In an article called from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration called, “Impaired Driving: Get the Facts” it states, “Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes. The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $59 billion” (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 1). The fact that so many people die every day in the United States from alcohol related accidents is absolutely ridiculous. The stories are endless. In Steve Schmadeke’s article, “Man gets 15 years in DUI accident that killed mother, son” He talks about the terrible tragedy that ended two innocent lives. Schmadeke states, “A speeding, unlicensed driver who crashed into another car on the Northwest Side, killing a mother and her teenage son and injuring three other children, was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison” (Schmadeke 1). Because 37 year old, Richard Strum decided to drive while intoxicated, he took two innocent lives and injured three others. He not only took a mother, but he also took a daughter, sister, and wife. He not only took a son, but he also took a brother, cousin, best friend, student, and ultimately someone who didn’t even have a chance at real life before it was taken away. Drunken driving accidents are far too…
Second, since our grand opening in January 2014, our menu has not changed for breakfast. We offer the same few selections and the same daily specials…
Why would a person drink and drive? Could we put up more procedures to stop drunk driving? We could set up a free taxi cab service for the bars or social get-together this could save thousands of lives. Live that has yet to grow up as children are also killed from drunk driving. Those children might survive and their parents might have been unfortunate enough to die. Those children then have to grow up without a real parent. They will ask themselves “why did this person have to kill my parents I never know then, yet they were taken away from before I could enjoy them.” How could you live with this guilt on your mind? This could eat away at you until you do something that you can’t comeback from…
I know what you’re thinking; what kind of ignorant ideas does a person like me have to offer to this problem? But I promise if these actions are applied, there will be a complete end to the treacherous idea of drinking and driving. First off, law enforcement would drive around to random parties and steak out for people trying to drive under the influence. If they catch them and they blow over the limit, they will be tazed until they drop unconscious to the ground, then pop all of the tires on their car. As an alternative, instead of wasting time with a steak out, cops could blow up all the cars in the area of the party. Maybe that will teach the drinkers to take a taxi or a bus. Now unfortunately, there’s always going to be those people who make it behind the wheel. This is very dangerous to the person driving, but more dangerous to the public who’s actually doing the right thing. So for a solution to that problem, whoever is caught shall be sent to…
People who drink are meantally uncapable of makeing self concious decisions. With the peer pressure for their friends and enviroment, people are more likely to drink more. If you drove whle drunk and killed yourself, what would happen to your family? They could possible loose a source of income and possible their only. If their first penalty was more severe, then there is a better chanve they wont do it again. Khloe Kardashian was pulled over in MArch of 2004 for suspected drunk driving. After finding out she was, she wasw imprisioned for 3 hours. She pleaded no contrest and was sentenced to 36 month probation. Although she wasnt in jail long, that has been her only DUI. If the government took drunk driving more serioulst, then there might no be as many deaths as there are now.…
Millions of people have been killed in alcohol related accidents, 90 percent of those people were innocent bystanders who were going on about their day minding their own business. Drunk drivers are people who make stupid mistakes ...mistakes they can't fix. Those drivers are the cause of many deaths of innocent bystanders...drunk drivers are the killers of themselves and others. Drunk drivers are murderers...they earn a title that haunts them to the day they die. This title takes away all trust people had for these drinkers...this title takes away all a person's hope and dreams turning them into nothing but mindless alcoholics. Though drunk drivers face punishments as serious as jail time, the consequences of their actions do not generally keep them from getting behind the wheel.…
“Have one drink for the road” was, until recently, a commonly used phrase in American culture. It has only been within the past 20 years that as a nation, we have begun to recognize the dangers associated with drunk driving (Sutton 463). According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this year 519,000 people, or one person per minute, will be injured in alcohol-related accidents. 10,839 people will die in drunk-driving crashes this year – that is one death every 50 minutes. The heartbreaking part is, every injury and lost life due to driving after drinking can be prevented. Drinking while driving “accidents” are not merely “accidents.” Getting in a vehicle after consuming alcohol, which severely affects the function of the brain, is not an accident. It is lack of responsibility. Individuals that consume alcohol irresponsibly must begin to take responsibility for themselves and for other innocent drivers on the road. Unfortunately, in spite of great progress, alcohol-impaired driving remains a serious national problem that tragically affects many victims annually (Hanson). It is time that laws and consequences for drinking while driving strengthen and people begin to think twice before driving a vehicle after drinking. Individuals who make the decision to drive after consuming alcohol, not only put themselves in a dangerous situation, they also put an entire community at risk. Current laws, which are not strict or powerful enough, must be increased in order to keep our neighborhoods around the nation safe. Although many people think current drinking while driving limits and laws are strict enough, the rising number of individuals who continue to make an irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol, make it imperative that current legal limits, laws, and consequences for drinking while driving, be increased in order to punish drivers appropriately and help repair communities, relationships, and, most…
