Narrative Essay: The Car Accident This is a personal narrative I wrote for my English 101 class.
Learning something new can be a very scary experience. Of course I think I can discover and have discovered something original from every incident in my life, but sometimes I wish there had been easier ways to gain those insights. Sometime in June of the year 2001, when I arrived to the United States from Brazil, my parents and I were welcomed at the airport by this very nice lady whose name was Romy. My dad would be taking Romy's job in a few weeks, and I assume it was her duty to show us around the new town and to get us acquainted with living in Maryland. She took us shopping for basic necessities and soon after that, since we would soon need to move around on our own, we went hunting for a car. We went to several car dealerships and finally ended up in Chambersburg. We were about to move on to another place when it started to drizzle. We got inside the vehicle, made a left at the exit of the automobile dealership, and as soon as we were back on the road, a couple of feet ahead the light turned red. Initially I though Romy would have plenty of time to stop. However, she was not able to and ended up hitting one of the cars that had already come to a halt at the signal. The accident, despite being awful, was meaningful to me because I learned some driving techniques, I learned about the importance of wearing a seat belt, and I learned that I am not supposed to step out of my car whenever an accident happens.

The accident was meaningful because I learned some driving techniques. Romy, the driver, was talking on the cell phone, and wasn't very focused on the road. She was also driving faster then she should have been for certain weather conditions, because the drizzle was now a pour. She did not realize how close we were to the other cars, and attempted to stop the van when it was already too close. The car started to hydroplane and I recall hearing Romy frantically yell to my dad: Mario, Mario, the car won't stop! My dad advised her to take her foot of the brakes and then to step on it more gently, but because of all the panic going on, she pushed the pedal brake with all her might. At the time, I was only 15 years old, and I still did not have my driving license. After I acquired my license, I recall almost loosing control of my car once, but I remembered my dad's advice to Romy and was able to prevent an accident. From the accident I have also learned to avoid other distractions, such as talking on the cell phone while driving.

This accident was also meaningful because I learned about the importance of wearing a seat belt. My mom and I were in the back seat, and we had already become very frightened when the car started sliding. We were hoping Romy would be able to control the car and free us of a terrible accident. When I finally realized that our van was going to hit the car in front of us, I remember fiercely holding on to the seat, so the impact of the hit wouldn't be too great. Thankfully, all of us were wearing seat belts and all we had was a couple bruises. With that experience, I have learned how important it is to wear a seat belt regardless the circumstances.

Finally, this accident was meaningful because I learned that I am not supposed to step out of my car whenever an accident happens. As soon as we hit, the driver's air bag opened, and smoke started coming out of somewhere. Being very naive at that time, I didn't realize the smoke was simply coming from the air bag, and started shouting the car was getting on fire. My mom was the closest to the passenger door, but apparently she was a little bit more shook up than I was, so I attempted to climb over her and open the door. That's when I became even more hysterical, because I realized the door wouldn't open. I had a very sudden urge to leave the car, and could not stay in there for one more second. I made sure every one in our car was okay, and after insisting a little with my father, pursued on leaving the car through the front door to check on the people inside the car we had hit. I was happy to be outside, and did not care getting completely wet. I made my way to the other vehicle and with all the good intentions, asked the lady on the driver's seat if everybody was all right. To my amazement, the man who was sitting beside her hurriedly opened the door and came to my direction. He said the most cruel and offensive words I ever heard in my life and after feeling completely cursed out, I started sobbing like an idiot, turned around, and quickly began my way back to my family. The heartless man insisted on saying horrible things as he followed me to the automobile. I was very relieved when I got there and my dad told him to shut up,and was even happier when he made his way back to his car like a scared puppy. In Brazil, it is customary to go over to the other vehicles involved in the accident to make sure everyone is not hurt. After this experience, I have learned from my dad and some friends that here in the United States I shouldn't step out of my automobile to check on the others involved in the accident. I also learned that this is part of American traffic laws.

In conclusion, the accident, despite being awful, was very meaningful to me because I learned some driving techniques, such as focusing on the road and not stepping on the brake firmly when sliding in the rain. I also learned about the importance of wearing a seat belt, and that it helps prevent a person from getting injured once involved in a car accident. Finally, I learned that I am not supposed to step out of my car whenever an accident happens because this is part of American traffic laws.

