Narrative Essay About Swimming Research Paper
I feel so nostalgic a lot of the time, watching the waves crashing into shore, people paddling out to hit the crests. I remember the feel of the water, the road of the wave, and the zen like moment when you hit that perfect pipe, and ride it halfway back to shore. I’ve been taking in a lot of the local Californian events lately, watching the new breed of surfer make their way out to the waves, hitting the spots I used to hit, part of me feels good, part of me misses it. I still hit the ocean when and where I can, I body board across some of the low waves near shore. Mostly because my swim strength is not what it used to be. I realized, reading over my previous blog posts that I never really mentioned what happened out there, and why my swimming came to an end. And perhaps sharing that tale can prove a little cautionary for those heading out for the ride. I had finished a local surf show and competition the night before, waves were great, some fourteen footers were making their appearance known, and I did relatively well, though wasn’t totally on my game that day. The next morning, I decided to get some extra practice in, and knew the waves would still be decent form the previous day. I wasn’t the only one, as about a dozen other surfers were already beach side when I showed up around six in the morning. We all paddled out, a couple locals …show more content…
I was on approach, waiting, letting the first wave pass so I could rush the second, I sat up on my board to readjust where I was laying. It’s a good thing I did. The fin of an oncoming surfers board went right across my left thigh, if I were still laying down, I would have taken it to the back, or worse, my spine. It happened so quick, I didn’t even see him there the moment before. A trip to the hospital confirmed severe bruising on my thigh, coupled with a deep, and long crack in my

Dr. Boggs sets all the equipment up so that we are ready to try the first activity which was wake surfing. The main activity my teammates wanted to do was wake surfing. None of them, including myself, had ever wake-surfed before, but it was one opportunity we could not miss out on. Cole, jumping out of his chair, could not wait to go first. He hopped out of the boat and swam towards the surf board. We all watched as Cole was about to be the first person on our team who would wake surf. “Now Cole there are a couple of steps that you have to do in order to get your board up and surf. First, you must lean back as far as you can with your left foot on the blue line and your right foot on the red line of the board. Next, when the boat starts to move, you have to press down on your right foot while tightly holding the rope with you left hand in front and right hand in the back. Finally, you will jerk forward and began to start surfing, but you have to stay low and on balance.”-Dr. Boggs. Cole was now ready to wake surf. He did all the steps Dr. Boggs had explained to him and he managed to fall face flat into the water. My teammates laughed as he tried to swim back to the board, but all that made me want to do was try it out for myself. Cole fell multiple times and was unable to stay on the board for more than ten…

Through my high-school rowing career, it was my goal to win first place in at-least one competition, whether it be in a boat with four people, or a boat with eight people. Shortly after I was added to the team, I switched places with the stroke seat in my boat due to my determination and hard efforts. Stroke seat sets the rhythm for the rest of the rowers, and as I quickly improved to be the most powerful and technical rower in my quad boat, I was to be the metronome. That year, we won most of our competitions. For the following rowing seasons, I was set as stroke seat in many of the boats I had competed in. I continued to improve my technique and speed in the boat, and became one of the most reliable stroke seat members in my school's entire…

When I was on the swim team during my sophomore year, I became a leader and lead our swim team to victory. The first few meets that buffalo grove high school participated in, victory did not seem like a possibility. Fortunately , with intense training from our new coaches and leadership skills from the older swimmers, we were able to turn that losing streak around into a glamorous victory. When the time came around for the practice 5 days before the meet. Ultimately my strategy was the 100 x 100’s. A combination of back to back butterfly , breaststroke, and freestyle, with only 7 second breaks in between each stroke. Unfortanatley, that was one of the most excruciating practices the BGHS swim team had experienced in the 2014 season. Although…

Quit!" in my heart, I felt that quitting was not the right response. I wanted to become as good a swimmer as my teammates.…

I don’t know exactly where I am going. Maybe this comes as a shock to those who think that because someone has good grades, they have their live figured out. It astonishes me just how mistaken this view is. Being born in Cuba I was limited as to what options I had for my life path. Consequently, the transition from one country to another when I was just twelve years old was very frustrating and tough. Somehow I managed to get a grasp of the language and progressively ascend from the lowest English classes to the most advanced in my school. I never failed to be hard on myself though, and I apply this concept to almost everything I do. However, this way of thinking has not come at no cost. My thinking process can be quite obsessive at times.…

When I decided to join track I felt as though it was the worst mistake that I could have ever made, simply because i did not like running as a child. After trying it for the first year and not giving up I enjoyed it very much and that is when I stated that I would continue to run track till I graduated high school. Then came ninth grade and not only did I continue to do Outdoor Track but I also joined Indoor Track and it helped me improve with my running for Outdoor Track. I participated in Soccer from sixth grade till ninth grade, because come tenth grade I realized I had a strong passion for running,…

I can say it has been over a year since I did my last amateur cross country race, between moving, family/work responsibilities and a self admitted laziness in actually getting my ass to a race early Sunday mornings when I could be sleeping in, I do, in fact miss this part of my cycling experience, therefore I am hoping to join in on the weekend racing festivities next spring when the local mountain bike series starts up again. Even though I have not done much racing lately, I have been doing plenty of riding and having a blast exploring all the sweet trails in my small part of the world. While writing this article on racing I was reminded of all the excitement, nervousness and unplanned chaos that comes hand in hand with weekend racing and…

It was my first day of practice for high school swimming. There I was- a scrawny freshman, idolizing these upperclassmen who towered above me. Being the only freshman in my class, my coach had me train alongside these giants. I remember the countless morning practices, which always involved grueling endurance sets, where my teammates lapped me constantly while I struggled to make the intervals; feeling disappointed in myself, but determined to continue working hard in order to catch up to my teammates. However, even those grueling workouts could not compare to Christmas break that year. A whole week of practices that were near impossible for my teammates, and absolute torture for me. I will never forget one set from that week. It was a set of 32x150s with a descending interval every four. By the last eight, I was no longer making the interval and struggling to keep up with my teammates, who ended up lapping me, as usual. But I still put every ounce of effort I had into that set, and swam every lap long after everyone else had finished. I challenged myself with a fierce determination to…

I was actually excited that the following day was going to be competition day. We practically spent all day swimming and just having a wonderful time down at the ocean. We all knew that we had to get the best out of this day because there was not going to be another day like this to enjoy. There we were around eight at night at a bonfire next to the ocean. Butterflies, Complete panic, a thrill of excitement as I slightly glance at the clear and pure water below me. A feeling of wanting, drilling through my mind when suddenly, the race is called, my first event, I feel a shudder run from my head to my toes as I am standing in a line with my competitors or you could say, my new enemies. When I get up onto the block the gun fires and the race has begun, I leap into the water and swim with all my might, like a sword fish catching its prey, kicking, holding my breath until I reach the surface. As I leapt into the icy cold water, I feel calm and relaxed, but now was not the time to be relaxed. After the first three laps, my heart was beating a thousand times a minute as if I had run a marathon, but all I noticed was that nobody was swimming by my side. “Could it be possible,” I thought to myself, “that I was ahead of all of my competitors?” That was when my heart instantly beat faster as I was on my last lap, gasping for air. My body was filled with excitement as I heard my name being chanted out in the crowd by my swim mates and coach. When I finally finished my race, they tell me my time, I feel a rush of pride, a personal best! I close my eyes and listen for my name being called for first place. I did it! I get out of the pool, and my adrenalin eventually dies down. I will never forget the feeling of pride and accomplishment from that…