I believe Margaret Drabble’s statement, “Our desire to conform is greater than our respect for objective facts,” to be quite true. Throughout history, people of all ages have wanted to be accepted and belong to a group rather than look at the facts and measure what is true and false. It is very evident in our society today that not only do we want to be accepted and belong, but we also are willing to do whatever it takes, no matter what the consequences turn out to be. I agree with Drabble’s statement and believe that it is true all around the world. If you were to step outside our society and look back at it objectively, I can assure you that you would see evidence of this.…
At some point in our lives we have heard a news report that involved a drunk driver and an innocent victim. Usually these incidents are accidents where a person driving under the influence runs a red light or jumps a curb, hitting, and more often than not, killing an innocent person. These injuries and deaths are all easily preventable. In the United States, over 20% of all motor vehicle related deaths are caused by an impaired driver. Which is why this crime continues to be a national problem that takes the lives of thousands of people every year (Hanson). Way too often the victims of these tragedies are young teens or children. Why people drive drunk is a question that people have been trying to answer for a long time. There have been suggestions to implement tougher DUI laws, which seems like a great idea. Unfortunately, people seem to only look at the downside rather than what tougher laws would do for the safety of the public.…
Imagine being in a bar with a few of your good friends. Everyone is drinking and having a good time. Your are going to leave and go home, but you friends won't let you because they know the dangers of driving after having a few drinks. Instead they ca ll a cab to give you a ride home. You would be extremely lucky to have such smart friends. Drunk driving is a very serious problem in our society today, but it is becomming socially unacceptable causing the numbers of alcohol related traffic fatalites t o decline considerably.…
Drinking and driving can cause a lifetime of pain. When you get under the wheel while you are intoxicated not only are you putting yourself at risk, but also the lives of other innocent people are in danger. Everyone should have the right to drink but if you act irresponsibly, your right should be taken away. Each person is liable to suffer the consequences from endangering others. One who drives drunk not only should have their license taken away, they should have the right to drink taken away. Drinking and driving may not seem like a big deal until you see what happens when things go wrong. I would like you to read a personal narrative that Casey McCary Bloom wrote who is now serving 21 years to life in prison.…
Drinking while driving is very well know around the United States. Drivers license should be lost and suspended for a year if caught drinking while driving. It is a dangerous habit to get into and people should not get away with it. Drinking while driving is dangerous to the public and has very serious effects who drinks. Why Should a problem like this be dealt with? This is very dangerous to those around and people could get seriously hurt from this. It’s not right that people get hurt and injured from car accident because people think it’s ok to drink and drive. Teens are some of the numbered people that are drinking and driving. An example would be a boy by the name of Ethan Couch was son of a multimillionaire was drinking, and driving and crashed into a disabled…
Every day 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes on average and 20% of Child Passenger Deaths are Due to Drunk Driving Crashes. Drunk driving is the 15th leading cause of death in the united states today 19 percent of those deaths belong to children between the ages 0 to 14. The drinking while intoxicated penalty should be increased because tons of deaths have been caused by DUI, many drunk drivers are repeat offenders, and with technology in the 21st century a person can order an uber and have a sober ride home.…
Drinking and driving has been a problem in the United States for what seems like forever. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, driving while intoxicated is “the crime most frequently committed by a non-criminal,” (DWIfacts.net). It seems at least once a week there is a story in the news about someone leaving the bar drunk and never making it home. What if those people made a different choice? What if they chose, or chose to be a designated driver? Their stories would have ended much differently. There are hundreds of reasons to make the right decision and be the designated driver. For one, it is fun to be the voice of reason and the morning-after- story-teller. Also, it keeps the driver and driver’s friends out of trouble, and choosing to stay sober and drive keeps everyone safe.…
“About 29% of teen drivers killed in auto crashes in 2002 had been drinking” (Triplett 1). Young teenagers do not think about the consequences of consuming alcohol and then getting behind the wheel. They are already faced with the responsibility of becoming a new driver. By lowering the legal alcohol age, teenagers now have another thing to worry about. By exposing them to these two new things, one being drinking and the other being driving, they are less likely to know how to handle both responsibilities at the same time. Keeping the legal drinking age at 21 not only saves the lives of individuals, but it also saves the lives of the public. “Half of the people who die in traffic crashes involving underage drinking drivers are people other than the drinking drivers” (Hamilton 1). "My name is Jessica Rasdall, and on Feb. 25, 2006, I killed my best friend”, says Jessica, an 18 year old at the time of the accident. Jessica and her best friend went out to a club, had a few drinks, and then decided to take the wheel while under the influence. Jessica, being the driver, ended up surviving the crash, but had to live with the fact that she killed her best friend, since kindergarten, because she decided to drive intoxicated. Killing others because of a stupid mistake can stick with someone for the rest of their life. All of these fatalities can easily be prevented if teens don’t drive while under the influence, not that they should be…
