In passage number 1, the author uses the literary element of imagery to portray the meaning of the poem. The author starts off by describing the main character and how she is reading. She says “ A shaded light shines on the nape half-shadowed by her curls, And a page turns now with a scuffing sound. Onward they come again.” This excerpt begins to paint a picture in the readers mind about the character reading. As the poem goes on more pictures are portrayed in the readers mind, like when she compares herself to a character in a story. as she reads. She says “Still turns enchanted to the next bright page Like a Natasha in the ballroom door.” She describes how when she turn the page of the books just wanting to read more and more. The poem further develops by telling the reader how delighted she is to read and how she lives several lives through her stories. This imagery creates a feeling of enchantment which is also carried throughout the passage to bring the whole poem together.

Passage One and Passage Two establish the controlling idea that reading can widen someone’s horizon. In Passage One, the poem, the author is rereading great stories from her childhood. As she reads the books she already knows what is going to happen but she is still into the stories. She feels as if she is living all these different lives through her reading. It is as if she is time traveling from book to book. The author says “Still turns enchanted to the next bright page like some Natasha in the ballroom door.” The reader is reading the book and they make her feel magical. She is even compared to a character in the stories. It is as if her life changes as she reads these book. In Passage two, the short story excerpt, the author lives in the nation of Panduria where the government wants to get rid of bad idea of the war by taking them out of books. One lieutenant as he reads the books think what he reading is an outrage and disgrace to his government but as he gains a better understanding of what he is reading he changes his opinion. He author says “ For heaven sake! The things you learn! Who would even have thought.” He is talking about all the new thing he is learning about the war from his reading. This lieutenant gains a different out look and opinion from these books. In both passages one and two reading widens someone’s horizon.
Woman in the Red Dress

She walks in the room in a long red dress,
Her hair in a bun, head high she just knew she was better than the rest,
She walks across the room
Oh so very slow,
She loves the attention and she lets it show, catching everyones eyes she saw how they stare,
Everything was perfect about her and she was very aware,
As she keeps walking at that same slow steady pace, with a switch in her hips and not one hair out of place,
She sits in the corner
All by herself,
Crossing her legs
She knows her wealth,
She a man dream and a woman deepest desire,
But if you look very closely there nothing special about her,
She craves attention
Its everything that she needs,
Without it she honestly does not know where she would be,
People stop looking at her and her shine is over,
That once so special woman is now just sitting alone in the corner,
And as another woman walks in in a long red dress,
She come to the realization she is just as common as the rest
My poem’s theme is power. It is about a woman who has power over people because of how she looks, but in reality the attention she get has a power over her.

Imagery is an important literary device which, when used well, can enable an author to convey powerful and persuasive themes. Imagery can also be used to convey the mood of a book in ways that straightforward, factual descriptions never could. Jewett's use of imagery is incredibly effective. She uses imagery to convey Sylvia's surroundings and emotions to the reader. The theme of the power of the books is posed immediately in line 1 by alluding to "they" as having "stratagems".
