The clouds hang heavily in the sombre skies. Shadows of the barren trees fall upon the blanket of crisp, drifting, white snow that covers every inch of the frozen ground. icicles cling to the eves, sparkling in the silver rays of light that shine through the clouds. Everything is shrouded in mist and silence. There’s no sound, save for the occasional bird’s chirp or trill.
I feel the wind gnawing at my cheeks and tug the fraying end of my chunky knit scarf.
Snowflakes settle on the black wool of the heavy coat, where the rest for a moment, before melting into nothingness.

The light from the sun fell upon the boy, making him seem almost angelic.
I allow him to pull me to my feet. His hands are soft and warm.
We bound through the fields, grinning from ear to ear, not bothering to look back.
The fields stretch on endlessly.
It’s a wonder we haven’t grown weary yet.
Soon the fields were soaked in moonlight.
Miah glanced towards me; I glance back, expecting to see his wide, glowing grin. But he’s no longer smiling. His blue-grey eyes are wide with fear.
“We have to get out of here...Now…”
“Miah?”
“GO!”
I hesitate, and I realise now, there is nothing beneath my feet. We’re falling down, into places we cannot name. We cannot see anymore, for the light has been drained. We cannot feel, or hear, or breathe.
I feel his fingertips brush against my own. Though are they really his own? They’re so...cold.
A pair of glowing eyes suddenly pierces the unbroken darkness.
Everything stops.
“Hello…” a voice whispers to us. I can hear Miah’s heart pounding against his chest. His breathing is heavy, almost coming in long, painful sounding wheezes.
“Miah…”
“Shh.”
He reaches towards me with a trembling clammy hand.
“Do you remember what I told you about this?”