Life is comprised of a series of learning profound learning experiences. On that stands out occurred last year in seventh grade. Two friends and I decided we wanted to try something new, to learn how to play basketball! We made that decision mainly because we wanted to do an activity together for the winter term, and seventh graders didn't have the option of doing the winter school play. We were very hesitant; only one of us had any experience playing basketball, and we didn't think it would be very fun to run up and down a court trying to get a ball in a hoop. Still we kept an open mind and began to learn how to play.…

The relationship between fiction and nonfiction is very elaborate. The book, The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle deals with a family experiencing accidents each year in October and now they want to figure out why. In the book, Cara and her ex-step-brother accidentally fall in love. This tends to happen more often than we think in the world we live in. Fiction is a story that is created from your imagination but can also be inspired by true events. Nonfiction is a true story about real people and real events. But fiction reading is able to influence our ideas about real life.…

The narrative, The Driver’s Seat struck home for me because I just received my driver’s license this past May, 2015. I took time for me to actually drive and to become comfortable behind the wheel of a car. This piece of writing spoke to me and allowed me to review some of the identical thinking points that I went through while getting to the point of taking control of my dad’s car. The story effectively walked me through the trials of spirit and mental anguish that preceded me in taking hold of the vehicle with my dad as the co-pilot giving directions. This was the exact thing the driving instructor in The Driver’s Seat‘ taught the author. The routine of how to maneuver and throw caution to the wind- taking risks- to get the author over…

Friday, October 24th was the day I almost died. I got in a life-threatening car accident. My seatbelt saved my life. If I didn’t have my seatbelt on when I wrecked I would be dead even with medical attention. I swerved to prevent a wreck between the black suv, the other car involved in the accident at fault, and myself by swerving. Swerving may not have been the best idea because I lost control of the car and ended up, upside down in a ditch with a completely missing window, a caved in roof that would have collapsed on my head if I was a tiny bit taller, a cracked all over windshield, a demolished side mirror barley attached to the car, a lot of dents, out of place tires, bits of glass inside the car, and broken inside mirrors.…

It was a nice, sunny day. Windows down and the stereo up. Going down the highway at about 75 in the middle of the day! All was well until she looked into her rearview mirror; the blue lights were high on her trail. She pulled over, the officers came to her window, is there a problem sir? Ma’am you were speeding he says. Oh I didn’t realize I was the woman said. The officer asked her for her license and she replied, I would give it to you but I don’t have it. Why don’t you have it, he asked? Well, she says, I lost it 4 times for drunk driving. He then wanted to see her registration but she didn’t have that either. She says, ya see officer I stole this car and I killed and hacked up the owner. His body parts are in a plastic bag in the trunk…

My first accident was in the head. It all had happened when I first got to Texas from Ecuador. I was feeling a little thing in the top of my head and I started to touch it and getting curious about it as the days went by. So, I decided to tell my mom about this little thing in my head. When my mom first found out about what I had in my head she was nervous and we went to some doctor to ask about what was happening to me. Then, the doctor checked my head and he said it was a tumor. First, I didn’t think it was true, but when he…

I felt this sense of fear, but I knew it was just nervousness. It caused my whole body to tremble. I creeped onto the field and pass by the fifty girls and all of the coaches. Just me walking by everyone gave me this ginormous knot in my stomach, it made me feel like I was going to pass out right on the field. I was breathing heavy, like I just ran a marathon. I was beyond nervous just to be the new girl on the field. I was scared of what the girls thought of me, and how the coaches thought I would play and adapt to the sport. I had never even picked up a lacrosse stick and the girls were passing, catching and shooting on goal: how does a new player get to there if they were two week late into the season? I was terrified I would never get to the level of the rest of the team.…

One the tow truck finally came and took CoCo, my friend picked my sister and I up from the accident scene and drove us to the hospital. We sat in the waiting room for more than an hour in severe pain, just praying we would be next every time a nurse would come out prepared to call a name. Once we were finally called we were escorted to different hallways due to them not having even one room available. We were in so much pain and only given a cot to wait to be seen by a doctor. After forty-five minutes a doctor finally came, checked me and questioned me resulting in me being sent for x-rays and CAT scans. The results came back and turns out my neck, shoulder, wrist, and back were sprained. The drive back to school at four in the morning was so dreadful with the road being under construction and bumps all down the road. It took almost two months for me to fully recover, which to me was eternity. A few days after the accident, I returned home from school. Being back in Orlando it was time for me to begin working for the summer and realized it was going to be exasperating until I replaced my totaled car. The insurance company gave me back a good amount for a down payment on a new car. But, now it was time to research cars based on miles, color, year, and most definitely an affordable price. I became Déja the car guru with all the research I did on vehicles. Finally a month and half after my accident I found the…

Two months after I get my driver’s license, I get my very first speeding ticket. What a great way to start out driving, right? Well my parents didn’t think so. So, I’m driving home from school on this I guess you could call it a “hilly” road where the bumps are fun to ride over when speeding. It was all fun and games until I spot the cop parked at the end of the street just watching me. There was no use in slowing down. I knew he’d already clocked me at 50 in a 25. There wasn’t anyone on the road besides me, but in the passenger seat sat my best friend. I was also driving through a neighborhood. I put a lot of people in danger. I know the whole situation could have been retained if I had followed the law.…
