A game-changing artist and an impervious celebrity, Lil Wayne began as his career as a near-novelty — a preteen delivering hardcore hip-hop — but through years of maturation and reinventing the mixtape game, he developed into a million-selling rapper with a massive body of work, one so inventive and cunning that it makes his famous claim of being the “best rapper alive” worth considering. Born Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. and raised in the infamous New Orleans neighborhood of Hollygrove, he was a straight-A student but never felt his true intelligence was expressed through any kind of report card. He found music was the best way to express himself, and after taking the name Gangsta D he began writing rhymes. Combining a strong work ethic with aggressive…
All types of research are based on assumptions of how others see the world and how they can best come to comprehend that perception. This being said, social inquiry may be based on the everyday assumptions that the world makes when researching all things. While there is that similarity, there are many differences…
Tupac had sold over 75 million records worldwide as of 2010, making him one of the best selling music artists in the world. Rolling Stone Magazine named him the 86th Greatest Artist of All Time. Tupac was different from Biggie with music because of how he talked about racism, social problems, and hardship in inner cities violence. Before he became a well know rap artist he was roadie, backup dancer, and MC for the hip-hop group Digital Underground. Another difference was Tupac’s music career really began once he made his first solo album “2Pacalypse now” after that album and many more he then came out with his own rap group called “Thug Life”. Once the group released their only album “Thug Life: Volume 1” Tupac later got introduce to Suge Knight, who then played a big role into Tupac music…
“Rappers – I monkey flip them with the funky rhythm I be kickin’. Musician – inflict the composition” are the first words heard off of one of the most influential hip hop albums of all time. Nas’ debut album Illmatic is considered to be one of hip hops foundational documents and has earned itself a large number of awards, recognitions and record breakers. However, Illmatic was only the start of the icon known as Nas. Nas would go on to selling 7 U.S. platinum records, being featured numerous singles and becoming a household name for fans of hip hop. Nas is known for his intellectual rhyme flow, while being an outsider who rhymes about many things he has witnessed (Sewer 3). Besides being an iconic rap artist, Nas…
Ever wondered what would people do if they had all the money in the world? Would they spend it on themselves? How about their household, allies, or neighbors? If they could spend on them, would they spend money to those in need? For those who aren’t as prosperous, and are bound in the hertz of a life they cannot contract out of. Unless there are people out there who are willing to consider a stand fix the subjects they’re confronting. Hip hop culture in general has nurtured a dualism within messages sent by lyrics. Nowhere was this duality more evident than the music of Tupac Shakur. As music reflected his reality and at times he’d reference women with derogatory terms, however he showed a level of responsibility with songs such as “Dear Mama” and “Brenda’s got a baby”. The lack of respect was noticed by many. Stress and the need to make a hit increased, he became a sex symbol along with a flock of “haters” trying to kill him. The flirtation with the materialistic trappings that the RAP game has to offer. “Forced laughter”(Shock-G), it was that Tupac was unhappy and this was speaks through his…

His rap songs are over flowing with rhythm and rhyme. Eminem has the talent to make just about any word rhyme. He could make something rhyme with orange if he had to. Without his strong rhythm skills, his music would be nothing. Without his strong rhythm skills, he would have no rhymes. Without his strong rhythm skills, Eminem would not be the rapper and artist he is today. Marshall Mathers is able to scrounge up any group of words, make them rhyme and sound absolutely amazing with the help of his right brained rhythm knack. It is astonishing to look at his ability to rhyme so well, and make fantastic pieces of art. Eminem is not some ordinary rapper, rhyming words like time, dime, and slime; He is rhyming more complex words, and words you would not even imagine could go…
Being born on May 21st, 1972, Biggie was caught in the middle of racial violence, gang wars, and a lifestyle that most people can’t relate to. At the age of fifteen, Biggie was selling crack on the streets of Brooklyn, being better known for dealing drugs than making rhymes. This part in Biggie’s life greatly influenced who he became, a world renowned rapper. His career started in basements and street corners around town, freestyling to his peers and neighborhood friends. People knew biggie as the street corner thug who could spit a rap when he wanted, and about what he wanted. His talent was nothing to overlook, he started rapping with the “Gold Brothers” and the “Techniques”, who ended up introducing Biggie to his first recording studio. At the age of 17 Biggie had dropped out of school, despite showing potential. The idea of money and power was too large to give up. He spent nine months in jail for drug charges, writing and preparing for his time in the lime light. Ounce he was released, he started to put together mix tapes, which bounced from source to source, causing Biggie’s name to gain publicity. Biggie’s first solo song, “Party and Bullshit” was featured in the film Who’s the Man? Not long after Biggie started to gain fame, music producer “Puffy”, or Sean Combs started to take interest, and began to record and produce for Biggie. In 1994 Biggie released his first album, “Ready to Die”, which exploded in the rap industry. Biggie had gone from hustling drugs on the corner in 1990, to being the “top-selling rap artist” in 1995 as MTV puts it. Things were looking up for biggie, until his fellow rap artist Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive by shooting. Tupac’s followers blamed Biggie and his crew, who denied any affiliation. Seven months later, Biggie was killed in a drive by shooting. Many believe the perpetrators belonged to Tupac’s crew, or a number of…
African American hip hop culture gained popularity in the decades following the Civil Rights movement that ended in the 1960s. In today’s society, we refer to the music of the 1970s and 1980s as “old school” hip-hop. These songs are notable for the simple rapping techniques used as well as lyrics that primarily focus on party-related subjects. The song titled “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five is an example of an old school hip hop song that strayed away from the typical party-related lyrics and focused on telling a story about life in the ghetto. This song ultimately changed the content and tone of hip hop forever by accurately proving Ralph Ellison’s three-step process as part of the blues music, portraying the harsh life in the hood, and ultimately becoming one of the most successful rap songs of all time.…

many of the artists. From the beginning, in the boroughs of New York City, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, hip-hop always had an element of “dope”. An element of dope can be thought of as another way to describe something that is a “Power Move”. In many of the interviews, Ice-T juxtaposes the artist’s raps with the reactions of him and the film crew. This sets up a situation where the audience is able to see a Power Move, the artist recites their rap, and the people…
