for us court members to get into position, and we began to enter the elegantly decorated ballroom through tall, sophisticated doors. I took my seat at the court’s table, when a servant stepped forth and announced for us to rise for our new king and queen.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth strode into the ballroom and began to walk around and mingle with their guests.
However, they both looked slightly off. They were dressed to the nines in expensive garments, though they both looked mentally preoccupied. Perhaps it’s just all the fuss about the coronation, I thought to myself, Nothing to read too much into, they both just have a lot on their minds. I grew anxious to talk to and congratulate my old friend when I saw a man walk into the room and weave through the guests towards Macbeth. Macbeth nodded to the guests he had been speaking too then went to the corner of the room with the strange man and appeared to grow very concerned with what the newcomer was telling him. After a few moments, the man left and Macbeth’s demeanor grew ever more worrisome. Due to the congestion of the room, I was unable to reach Macbeth before we were signalled to take our seats for the first course. AS the guests, members of the court, and I sat down, I noticed Macbeth wasn’t seated yet, but instead staring at his throne with an expression of disbelief and horror. I heard him whisper sternly in the direction of his chair, “What are you doing here..? This is not possible...I settled this.” I turned my gaze to the other court members at my table and shared a confused look with the few who heard what I had. The guests were still murmuring and had not noticed. Lady Macbeth, now seated, took attention to Macbeth and said calmly, “Darling, take your seat, dinner …show more content…
will start soon.” Macbeth seemed to take no notice in his wife and still glared at the chair.
“How is this possible?!” Macbeth said, even louder this time.
The guests seemed to take become aware now and turned to their new king. Macbeth then bellowed, “You should not be here!” He took two apprehensive steps back, still with his gaze locked on the chair. Some of the court members and I grew anxious and looked towards Lady Macbeth for an explanation. Lady Macbeth glanced around the room at all eyes on her and her husband, and stated calmly, “It’s nothing to be concerned about, do not worry. This happens on occasion. He gets these visions sometimes, ignore his behavior. Excuse me.” She grabbed Macbeth’s arm and lead him out into the next room
over.
The room began to hum with the sounds of guests whispering to each other about the event that just took place. That was certainly strange, I thought. I wonder if that had anything to do with what the strange man earlier mentioned to him? I turned towards the door that they had left out of, and it was slightly ajar so I could just barely see Lady Macbeth talking to Macbeth. Judging by their body language, it appeared as though Lady Macbeth was attempting to console him, then she seemed to look almost frustrated. She composed herself and then began leading her husband back into the ballroom, they were then followed by a fleet of waiters carrying trays of appetizers. As they passed me, I overheard Lady Macbeth coo too Macbeth, “Just ignore what you see, it’s just your imagination. Relax and enjoy the dinner.” To which Macbeth mumbled, “I’ll try, but his face...the blood…” Blood? I wondered. Lady Macbeth took her seat as Macbeth trudged slowly towards the chair he had previously been yelling at. The other guests seemed to not notice that Macbeth still had not taken his seat yet, due to being distracted by the incoming food.
The clattering of dishes was soon taken to a sudden halt when Macbeth shouted again. “I did what I had to do, you know that! You would have done the same had you been told what I had been told!” All other noise in the ballroom ceased and attention was once again drawn to Macbeth. Lady Macbeth quickly rose from her seat and rushed to once again grab Macbeth’s arm. Though this time, she didn’t lead him out. She turned to the puzzled crowd. “I sincerely apologize for this. But unfortunately it seems that my husband is not well enough to proceed with this dinner tonight. Our servants will see you all out. Once again, I am deeply sorry.” The guests looked around confused and uneasily began to rise from their seats and started walking out, whispering to each other. The other court members and I arose just as perplexed and followed the other guests. As we passed through the grand doors, I turned back for one last look at Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth had stopped holding Macbeth’s arm and had her hands raised to her temples, while Macbeth stood to the side with a thousand-yard stare. That was the last glimpse I got of them before the guards closed the ballroom doors.
