It is Okay Not to Fit In
Sometimes being different is not a bad thing. From a very young age I was labeled “different” I started reading before the start of kindergarten, I would rather read then play outside and I actually liked homework. I did not mind being “different”. I never thought being smart would be such a bad thing. In school I always tested high I was above average they said, so in fifth grade they placed me in T.A.G., the Talented and Gifted program. What should have been such a great thing in my life turned out to be a bad experience, just because I did not want to be different for the first time in my life.
When the school gave me a letter to bring home I was terrified I just knew I was in trouble. My mother picked me up at school that day and as we drove home all I could think about was the letter in my book bag. I knew I had to give it to her sometime today, so right there in the backseat I came up with my plan. The plan was to go home do all my chores, help her with dinner, help clean up, and then give her the letter. The time had come dinner was over I had helped cleaned up now my whole family was watching TV together. I went to my room and grabbed the letter and slowly walked to the living room to hand it to my mother. As soon as she seen the letter her face changed, but as she read it she began to smile. The letter read “ Dear Ms. Carter, congratulations based on her test scores and academic achievements your child has been selected to participated in T.A.G. our talented and gifted program “! She showed my dad the letter and they were both so excited I did not know what T.A.G. was, but I knew it had to be good.
The very first day of T.A.G. I could not wait for eleven o’clock to come. When the bell rang I shot over to the class where it was being held. I was the first one there just waiting for what was to come. After a few minutes the other students began to file in, some of them my friends and then finally our teacher. Mr. Barnes explained to us what T.A.G was and how we would be doing things like learning chess, playing educational games on the computer, and other fun ways to learn. As T.A.G progressed I loved it. I did not mind that it was during recess or that I had extra homework. I was excited and honored to be a part of something so interesting and new, but everyone was not as excited for me.
While I thought T.A.G was amazing my friends did not. The other kids, some who I thought were my friends began to tease me and call me names like nerd, dork, and loser. I could not figure out why this was going on, I thought T.A.G. was a good thing. I became an outsider quickly nobody wanted to play with me anymore, the only friends I had were the other people in T.A.G. I got tired of being the butt of everyone’s joke, so I started slacking off and eventually stopped doing my work in T.A.G. I thought this would help me in the end, but it did not in the slightest bit. One day I got another letter from the school this time I could not wait to show it to my mom. Only this time it was not good I had been kicked out of talented and gifted program. My mother was furious and sad all in one she immediately scheduled a parent teacher conference with Mr. Barnes. In that meeting, he explained how I had stopped doing my work and stopped coming to class and that was why I had to be removed. So my plan worked I gained my so called friends back, but I hurt my mother in the worst way.
I learned a very important lesson that year about what actually matters in life. Looking back I wish I would have never let people get to me so deeply. I gave up something I loved, something that not only brought me joy, but also my parents. I was so caught up in what other thought of me instead of what I actually wanted to do. Never again will I let someone steal my joy from me, just to fit in.

“Wake up!” my mom gave me a little shove as I took the covers off my face and looked at the clock, it was 7:20. I hopped off the bed and skipped to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I was so excited; this whole week was FCAT week at school and today was the math portion of the test. Last year, 3rd grade, I got a 3 on it while on the reading part I had gotten a 5. This year, I was determined to get a 4, no matter how difficult the test may be. I put my long, wavy brown hair in a ponytail and, being the girly girl that I am, decorated it with a pink bow my aunt had given me for Christmas. With a big smile on my face I went to my mom’s room to see if she was ready so we could be on our way, I saw her sitting down looking at her nails, “mommy, we’re going to be late” she looked up at me and it looked like she had been crying, she faked a smiled, got her bag and out the door we went.…

As I sat down to begin eating my food, my mother turned and looked at me to ask me how my morning was going so far. I told her I was having a fantastic morning. I had helped my mom get dressed because she asked me what dress she should wear to my graduation. I told her to wear her long black and white striped dress with some heels.…

We were so happy, I started explaining to her where we were, how the place looked like and that there was a big garbage can, as I explain tears dripped from my eyes. We hugged each other, cried, and stayed put right next to the garbage can. We finally saw my mother’s silver BMW car. We slowly walked towards the car, making sure that it was my mother or one of our parents are in there. I then saw my mother did something with her hand, I know what that meant to hurry up, I told my little cousins to hurry up and get in the car, we ran as fast as we could towards the car and got in. Since then my little cousins and I learned a very big and important lesson that we will never forget, it to your pacings with your family, close and to tell them that you need a break if you are losing your…

“I’ve been drinking since I was twelve, but I don’t think I was exactly twelve. Maybe older, maybe younger. I’m a little tipsy now but that’s not what you want to hear. I was once told I drank like an eel, I’m not sure what that meant, but again that’s not what you want to hear. You want me to sit here and tell you the exact traumatic moment when I began drinking; It was the first time I ever had that nightmare. The next day I asked my dad why drank, he said ‘I drink to forget’. He never told me what he was trying to forget. I thought ‘I drinking makes you forget, maybe I’ll forget the dream.’ So I drank a couple of beers then went to sleep. The dream was worse than before, but that was the cycle every night for the past thirty-five years.”…

At my old school I was actually considered one of the smartest people in my grade, but here everything was a lot more challenging and a lot more is expected out of you. I woke up to the annoying call of my grandmother screaming at me to come downstairs and eat breakfast, even though I haven’t eaten breakfast in years. I hollered back down at her that I wasn’t hungry but she didn’t seem happy with that answer so she came upstairs and told me to go downstairs right now and get something to eat. I trudged down the stairs and and instead of grabbing a plate to grab some eggs and bacon like my grandfather I grabbed an apple. I showed it to my grandma as I ran back up the stairs. I knew she wasn’t happy with my choice but it seemed to satisfy her need to care for me…

There had been only a couple days left till the very first football game of my senior year. The team we are playing was the Haywood County Spurs, and the game we had been preparing and practicing for since our sophomore year. The sun was blistering hot, shining down on my shoulder pads, baking me in my uniform like a freshly made apple pie on a summer day. This only made practice worse as I put all effort into it as I could. I was so sore and fatigued and happy that by the end of the week we wouldn’t be having any more sweat dripping practices. 100 yard dashes and High-jumps were not something people wanted to do every day, that’s for sure. And after those warm-up exercises we moved onto play calling. The team worked hard together during practices and repetitively did each and every play so that they came to us like a fond habit. We wanted to have these plays inscribed in our minds as we slept.…

One mistake a lot of people make is trying to fit in, why fit in when you can stand out. Being different means, not being afraid to challenge the norm., being willing to take a chance, asking why, making your own track, not just following the well-trodden path, charting your own course and destiny and being the person that you were meant to be. I believe that it is a fact that everyone is born unique; but through the years we work very hard to be…

    Surprise Birthday Party

It was a foggy, gloomy morning in the month of November. It was November 19, the best day ever, MY BIRTHDAY! I was turning ten. That morning at about 6:30am I jumped out of my bed with much excitement. It was a school day. I picked out my cleanest uniform I had in my closet and the cleanest shoes I had in my shoe box. I jumped in the shower and sang the whole time, until it was time to get out. It was time to get dressed and do my hair. As I was slipping on my white fluorescent polo shirt my mom quickly walked in and said “good-morning” and quickly walked out of my room. I wondered “did she forget it was my birthday”. However, I made my way to the kitchen to eat a nice healthy breakfast. I sat in front of a plate with pancakes, hash browns, scrambled eggs and bacon! As I was eating my breakfast, my little sister sat in the chair across from me, once again no had wished me a Happy Birthday.…
