Narrative Essay: The Vietnam War
“No!” I said, “You and Ann be the Red Coats and Gale and I will be the Americans!”

Ellen responded, “Rose, I already told you, you and Gale were the Americans last time!”

“Fine,” I said disapprovingly.

The war had been going on for at least a year now and we had only won once, the battle at Trenton and Princeton. But that was nine months ago. I didn’t believe in the war, but Ellen sure did! In fact, she wanted to join! And when she told us, we went nuts.

“I’m going to join the war,” she said in a overly serious voice.

“Pffft! That’s really funny! Do you want to go get some lunch?”

“No, no, no, Rose I’m serious. I’m going to cut my hair and join General George in the fight against Great Britain.”

“No!” Ann practically screamed,

My goodness Ellen! UGGGH! So, I got Ann and Gale and went to the field behind my house.

“No!” exclaimed Ann.

“What are we going to do?!!?”

In response, I wrote aunt Betsy a letter explaining that Ellen was our friend and that Betsy needed to explain to General Washington that Ellen really just wanted to help. That even though she’s a girl, she should be allowed to help!

A few days later, I got a response!

My dear Rose-

Before you had sent your letter, a couple other women and I begged General George to set her free because, really, she wanted to help! Thankfully, he is letting her go! He agrees that she wanted to help and is sending her home! Word is that she will be home within two weeks!

Sincerely, Betsy Ross

As Betsy said, she was here in exactly two weeks. And you better believe that we were glad to see her.

“Oh my gosh!” I exclaimed in the midst of hugging Ellen to death, “Are we glad to see you!”

We all sat down in the tall grasses of the field behind my house and shared stories of while she was

The first way that Ellen changed is confidence. Before Ellen had to deliver grandfather’s message, Ellen had a lack of confidence. At first Ellen refused to work until a lady told Ellen "When I gets to the end of mines I'll catch you up to the rest of us" (63). This was the first reasonable thing Ellen had heard, so she began chopping her row. The woman's name was Mavis, she would help cool off Ellen, and help her catch her up with her rows. Ellen and Mavis began to have a strong relationship, and Ellen learned all types of things from her. Ellen began to spy on Mavis' family "It looked like slavery times with them all hanging out on the porch picking at each other. They fought at strong as they played and laughed" (66). Ellen learned a lot about race and how black life is because of what Mavis taught…

When she has no choice but to stay with her aunt by law, she learns that “blood ties do not necessarily nurture” (Makowsky 158). For example, when staying with her aunt Nadine, Ellen gets into an argument with her cousin on Christmas day and says something rude to her, “I told Dora….. If she ever had the sense to take a smart class she might know what I was talking about” (Gibbons 131). Her aunt Nadine walks into the argument and heard Ellen say this, without questioning what happened “She said for me to get out… that she didn’t want me to begin with” (Gibbons 131), and kicks her out on the streets. Being abandoned on Christmas day is not the only abuse Ellen goes through, she is also left with the responsibilities of an adult at the age of eleven. In the novel, Ellen is taken in her grandmother who hates her, and leaves her with huge responsibilities that no child should be left with. For example, Ellen’s grandmother gets very sick and Ellen has no choice but to take care of…

I am a “boot” adjusting to my new life in kilo company, and corporal has recently returned from a nasty deployment in iraq. He says that he is my father and that he knows what’s best. he kicks sand at me while i am timed to see how fast i can pick up all the yellow cigarette butts he dumped on the floor to “fix” my attention to detail and remind me of my ignorance, as he yells, “you are going to war soon, and I won’t be there to babysit you!” During the deployment workups in the states, we spent weeks patrolling, looking for something that we knew wasn’t real. Digging into defensive positions and waiting the night out for an enemy we knew would never come. Spending rainy nights in muddy holes, fearing what our leaders might do to us if we fell asleep. Firing machine guns, shooting rifles and launching grenades at little green targets…. All of it was just training ops.…

First off, trip to Vietnam was truly a blessing. I did not expect so much of the trip until the first day I arrived Vietnam. On my first day, I got an opportunity to meet many great people who were selfless; those who cared more about others rather than themselves. It took approximately 14hours in total to arrive at hotel. Even though the plane ride was only about 5hours, since it was a group trip, it took extra time to ensure everyone is in right place. Despite the exhaustion and drowsiness, no one complained but encouraged others. I was already touched by grace of God before we even began our mission trip. On the second day, I volunteered for the medical service. There were two activities including the medical service, and house painting…

When you are someone’s support system you take on multiple roles that indirectly deteriorate your self preservation. Being a listener or a shoulder to cry on, requires sacrifices that, in the moment, you do not even recognize as imposing. Voluntarily and willingly being there for someone begins with the unwavering doubt that you and your own problems cannot and will not prevail over your person’s immediate crisis. Depending on the duration of your duty, a somewhat selfish thought of inconvenience is bound to surface. But, that wave of retraction is almost always combatted by a riptide of dedication and loyalty that brings you back to sea, where all you can do is tread. In turn, the suppression of self regarding issues regularly comes with a layer of obligation and a sting of bitterness.…

I have been living in the war zone a fighting for it feels like ages. But I feel as if we as a colony, we may pull away from Britain and win this war. After our two losses we banded together won at the battle of the turning point. The Battle of Saratoga. Tide tide has turned and we Americans are riding it to victory. The battle was won by the Continental Army, on October 17, 1777, and it was amazing. After Burgoyne’s surrender, we gained hope and we believed we may win. Us colonists also gained the alliance of the French. And we all needed it, they sent money, food, coats and shoes, weapons, and troops. This is why the we the Continental Army gained hope, but we also had confidence. And that confidence, we all believe, will bring us to an overall victory of The…
