Naked Egg Research
Are naked eggs with no shell? What? You may think I am speaking about a hard boiled egg, but, no. Boiled eggs have their centers heated making the shell easily come off. Naked eggs have their shells taken off with one simple ingredient everyone has. Vinegar. The vinegar acid inside the vinegar strips the shell away from the egg. The vinegar solutions dissolves the shell from the egg. Once the egg has been separated form it's shell the only thing keeping the liquid goo inside is the thin, flexible membrane. Naked eggs are eggs with their shell removed after a vinegar soak revealing the membrane without cracking the egg. The membrane keeps the soft, gooey insides, inside the egg. Osmosis is when there is an imbalance between two solutes and the liquid will move to balance the solutes making them the same. The more concentrated solute is going to pull to the side that has less concentration and will become the same concentration. In …show more content…
The formula of vinegar is CH3COOH. The formula for corn syrup is C12H22O11. And lastly the formula for salt is NaCL. C stands for carbon. H stands for hydrogen and O stands for oxygen. At the end of our experiment we saw that there were drastic changes to the eggs. The corn syrup egg lost nearly half of its water content making it shriveled and very fragile. The vinegar egg stayed the same and it did not lose or gain vinegar. With the salt water egg we had two of them lose water and one of them gain water. The largest egg of them all was the vinegar egg. The smallest egg of them all was the corn syrup egg! Fun Fact: You can eat naked eggs. They are considered a delicacy in China and are called 100 hundred year old eggs even they are not fermented for 100 years. During this experiment we learned corn syrup will take away the water out of the egg because it wants to balance its sugars. This will cause the corn syrup egg to become shriveled up and

    What is osmosis? Osmosis is a very important part of biology. It is the spontaneous passage of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane. A semipermeable membrane is one that blocks the passage of dissolved substances. Osmosis occurs when there is an imbalance of solutes outside of a cell versus inside the cell. A solution that has a higher concentration of solutes than another solution is said to be hypertonic, and water molecules tend to diffuse into a hypertonic solution. Cells in a hypertonic solution will shrivel as water leaves the cell via osmosis. If a solution has a lower concentration of solutes than another solution it is said to be hypotonic, and water molecules tend to diffuse out of a hypotonic solution. Cells in a hypotonic solution will take on too much water and swell. The purpose of this experiment is to observe the process of osmosis and getting a better understanding on how osmosis works. To study osmosis I will be using two non-boiled eggs. Eggs are used because under the hard outer shell is a semipermeable membrane that allows air and moisture to pass through. Because water molecules can move into and out of the egg but large molecules cannot, the semipermeable egg membrane allows for an exploration of the concepts of diffusion and osmosis. I will be removing the outer shells of the eggs and then testing one of the eggs with water and the other egg with corn syrup to determine which solution is hypertonic and which solution is hypotonic. My hypothesis is, is that the egg in the corn syrup solution will be hypertonic where the molecules will move out of the egg causing it to shrivel and the egg in the water solution will be hypotonic causing the egg to swell.…
