Nadine Gordimer's Fear
Fear often becomes our worst enemy when it makes you become irrational and stops you from thinking clearly. First of all, fear can make us become overly cautious, to the point where it causes harm. In Nadine Gordimer’s novel “Once Upon a Time” a family builds a barbed wire wall because they are so afraid of the robberies and the boy decides to explore the fence and dies from being shredded by the wire “(the boy) dragged a ladder to the wall, the shining coiled tunnel...with the first fixing of its razor-teeth in his knees and hands and head he… struggled deeper into its tangle.” (Gordimer, 6 ). The family built the fence to protect themselves but it only ended up hurting them. The family’s fear ended up destroying them. Throughout my life,

I’ve read a lot of things about “fear.” There’s the fear of failing in the eyes of others, the fear of self-failure and God-failure, the fear of what other think about me, fears of an unknown future, and many practical fears about family and friends with their jobs and illnesses and relationships. While the kind of fears I normally deal with are important, the kind of fear Thurman writes about is different in its oppressive, relentless pursuit to dispossess and marginalize. The fear Thurman talks about is the concrete, real presence of political and religious powers who use their powers and religion to crush the spirits of people. He writes: “Fear is one of the persistent “hounds of hell” that dog the footsteps of the poor, the dispossessed, the disinherited… When the power and the tools of violence are on one side, the fact that there is no available and recognized protection from violence makes the resulting fear deeply terrifying.” And: “There are few things more devastating than to have it burned into you that you do not count and that no provisions are made for the literal protection of your person.” Of course not all fear is bad. God made us so to fear the tornado that spins on the horizon, heading our way. Not to fear this is not to care about friends and families. This is fear as, says Thurman, a “safety device.”…

On March 4, 1933, President Roosevelt said to the the American people, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” This quote means that if you are overcome by fear, it will make the situation you’re in harder. When I read this, I say that I agree with our former president. When looking at the stories and article, “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street,” “Three Skeleton Key,” and “Stepping it Up,” they show us that fear is our worst enemy when you are overcome by it.…

It follows David’s life and the events he encounters. “The Chrysalids” shows the distinct separation between what is normal and what is abnormal. Wyndham explores many themes throughout the text, the main one being fear. “Most people are motivated by fear”, in “The Chrysalids.” This essay will explore the theme of fear with the different groups and important characters, shaping the theme of fear present in the text. These groups are the ‘Waknuk Community’, who believe they are the “true image of God.” The ‘Telepathic children’, who runaway or risk their abilities being found out and ‘The Fringes’ people, known as the ‘Mutants’, who are the one’s with deviations.…

Fear is defined as an emotional response to a percieved threat; it is a survival mechanism, and, depending on the person, it determines how we react when we are faced with such confrontations. Look at agoraphobia. It is the fear of going outside. James Mcintosh wrote “intense fear of any situation where escape may be difficult.” Fearing this can destroy someone if they allow it to get to them. Fear is a powerful thing that can destroy someone even if that fear is minuscule as this. Not that many people has this phobia, “about 1.8 million American adults”, but the people that do have it are terrified of outside. Their families are even effected by this fear. It consumes them as well as they fear for their relative. People face this fear and it will destroy them if they allow it to continue.…

Fear can either paralyze people-or wake them up. Essentially, it keeps us safe and drives us to survive. Fear makes us more conscious and strengthens our instincts. However, fear can cause crippling anxiety. Not allowing any enjoyment out of the bounds of what is perceived as “safe”. Fear can also cause obsession, hallucinations, and fits of constant paranoia. Edgar Allan Poe uses objects that each character obsesses over to induce fear. Though each character subjected to Poe’s devices react differently they are all connected through irony, symbolism, and theme.…

Most people’s perception of fear comes from negative standpoint, where fear is the evil villain that you try to get away from, but can fear also be helpful? In all good stories, there is always a dilemma, and with the struggle of that problem comes fear, but what truly shows that character’s mental strength or personality is how they handle that problem. In the stories, ¨The Tell-Tale Heart,” ¨The Pit and the Pendulum,”and ¨The Masque of the Red Death,” all of the main characters experience fear, but handle it in very different ways. Whether they use that fear to help them overcome the problem, or their fear results in paranoia. Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism, irony, and figurative language to portray how fear distorts the emotional state…

According to Arash Javanbakht and Linda Saab, both Assistant professors of Psychiatry at Wayne State University. They explain that fear is a defense mechanism. The brain prepares us when we sense danger, the first reaction is in the amygdala, a set of nuclei near the temporal lobe, it senses emotion, mostly anger and fear and this allows our bodies to trigger the fight or flight method. Studies from the University of Minnesota explain that fear even sharpens our sense to help survival, it improves eyesight and shuts down the digestive system, which is necessary for survival. While the brain and body attempt to help us survive, fear can still harm a human. Chronic fear can lead to physical health problems, such as the weakening of the immune system, accelerated aging, and even premature death. Fear can also lead to mental health problems, such as depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. This shows that while fear triggers the defense mechanism in your brain, it also can have negative long lasting effects on a person. All in all, while people see different forms of fear and cope in different ways, fear, while just an emotion, can affect a person so much that they have to live with its problems for the rest of their…

Edmund Burke once stated “No passion so effectively robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear”. In other words fear of anything especially what a person does not know or understand can cripple one’s mind very effectively and with a large magnitude. A person would only need to recall the last time they were afraid of something they didn’t understand or when they didn’t know what to do to stop something from happening and reflect upon how their brain reacted to know that this is true. This can be proven true in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.…

Fear can act as an extremely powerful motive in the subconscious mind. We tend to interpret having fear as being scared of something like the dark, for example. But this is not its only effect. Fear can act as a subconscious control over the mind. It can influence your actions and drive you to do things against people whom were once your friends. This can cost dearly in both your happiness and your reputation. When the boys first arrived at the island they were all nice British school boys who followed the rules, but then quickly deteriorated into malicious killing savages. The physical and psychological deterioration of the boys in The Lord of the Flies is largely due to how the emotional experience of fear is powerful enough to spark off several other emotions like a trail of dominoes. ‘Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering’. This quote is a famous line spoken by Master Yoda in Star Wars whilst giving wise advice to Luke Skywalker. This advice can also be looked at in The Lord of the Flies. It gives a fantastic portrayal of how one feeling or emotion can trigger off several others…

Fear can be helpful in many ways. It can help by offering restraint and it can suppress irrational acts. An example is driving past the red light. As the light turns from yellow to red you think of stepping on it, but the fear of receiving a ticket stops you from speeding. Fear can be useful, but it can also be damaging. A disadvantage of fear is that it can lead to paranoia which then leads to obsession. Obsession is dangerous as seen in the three stories written by Edgar Allen Poe. The first story “Tell-Tale Heart”, it's about a man that obsesses about a creepy eye. The “Pit and the Pendulum” is about a man that’s stuck in a prison and is faced with many extremely difficult obstacles. Finally, the “Masque of Red Death” is about a prince named Prince Prospero that fears the red death and so locks himself and his friends from the outside world. In the all of the three stories, Poe uses symbol, irony, and imagery to inform us on how fear can deceive your rational thoughts and the outcome of the trick.…

I suppose you are wondering why I am speaking of fear as an educational topic. To begin we will have to take a trip back in time. August of 2003 was an exciting and fearful time in my life. The months to come would be uncertain and frightful. My, now, husband was graduating high school and our future was coming at us fast. I was certain in my career path of nursing. My husband, on the other hand, was undecided. We had already been together for two years. I knew I would marry that man. We were planning our lives together at the young ages 18 and 20.…
