It felt strange walking into the Senate house that day, like there was something in the air. I couldn't tell if it was a good something or a bad something, it was just different. Well, I guess today was going to be a different day as well. Today could be a game changer here in Rome. It wasn't just a normal Senate meeting, it was a meeting that could change the city for good. For good or for bad, I’d yet to find out until everything is said and done.
I remember coming in the Senate House for the first meeting only a few months prior to now. I had just been appointed to serve on the Senate. That day there was a nervous energy in the air when I walked into room that day. Some friends had welcomed me that day with many handshakes …show more content…
and hugs, almost congratulating me for getting into an elite club. Which I guess I did in a way, being in the senate is for the creme of the crop, topnotch men in Rome. I wonder how the people will react to all of these noblemen committing one of the most unforgivable crimes in Rome, treason.
The room started to grow quiet as some of the last people trickled one after another. We were all anxiously awaiting the arrival of the man of the hour, Julius Caesar. Caesar was very kind to the people of Rome, matter of fact they loved him because of his giving nature towards civilians. His gaining the love and affection of the people was giving him more power and success, which was not good for us senators. He was already dictator, what is did he want to take from us? Especially for the leading senators, Cassius and Casca, for they longed for the power they were never going to get because of Caesar’s rule. One of the most surprising men to long for Caesar’s power, was Caesar’s mentee Brutus. Not only was his mentor Caesar, they were also the best of friends, as they would talk to each other all the time. That’s what was most surprising about today, that dictator’s best friend, would give the okay and wants to personally murder the dictator of Rome, Julius Caesar.
Before today, the some of the senators had talked among themselves about how the best way to kill a loved public figure was. Poison and suffocation were some of the top picks of the men, but the one we saw best fit was stabbing him in the Senate house. Casca felt that everyone should be all in this together, so the house was the best place for us to meet. We were instructed to hide daggers in our togas to shield the details of our plan. All we were waiting for now was our target to walk through those doors for the final time.
As soon as he did, we stood to recognize his presence immediately, just like normal.
The air felt tense and anxious. I started to get nervous, I felt myself shift in my seat. “Calm yourself young one,” said the senator to my right, “it will all be right in the end.” “We can only hope, my friend” I said with a slight smile. Caesar talked for a short while before the main conspirators, minus Brutus, started to slowly approach the stand, very nonchalantly. I could see Casca twiddling the knife next to his side, waiting to strike. Then everything started to move in slow-motion. Casca says something, pulls out his knife and stabs Caesar, setting of some sort of domino effect. One after one, every senator would take a jab from every angle, front, side, and back were all targets for a knife. I came behind him and struck him in between the shoulder blades. I took my knife out and moved out of the line, almost as if this was a sort of game. I stood back and watched as the final person came up to finish the job, it was none other than Brutus. Caesar said one final quiet phrase to Brutus, and then he was finally dead. Julius Caesar of Rome had been killed by his own men, in his own realm, and by his best friend. The air then felt heavy and thick, as the smell of murder lingered for many minutes after
that.
