Mercer County Hospital and Home became known locally as the county poor farm. The facility acquired this nickname due to the role that agriculture would come to play for both the residents and the community. The use of agriculture provided not only nourishment to the residents of the home, as well as Mercer County Jail inmates, but also served as a means of employment for those who were able bodied and capable of manual labor on the grounds. At its height of production, the farm consisted of three houses, two chicken coups, two slaughter houses, a refrigeration house, a dairy barn, and a pig barn along with other buildings needed for the successful production of an area farm. During the 1950’s, the farm was at its peak production with pigs, chickens, dairy cattle, and beef cows. Crops grew fruits and vegetables and the “poor farm” was self sufficient.…
New York State initially purchased Hart Island to use it as a Potter’s Field. A Potter’s Field is a place of burial for unidentified or poor people.The term potter’s field “refers to land purchased outside of town and comes from a passage in Matthew 27:5-7:” as stated in the book Hart Island on page 1. It is also the tenth Potter’s Field in the city’s history. The island was purchased by the Department of Charities and Correction for the purpose of setting up a workhouse for older boys from the House of Refuge on Randall’s Island.The first documented burials at Hart Island date back to May 1881. It was first used during the American Civil War 1861-1865. The burial ground is still in use to this day, however, there are some periods where there are no recorded uses or burials on the island. As stated in the educational book Hart Island on page 5, “Hart Island was a part of New York before the boroughs of Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.”…
