Narrative Essay: Aliyah's Life
Aliyah often laid in bed crying, feeling resentful towards her mother for not being there for her. Aliyah could not pinpoint the moment where her mom and her relationship started going downhill. Just like every eleven year old girl, Aliyah was more concerned with whether or not she could hang out with her friends or when dinner would be ready. Never once did Aliyah stop and think about others. Aliyah had an eight year old brother named Cole, and the two of them never had a problem with bickering and fighting. Aliyah and Cole constantly found something to argue about, giving their parents a run for their money. Aliyah and Cole’s dad, Gary started working in Louisiana during the week and was only able to head home on the weekends to see his family. …show more content…

As she storms out to go check the mail she makes a point to slam the door, when Aliyah walked back in she threw the mail on the counter screaming “I GOT IT!” At this moment she realizes a stray envelope on the ground and picks it up, she noticed that it was addressed to Ashley Allen and observed that it was sent from St. David’s Hospital. Aliyah bursts through her mom’s bathroom door and catches her mom crying. Aliyah sat down by her mom and waited for a response. Through the tears and sniffling, Ashley explains to Aliyah the reasons why she has been so inattentive in their lives. Ashley was suffering from cervical cancer and was going in to get treated every other day, when Aliyah asked her mom why she didn’t tell her she was heartbroken by the answer. Her mom had been hiding her sickness from Aliyah and Cole because she did not want them to worry about what could happen. She wanted her kids to be able to enjoy their childhood and not have to worry about adult things. As tears poured into Aliyah’s eyes, Aliyah felt awful about all of the times she failed to be there for her mother. Continuously asking herself, “Why could I never stop and realize something was terribly

I’m a 17 year old Muslim student who lives in Southeast Texas. My father is from the Middle East, and my mother is from Western Europe. My parents migrated as refugees from Croatia to Houston in 1995 due to the ongoing war in Yugoslavia. After they’ve migrated they’ve lived in peace here ever since. Not the kind of overwhelming that makes you feel anxious or stressed or fearful, although those emotions are not abnormal here. Being Jewish in a non-Jewish world can be a struggle, especially for a teenager. There are times when you have to make choices between celebrating what makes you unique and special and trying to fit in with everyone else. To some, it might be easier to just be like everyone else, to conform, and to ignore their Jewish identity and the Jewish values that go along with living and being Torah, but is this right? It is important to me to embrace what it means to be a Jew in today’s world and to be comfortable representing this amongst people who are different from myself. If the Jewish message is that everyone is…

El Al received an anonymous call that a bomb was in the galley of the plane. To my relief, the call was a hoax. I did not actually know this occurred until my aunt told me two days later. Nonetheless, this experience was dangerously exciting, but also an interesting way to start my life-changing trip to Israel where I traveled around the historical region, experienced different cultures, and volunteered at an archeological excavation.…
