First of all, a crisis hotline is a number that one may call when they are in need of immediate emergency telephone counseling by trained volunteers. To start, you need to assess yourself; meaning to make sure all your own problems are set aside in case you come in contact with someone who has a similar situation that you have been through but isn’t resolved. Then, the training begins. You will need to learn to react under emergency situations and under pressure. You will also learn different counseling techniques, although through the hotline you will be having the person in the crisis situation be the decision-maker. You will need to have them gain your trust and be able to open up freely to you.…
The PBS Frontline documentary “Rape in the Fields” reveals the gross atrocities of human rights violations against undocumented immigrant women throughout America’s vast farmlands. The group consists of a half-million female workers. Culturally they are from a male dominated society that migrates to the U.S. for economic opportunity. These women are underprivileged workers without access to learn English. They are unaware of American laws that protect persons from violence and crime. They are very afraid and focused on basic survival instincts. Because they are in this country illegally, they are afraid of being deported and lose their income. Fear keeps them from speaking out and uniting to make changes in their work environment.…
In the article written by Sharon Block, “Rape without Women: Print Culture and the Politicization of Rape, 1765-1815.” The author is explaining the way rape was dealt with in the eighteenth century. She also goes on to add that rape was hidden from the public because of its graphic details. Rape was viewed as having national and social boundaries that the public should not see, yet there were broadcasts and newspapers published about rape cases that a court system would not process. The women would step up to testify for being raped but the justice system thought they were lying. In that time period, women did not have as many rights as men did. There rapes reoccurred because men knew they could get away with it. The mass production of propaganda…
Rape Culture is a culture in which multi-media (radio, television, movies, music, social sites); news stations, politicians, public and social institutions, religious groups, and the general masses condone sexual assault by normalizing or trivializing male sexual violence and by blaming survivors for their own abuse.…
The legislation addressing Rape Survivor Child Custody Act is of paramount interest to me because I am a woman and unfortunately in the future this bill could apply to me or someone I love. This issue directly impacts me and any other woman in the United States.…
In 2003, the Bush Administration signed the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA, P.L. 108-79), the purpose of which is to address the increasing problem of sexual abuse within U.S. correctional facilities. The Act is applicable to all public and private institutions as well as community-based agencies housing adults or juveniles. In accordance with PREA protections, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has recently released national standards; under this Act, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is expected to conduct a comprehensive annual assessment and statistical review of the incidence and effects of prison rape (DOJ, 2012).…
Psychodynamic counselling has a long history and vast literature to condense so only a brief overview is possible here – following on from the themes already discussed and with particular focus on four psychologists: Freud, Jung, Adler and Klein.…
In 2003 the United States Congress crafted a wide-ranging legislative response to prison rape. The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 also known as PREA was passed unanimously by the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Prison Rape Elimination Act established a "zero-tolerance standard" for prison rape and mandated that the U.S. Department of Justice "make the prevention of prison rape a top priority in each prison system.” One of the main goals of PREA is to increase the data and information on the incidence of prison rape to help improve management and administration in regard to sexual violence in correctional facilities. The law also created an independent National Prison Rape Elimination Commission, which was charged with studying…

This article provides further evidence that victim of the rape trial is judged on more than just if she was assaulted or not in that one instance. Disgustingly enough, when a sexual assault victim is put through a trial, it is their past that is being judged. Their sexual history, their wardrobe, and their overall personality is being tested for likability, with the whole process starting from the police deciding that the assault is “legitimate.” Despite having assaulted someone, the offender might be declared innocent because the jury did not find the behavior of the victim appropriate. This…
The Rape Crisis Center was founded in 1975 to provide comprehensive services to sexual assault victims and their families. The center wanted to assure that these victims have the information, resources, services, and most importantly the people to help them get through this troublesome time. Many people deal with rape differently. Some common survivor reactions are depression, flashbacks, fear, avoidance, and more commonly guilt. Not everyone reacts in the same way, so there is no right or wrong way to feel afterwards. The Rape Crisis Center can help a victim through this time, and provide them with the resources to learn to help themselves. The Center is a non-profit organization funded by federal, state and local agencies, as well as from individuals and community businesses.…
“I have entered high school with the wrong hair, the wrong clothes, the wrong attitude. And I don't have anyone to sit with. I am Outcast” (Anderson 4). In the novel Speak, the main character is raped at a party; this action continues today even though the book was written almost two decades ago. Rape victims have a higher chance of having post traumatic stress disorder in their lifetime than any other type of victim (Kilpatrick). Most rape victims suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, which can cause life long inner pain, even though some show varying degrees of symptoms. Rape victims are tormented from their own experiences, but survivors all have the same indicators from their actions.…
Rape can be an upsetting, complicated and even taboo topic, but it is a heinous crime that should never be ignored. Rape is a hard subject to talk about, and it’s even more difficult when it happens within the prison system. It’s easy to say that prisoners deserve to pay for their crimes, but prison rape goes beyond punishment and forces many people to question what rights human beings deserve. Prison rape perpetuates a detrimental and dangerous cycle that affects both its victims and the general public when the criminals are released.…
